I think the optimum tech review has sold me on the NR200P MAX.

For a n00b like me I think it will do the trick. Less stuff to think about.

Will the 4080 fit in it though? It looks like it's pushing that 3080 (not sure what that card is, mind) in that box and the 4080 is so much bigger in all ways.

Seems to yeah. This is someone's 4090 in it.

I’ve got the NR200P case with a 3080 in it. It’ll easily take a 3 slot card. It’s a cracking case to to build with -  all the detachable panels make it easy to hide cabling too.

Ah nice. You happy with it, build quality, finish etc?

I went from a Dan Case A4 because of temperatures and reluctantly choose the Coolermaster. As it happens I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to install and the overall design build is really good.

Coolermaster were also really good to deal with. My glass panel had an imperfection and after a quick email they sent a replacement panel.

Yes but the overwhelming feeling even from enthusiasts who will buy the 4090 is that the 80 is a dumb product. No one fits the description of complaining about the 4080 but intending to buy it anyway. It's £1200-£1500 for 4080 cards in the UK. If you're spending that much, you're buying a 4090. If you're not, you're not buying it as its priced out of the budget of that market. AMD just made it even dumber as a bonus while making the 4090 no less desirable. And obviously you saw what happened with the 12GB.

Nvidia will send the 4080 out as a card that desperate people who want a 4090 but can't get hold of one (not that many) as an interim card. Which is a niche of a niche market. Then they will drop the price at some point to actually sell the thing and not just drive all sales to the 4090 but certainly there is no one that I can see who wants the 80 let alone buying one.

This. I feel like my 4090 was worth the money, fire hazard issues aside. But the 4080 doesn’t seem worth it at all.

Ah, so despite it all, one can argue that in the world of stupid the 4090 represents awesome value for money :D .

4080 is clearly a great card, it's just around £300-400 too expensive.

But there we go I guess.

If you take what seems like the Nvidia position on this, the baseline price is the flagship part and whatever performance of the parts below it, their price is reduced from that starting price by a similar amount.

So using that logic, RTX 4080 is about ~25% slower in most games so is priced at 25% less, which in some ways is actually fairer. The more you pay, the more you get :P

If you compare either of them to the RTX 3080, then you're essentially now having to pay more to get more performance and neither gives you any extra performance for free in the majority of games. The RTX 4080 is worse value, but it's not terrible value relative to the RTX 4090.

Seeing the early rumours about the RTX 4060 and that also seems destined to disappoint the Moore's Law isn't dead believers.

But if you use the AMD cheat, then maybe you can still get your cake and eat it too. A claimed 50% extra performance for the same MSRP as a previous gen part or even a price cut if you are comparing it against their previous flagship released earlier this year.

I still can’t quite work out if nVidia were geniuses for positing £649 as their rrp for the FE 3080, or absolute fuckwits. There was clearly no way their board partners could compete with that price, and nVidia certainly couldn’t hope to make enough to fill demand at the time.

But…£649 for a 3080. Man, that would have been good ;)

Actually, just checked and it was £690 that I paid at the time.  Still an amazing price.  Got lucky with the F5 lottery.

The launch day for those cards was such a bummer. It really was a lottery whether your F5 key press was in with a shot or not.

I was expecting it with the 4090, so I wasn't too upset about missing out on that - especially so as I got one a week or so afterwards anyway, but that 3080 card was/is such a good deal (I mean, sure - £650 is still a whole chunk of change, but it's an awesome card).

Good times for everyone then!

Fantastic work from GN. So the question is, as a recent 4090 owner, what now?

Well, nothing much? I mean, the overall failure rate is still astronomically low, and if you've made sure your cable is in properly, plus not bending in an awkward fashion to stop potentially working out somehow, then you've not got a huge amount to worry about really. If nVidia make the decision to offer free cables to everyone who bought one from them, then I'll happily take it, but I'm not overly worried about the situation.

Same, I guess I meant what happens with all the journos being told they’re wrong, all the buyers convinced it wasn’t user error, etc. The damage is likely done to Nvidia’s rep, especially as it’s being repeated everywhere by AMD fans etc.

Followup, headline is Nvidia came to the same conclusion and the failure rate is 0.04%.

My main takeaway from all this is that GN is on another level, a real gold  standard in investigative journalism of any type.

As you've seen from the follow up video, this affected about 50 reported cases worldwide from sales over 150k plus I think and was primarily user error. Keep the cable plugged in all the way and you're good.

Funny thing was it was probably morons like Jayz2cents who probably caused some of the literal damage. Even before launch he was freaking everyone out about bending the adaptor (which did not end up being a cause of failure) which meant some people were probably so delicate plugging it in that it didn't go in all the way. The freakout and hyperbole about damage is probably the cause of the user error damage.

It's the modern online freakout community. Do you remember other hardware that was overheating but everyone just got on with it and kept getting new ones? The failure rate here is about 0.5% but you would have thought every card was affected from the lunacy on reddit. The red ring overheating fiasco was over 50%

  • 1 month later...

$800 for a 70 series card what a fantastic time for gpus, the 4060 will be $500 won't it?

$700 for the 4070, $600 for the 4060ti and $500 for a 4060 is my prediction for the product line. Oh and there is no founder's edition for this card so we will see a handful of cards released at msrp then just about everything will be $850 or more.

For a 70 series card 😕

Not surprising considering a lot of the hardware side increases seem to be by brute forcing more power into it. 285w isnt that much more than a 3070. Interesting to see how the performance compares there, as it seems to me that a lot of the more scalable gains that apply equally to the 'lesser' 40xx cards with be driver-side, with dlss 3, frame gen and the like.

That said, the messaging on dlss3 compatibility is still a bit garbled imo. Every now and then I'll see mention on some site that at least some of that will be implemented on 30xx cards too, though never with specific details of what or when. Saw that just now in fact with the updated list of upcoming dlss3 games coinciding with an update to dlss 3 later this quarter, so maybe then? Would certainly give a bit of extra longevity to 30xx cards.
