Separately, I'm now thinking of moving my room around so that I've got a desk in front of my TV which I'll then use as a 4K OLED monitor. It's 55 inches, which is obviously quite big for a monitor, but I'll have it wall-mounted with a deep desk in between that will also be offset from the wall slightly, and when I'm gaming on it I'll sit back in my chair and put my feet up on a foot stool, so I reckon I'll be at least 120cm from it at all times, closer to 200 when gaming, which is (apparently) the optimal distance for 4k on this size of screen anyway.

Has anyone else got something similar setup? Does being so close to a comparatively big screen give you a headache? I still want to use the TV as a monitor for regular browsing and so on, but I don't work from home or anything and the majority of my PC use (I envision) will be for gaming anyway.

At the moment I'm having to Windows+P to extend the screen each time I wasn't to play PC games on my TV, which is a minor faff, and I can't run a 4K 120hz-cable HDMI cable around the room, so I'm missing out on that, too.

If I did this, I could sell my monitor and free up some space in my room.

Hmm.

The more I read your posts, the more I think you really need to buy a 4090...

Thanks, both.

I was playing RDR2 last night with DLSS set to auto mode and it seemed to work fine - I was getting a consistent 60fps with the resolution set to 4K. There is some dithering/ghosting around the characters which is quite noticeable at times, but apparently this is due to an anti-aliasing setting that I need to turn off, so I'll try that later

What's been more irritating so far is that I can't save in RDR2 mid-mission and had to restart, losing some progress. I tried just pausing the game and putting my PC into sleep mode last night, but when I came back to it this morning for a quick go before work, the picture was completely static and I had to restart the game. Apparently, playing in borderless windowed mode helps with this, as well as alt-tabbing out of the game before suspending the PC.

I think that quickly picking up where you left off is something that console gaming definitely excels at compared with PC.

RDR2 unfortunately doesn't have the best DLSS implementation. DLSS is basically magic in the majority of cases but devs or certain engines bungle it up in some rare cases. MW2 2022 also has some pretty meh DLSS. I keep them off in both those games.

In stuff like Control, Cyberpunk, Death Stranding and pretty much most of other games its 100 percent free perf with little to no visual impact but in RDR2 its a bit eh

Pfft I upgraded from 48 to 55 as the 48 felt too small :eyebrows:

Yeah, the ghosting in RDRII is mostly cause of the DLSS I think.

There can be funky stuff sometimes even in the games with good implementations, but generally the ones like Control and Cyberpunk do a good job and the higher the rendering resolution (which DLSS builds from) the more stable the output

I'll have to try this frame generation craic at some point. It was the one part of Nvidia's brief I wasn't totally convinced by, afaik the only game I have that supports it is Witcher 3 but that game seems to have some problems since its update.

I played through all of a plague tale requiem with DLSS3 on and it felt flawless. I'm sure we'll implemented it will be great in most titles where its not an esports game (which run on toasters anyway)

Really? Do you have that on your desk, then, of have you got a set up similar to what I'm describing, where it's on the wall, then your desk is in front of the TV, then you sit in your chair behind your desk? Does the TV turn on when your PC turns on, like a HDMI-CEC-enabled device?

Hmm. I might turn it off, then, and run it at 1440p native. If I'm being honest, I can't notice that much of a difference, anyway.

I posted in here that whilst running The Witcher 3 at topper most settings at 4K 120 I was getting crashes. I thought I'd fixed it with an OC to my 4090 (lol). I hadn't.

Of course it was nothing to do with needing more power out of the card, but the fact that the GOG overlay is borked with DLSS3. Unticked the overlay and it hasn't crashed once in a dozen hours. My card is staying at stock, don't think there's a game yet that'll need an OC.

Doubt anyone will find the above useful but if anyone is playing TW3 with DLSS3 via GOG, turn off the GOG overlay as it's broken.

amc, I had the same problem testing Witcher earlier. Constant crashing while changing settings in Novigrad. I'll try that gog thing, tho I have the steam version so I'm not even sure if there is a gog overlay

I have 4 fecking plugs in this thing, I better not need more power than that lol. More likely to look into undervolting than attempt to guzzle more power.

Yeah, 4 cables (600W) into mine too. TBH I normally turn any intrusive launcher shit off straight away but don't really use GOG. Added bonus after disabling it is now not having nonsense achievements etc popping up.

A question on this actually, my PSU has three pci-e sockets for VGA but each cable can be daisy chained. So I have 3 separate cables connected currently and the fourth is daisy chained from cable 3.

Sound safe or similar to yourself? From what I hear you don't even necessarily need to have all 4 plugged in, having 3 gives you 450W or something.

edit I might have the answer to my question actually. This is the 12vmnpphljl thingy adapter that you can get for these cards, it actually only requires two plugs into the back it seems to get full 600W. tho this doesn't necessarily indicate what the standard cables are rated for

I have four separate leads myself. I do know that daisy chaining is a no-no for the 4090 but seeing as you have three already and only one being chained I'd imagine you'll be fine, that'll give 450w+. Two daisy chained cables would be a no. You can simply plug three in only, anyway. It'll only attempt to draw over 450w if you give it a big OC.

From what I've read only the big dicks who hover around the top of the 3DMark charts will be using anything like the power needed for 600w that four separate cables provides.

You'll be fine.

I think for peace of mind I'll stick with 3 (no daisy chain), I might buy that adapter I linked if I can find out for sure it's definitely compatible with my specific PSU. Cyberpunk did not draw anywhere close to 450 anyway so I don't think I'll feel underserved

Yeah, these factory OC cards come with cabling for 600w but I highly doubt the small OC they come with will use anything above 450w. If you then add your own decent OC to it then perhaps, but even then I think it's only the extreme over-clockers who'll really need four.

We made it, windows 10 installed and everything’s running properly. 42 C2 doesn’t feel anything like as ridiculous as I thought it might. Maybe because it goes down to desk level it’s not some towering beast.

Nah on a extra large dining table being used as a desk with a 90cm depth. This is the 48C1 on the depth. I tend to like bigger screens so a 55 was perfectly acceptable so I gave my 48 to my wife as her work monitor lol. I have pic somewhere but essentially we have the 55 and 48 on the same desk side by side as its a dedicated office/gaming room

My 4090-based PC arrives in one hour :omg:

I probably should have checked this a long time ago but is there any sort of setup or BIOS tweaking I should do to get the most out of it?

£1008 from richer sounds with a 6 year guarantee.

Bought it through the company so will get the VAT back, £840.79

Was a bit concerned initially but figured out how to turn off the ECO settings to unlock the proper brightness and now in Filmmaker mode it’s impeccable.

I got one built by PC Specialist after some very helpful advice from everyone in the PC building advice thread.

It's got an i7 13700k, Asus ROG Strix z970-F Gaming motherboard, 32GB Dominator 6000mhz DDR5 and 2x2TB Samsung 980 Pros. And an alarming amount of RGBs in the case and cooler which I hadn't realised until I'd paid for it 😅
