Well, that’s me out today at least. What a phenomenal waste of a lunch break with hours left of the day to stew over high level incompetence :P

I'll have to play PS5 this weekend. Fucking disgusting.

It's fairly obvious that this is now the shape of things to come; hardware launches just aren't fun or viable any more.

Valve did it right with the Steam deck imo.

Put your name down and just wait your turn.

Yeah. And I'm sure they screened for several dozen being ordered by the same card to the same address or different addresses too. Shareholders do like "new thing sold out in a split second, all restocks instantly sold", though. On the other hand, I suspect there are still people waiting in some of the queues over at Overclockers for their 30 series. Hah!

What are scalpers expecting? You can buy in stock 2.2k new 4090s which would presumably be around the scalp price

It's fairly clear that Nvidia need to stack another £1000 on the price for the 50-series and see if this happens again.

I remember signing up for the EVGA mailing list/queue for the 30 Series, and only about a month ago I had the only email from them about it saying they was closing the queue.

And then they stopped making Nvidia cards altogether.

So no crypto, only decent card is £1700, no pandemic, apparently been warehoused for  months

Still no cards to buy

If it was a botswarm that ate them all (and honestly, when everything sells out in a split second, it probably is) then their orchestrators might just be hoping for the same conditions as last time. After all, what do they really have to lose? They can return unopened cards some way into the future if nobody is biting on their prices. I'm actually more interested in how this shakes out than actually getting hold of a card right now.

This is very likely the way it's going to be from here on out now. Even if we rule out bot involvement, it's clear that Nvidia simply can't meet the demand for their product or are choosing not to in order to generate "sold out in a fraction of a second" hype headlines. Hell, maybe there are no bots at all and they just want to capitalise on people saying "fuck! It sold out! Who knows when it's going to be back in stock - I'll just grab a 30".

Yeah, the right-wing asshole is long gone - it's more about their awful handling and gouging during the 30-series sales. Not to mention holding people's place and money in queues for cards that just weren't ever going to be coming through. I know that in order to be a good capitalist, I ought to see that they're not actively ripping people off and have actual stock in hand and thus be okay spending money now they're being "okay".

But it's hard to bring myself to do it.

All academic now, I was just sat on their site waiting to see if the stock levels would hold, but they basically got cleared out between refreshes! It happened so suddenly it was probably either bots ensuring a raised price floor for their ebayed stuff, or their site wasn't reporting properly in the first place.

I do find it slightly ironic that people are complaining about a store price gouging but lining up to buy nvidia cards because nvidia would never price gouge would they?

I honestly never knew there were issues with ocuk, it is where I have bought all my GPUs I think, including my current rx6600 which I got for msrp back in March from them.

Well, we're not lining up really, we're not allowed to! And honestly, while I had to wait a bit, I got a 30-series card at the RRP from Nvidia (or rather, Scan who were the distribution arm) - last time round you could see the prices creeping up on Overclockers just by refreshing at points. I'll give them a few generations to prove they can behave themselves and maybe buy a 70-Series from them if they keep their noses clean.

All I want to do is pay for it and be put in a queue for whenever it comes. I don’t give much of a shit when it comes, I just don’t want the song and dances that happened with the previous gen.

It’s fucking crazy that something can’t be done to mitigate this silly situation.

but I guess if it was simple, it would be happening…

hey ho.

Way to have empathy for those in distress bro

Eurgh. Prepare yourselves for price increases already on those 4090 cards. Every price that was showing on the Scan website has now mysteriously vanished. I'm not a betting man, but I'm going to assume that those extra £200+ that Overclockers were charging on their cards are going to be the norm going forwards.

I may very well be 'nope-ing' out for the forseeable future.

Maaaan, I was really banking on that card to keep me warm over the winter months.

that’s what overclockers did for the 30x0 series. And then the cards never came. Indeed, many didn’t come to the extent that they weren’t delivered before they went out of production.

Yeah, according to their forums they’ve just massively oversold again. This time they’re apparently not proactively announcing it.

Shame. The fact that everywhere sold out instantly just reinforces NVidia's view that they can charge what they want.

Luckily, I went through the FOMO phase back in the 3dfx/Voodoo card days.. and I'm not overly fussed now. I mean, a faster PC would be nice but not £5,000 nice.
