It's an AS Rock B450M, I believe.

They have a bunch using that model name, some support that CPU and some do not. Also, a number have a BIOS update that says it will increase compatibility with Nvidia 40 series GPU's.

Thanks. It's the Pro4, the first one on the list. I will look into it. Will my mobo not necessarily work with the 4070ti straight out the box, then?

Good news!

I'm sure the card will work fine without the update, it does just say improve compatibility rather than enable it.

Thanks to all the kind and informative folks in this thread for enabling my expensive gaming habits 😄

It’s for your own good, really it is.

Do you PC bros with these fancy GPUs also have Xbox Series consoles and/or PS5s? I was tempted to sell my PS5 anyway, as it's not getting played, but now I'm having treacherous thoughts about maybe giving up my XSX as well and going full PC gamer (plus Switch).

Xbox is pointless due to gamepass on pc

PS5 for exclusives but thats becoming less of an issue with games being ported over

Yeah, that was my thinking. I justified getting both consoles originally after building my PC a couple of years ago because my wife occasionally used it, but she hardly ever does nowadays. The convenience of console gaming is definitely a big boon, especially with quick resume, but I don't know if it's a boon that's worth the £700-800 I could get from flogging both consoles.

I'll see how it goes, I think.

Steam deck and Nvidia shield TV with 4k streaming to the living room from my PC means I have no need for consoles.

PS5 exclusives come to PC now and I really don't mind waiting, I have too much to play as it is

I have a Series S but it’s pretty much exclusively used by the kids. I’ve barely played anything on it in two years ownership as everything is pretty much on PC too and runs far better on my machine.

Haven’t bothered with a PS5 and as Sony now appear to be slowly releasing all their 1st party stuff on PC I probably won’t bother.

The PS4 is still under the TV too but basically hasn’t been used since I got my first gaming laptop 3 years ago (upgraded last year) and I’ve not really looked back.

Switch still gets a look in now and again.

I've been eyeing up a PS5 for at least a year, but what with the difficulty getting them, then the shitty price increase, and now the cost of GPUs, I just thought "fuck it" and I'll stick with PC. Most of the big games are carrying over anyway.

I do quite fancy a DualSense controller, though...

I keep watching this thread as even though I'm not in the market for a 4090, it seems to have turned into general PC gaming chat.

I have a PS5, I'm 50/50 on keeping it - mostly use it as a media player at the moment (it's not great at this) but it is convenient to stream games to the Deck on occasion and I have an existing library of titles (but as ever, choice paralysis). I don't think it would cost anywhere near the selling price to buy the games from my PS library on Steam that I want to play on the Deck, and there aren't many exclusives I want to play that I can't emulate. I think the indecision means it's time to let it go, and it'll also mean I no longer need to continue paying for PS+ - subscription ends in March, watch this space.

The problem with Game Pass on PC is that the game downloads are the Microsoft Store versions, which often lag way behind Steam and the console versions.

Senua's Sacrifice had no HDR support on Game Pass despite Steam having had it for nearly 6 months at that point. Doom 3 doesn't have gamepad support. There were performance issues with Psychonauts 2 at launch that were resolved within a week on all platforms except the PC Game Pass version.

I'm in a position of luxury where I have both consoles as well so can play the Series X version when the PC one is lacking, and I'm sure for most people PC Game Pass will be all you need, but it's still not as good as it should be.

Plus a lot of the time you can't tweak and mod the games the same way you could the Steam version.

Eh, steam and other pc stores are definitely better but for almost free and the majority of the games working fine, its good enough for given the cost

Its the odd games like the ascent which had broken RTX and the examples above, but for the most part the versions on there are completely on par in core perf

My 4070ti arrived 🙂

But I won't be able to install it until late tomorrow night 🙃

Right, it's in, I've installed the latest drivers from Nvidia, Red Dead Redemption 2 is downloading as we speak as I've been meaning to replay it and want to do so at 60FPS or more, and I'm considering subbing to a month of EA Play Pro so that I can have a go on that thar new Dead Space remake with all the bells and whistles.

Is there anything else I need to do in terms of setup, or should I just get stuck in? I've got MSI Afterburner installed but don't really know a great deal about overclocking, and would rather not bother with anything faffy, to be honest.

Ta-dah!

(Also, is there anything I can do about the ugly power cables? On my last GPU the 2 connectors was on the far right of the unit and were easier to tuck around to the side, but on this one the plug is slap bang in the middle, and with the 2-cables-into-1-adapter thing they're not very easy to hide. It's messing with my aesthetics, man.)

Not a huge amount you can do with the power cables unless you pick up one of those new PSUs that have the specific connection for nVidia's socket thing. If you get one of those, it'll come with the single lead needed, which would make things much neater indeed!

Think yourself lucky though - the 4090s have four sodding cables sticking out of the damn thing. It's a monstrosity in that respect!

Ah well - I'm sure I'll get over it. The GPU also came with an anti-sag bracket, but one of the places on my mobo where I can attach it is covered by my M.2. SSD. It doesn't look very...saggy, though, and is secured by three screws on the I/O panel, so I think I'll be ok.
