Two new PC builds with 4090s on their way to the office this week, super pumped. Question now is; I’m also ordering an OLED for the office for reviewing 4k projects, do I keep using the Ultrawide I have now or switch to the Oled for the main monitor?

Switch, you'll never go back.

Looking at Nvidia's recent laptop GFX announcement would indicate that the entry price for Next Gen PC gaming now effectively starts at $1000 for the lowest spec RTX 4050 models, which is a $200 price rise over the RTX 3050 starting price from mid-2021. I'd expect that sort of bump for the rest of the desktop line-up, once they decide to officially announce it, given the price bumps for the currently available known RTX 4000 cards.

What would be a fair price to ask for a boxed and sparkling clean 2080TI on here, £200, maybe £250, or is that taking the piss?

a quick ebay search of sold listings, show a lowest of £370, up to £480...so, nock off 10/15% ebay fee, and find one that closely matches yours for a fair price!

I can't see the 4060 having an msrp under $500 and that means you will likely have to pay close to $600 at retail.

I'm giving serious consideration to spending the money I'm setting aside for PC upgrades on a PlayStation 5.

Fuck, I just dropped £800 on a graphics card for a PC I don't have yet. :omg:

I dunno if I was undercharged for this, but got it for £799.99 so I'm happy with that. They don't seen to be in stock anywhere for that price now.

Now to build the PC!

There are always a few cards available on launch day at msrp so the companies can say the card is available at msrp when in reality only a few people can get them at that price. Once a week or so goes by you will see very, very few if any at all msrp cards.

That anti-climax when a new PC build arrives and you stare at the windows desktop like every other machine, just about had time to install chrome and remote desktop before leaving the office so hopefully ready to unleash some fury next week.

Not like the wild adventures of the 3x 780Ti watercooled build that is actually sitting on the floor below this one, unused in years.

Correct! I was a bit concerned that loads of ridiculous lights were going to come on when I fired it up but pleased to report there’s just a colour strip by the psu at the top.

Arguably that is entirely down to the chip supplier. NV enforce both component control and design control over board partners and enforce minimum pricing on the stuff they supply which makes MSRP a fictional unsustainable goal for any company wanting to stay in business, or you get divorced, like EVGA decided to.

Those two 4090 machines? Yeah turns out there’s a directX12 issue with Windows11 and I can’t even open Unreal Engine 5 without it crashing so the machines are sat in the corner of the room doing nothing until I can be bothered to sort out a windows 10 install. Such a pain in the ass.

Well, for gaming the 4090 is incredible. I went from a card that struggled, at 1440p with RT and balanced DLSS etc or 4K without RT, to hit 60fps (a bit of faffing to find the right mix at the start of every game) to a card that I'm playing games at 120fps with RT at 4K, without DLSS.

Fire and forget for the first time. Put everything up to max and just play.

The card is insane.

It really is. It's the first time I've really felt a full-on generational leap since...hell, probably the 1080ti to be honest. I've gone from that, to a 2080ti, to a 3090 and there's been obvious performance gains, but nothing especially wild - nothing that tempted me to embrace 4k gaming fully. Yet, this card - and yes, it's terribly expensive I know - this card just does everything and more that I was doing at 2k, but at 4k. That's pretty damn impressive!

No regrets whatsoever!

Man, I really want one, but I just can’t seem to find one here in the US. Would prefer the FE but Best Buy is just constantly showing as sold out.

As an aside, would my 5900x be a bottleneck for it? Or should it be ok?

I'm using a 4090 with a 10700K for now and it flies.  Your processor is a bit better than mine so I'd imagine you should be fine, the increase I got moving from a 2070 Super was huge!

Anyone here from Ireland know what the situation is WRT getting founders editions (4090)? Purely theoretical of course, I would never think to spend this sum of money on a card. But, you know, hypothetically, if I were to what are the options? I don't think scan ship to Ireland anymore (brexit lol)

Seems like we can only get the way more expensive AIBs.

I believe we can't unless we use something like Addresspal or Mailboxde - even for the French/German sites who sell FEs. Nvidia seem to have a deal where you can't ship FEs out of the market but didn't bother to set something up for Ireland.

Is there much point in getting a 3000 series nowadays, or are the 4000s a much better value proposition? I've got a 165hz 1440p monitor, so it would be great to get something that can run at 120fps in ultra, and I've not got an RTX card at the moment. Not that I've got the money, mind...

If you can get a good price on a 3090, then at 1440p you're absolutely golden. It will run absolutely everything at top levels no problems.

Hmm, the going rate for a 4070 Ti is about £850, by the looks of it, so that's that out of the window, ha.

I look in this thread every few months with the naive belief that I'll suddenly be able to get something amazing for about £500, then I quickly run away again when I see the prices. I was thinking I'd flog my PS5 for about £400 and get a new GPU, as my RX 5700 is 4 years old now, but that wouldn't even be enough to get me half way. Plus, with a Series X and a Steam Deck, there's not much point. And I don't even play PC games that much.

Nope, I'm running away from this thread before I start trying to justify it to myself...

That's the problem, you read things like 'the 4090 is amazing, runs everything at 4k gillion fps' and the brain worms settle in ("imagine how good RDRII would look and run..")

Then you get the fecking thing and play 20 yo ancient games on it most of the time, barely justifying the outlay lol

Funnily enough, my desire to replay RDR2 at a high frame rate, with all the bells and whistles, is what caused me to come snooping around this thread in the first place. If bloody Rockstar did a current-gen update then I'd not have considered it.

I have the same cpu and a 2070 super.  I've been pondering an upgrade and may go for a 4090 later in the year if finances permit.  Glad to see it works with a 10700K

So I’ve decided to get a 4090 (in for a penny in for a pound right?)

Any manufacturers to avoid due to bad customer service / returns etc.

Any specific cards you would recommend?

Are the TUF cards worth more than the cheaper cards from other vendors ?

What would you say is the best 4090 on the market right now and why?

The best one is the founders edition one. If you have a look at the Gamer's Nexus reviews of it, it's actually full of praises for how well made it is. Plus, it's the 'cheapest' one out there.

It's not to say the other ones out there aren't absolutely fine, but in terms of bang for buck (and yes, I realise this is a pretty silly statement of affairs!), then if you can get an FE one, it's the one to go for.
