my bet is that they put the 4080 as expensive as they did partly so that the 3080 doesn’t need to drop much.

Oh well. I don't even know why I'm looking. I've got a Steam Deck and hardly ever play games sat at my PC anyway.

Look to the second hand market but a lot of them will be ex miners offloading if you want cheaper

My situation is funny, I've always aimed for the midrange then run that system into the ground, lagging generations behind, but being several years overdue for a refresh thanks to COVID, mining etc. makes it easy to justify treating myself to more this time. Then getting a 4k120 TV moves the goalposts even futher.

 

It's the first time in my life I can probably feel relatively OK about throwing £1500 at a PC and it's come at the exact point where that still leaves you a ways off the current top tier :lol:. Don't get me wrong, I feel very lucky to be able to do that, will likely be blown away by it and for the vast majority of stuff I play it will be more than enough even at 4k but still, it feels like the PC-building impulse just can't catch a break these past few years.

 

Having made up my mind to wait I was very tempted by Uzi's 3080 but decided the new stuff was so close that cracking wouldn't have been wise.. I'm not so sure now! I see you can get used 3090 FEs for slightly over £700 if you're lucky at the moment, I guess worst case scenario I might go that route. With the pricing on these new ones I'm not sure how much more they'll drop short-term.

 

If AMD can offer better value in raw performance I'll probably go with them, I'm not a massive fan of how upscaling looks (I think I'd prefer to just drop settings and/or cap lower in general) so I'm not overly fussed about DLSS and better RT is a 'nice to have' more than a priority. What worries me more is their rep for poor performance and issues with OpenGL, older DX versions etc. since I play loads of old stuff and emulators. It seems like they've made attempts to address that in recent drivers but as far as I can gather, it still seems early doors.

I don't really see the point in a 4K monitor, unless it's so big it might as well be a TV. It just seems like a waste of GPU power.

 

I use a 3080 with a 4K TV incidentally, which runs everything very well at 60fps. It won't quite run Cyberpunk fully maxed out, but it's close enough without costing you over a grand.

If you want to run modern stuff at 4K with raytracing you really need DLSS (or FSR2 I guess). If you're happy to run without RT than you might be okay though.

 

Honestly though, as nice as raytracing is I don't think I'd miss it that much.

Is the TV on your desk? Doesn't that give you a headache with it being so close? Or do you sit in an armchair or something and use a wireless keyboard?

Pretty much. I also can't run some of the games I absolutely adore like Cyberpunk at ultra 60fps. My gaming time is premium and limited to me and is basically my only hobby that has real expense (gym costs £20 a month) so I'd rather just enjoy it as best I can and am lucky enough to afford it without issue.

 

Years ago, I was the bang for buck guy and after the xbox 360, the first PC I build had a GTX 460. I've slowly made me way up the ladder to insanity because hey, could be dead soon so why not!

I have two 1080p monitors on my desk. Well, a 1080p one and an older 16:10 one. The TV is on a stand in front of a sofa, and yeah I use a wireless keyboard/mouse thing for that.

My own theory is that the eventual 4080 Mobile will have specs very similar to the lower tier desktop 4080 so that Nvidia can call the mobile chip a full-on 4080. There's going to be a big performance difference because it'll be limited to a much lower wattage but the paper specs will look favourable.

Lol. I'll wait until shit settles and we see price cuts after AMD's upcoming offering is on sale, the 3XXX inventory has been moved on and Nvidia capitulates that those prices won't fly in a post mining boom, energy madness and a recession.

My aging pc has been creaking at the seams for the last 6 months but I’ve been holding off until this and Intel’s Raptorlake get released. But man, I don’t know. Not sure how much longer my rust bucket can last though.
 

Something will collapse first. It will either be my restraint and bank balance or my love of PC gaming. God damn it, this is going to cost me a fortune isn’t it?

Just put a 4K display on your desk and make sure no application window is expanded beyond 1080p when you're up close. ;)

Overclockers put up cards (no preorder option obvs) but you can see some prices. They range between £100-£300 above nvidia FE prices so starting around £1799 up to £2000. Plus a lot of them look stupid. There is a basic Inno3D 4090 XC3 or something for £1679 which I think is the only RRP one.

 

I HOPE the FE's aren't insanely limited because not only is the FE price the upper limit of what I'm willing to pay, it genuinely looks better built than most of these things. I'm guessing Scan will prob sell FE's again on behalf of Nvidia so I will just try and get a FE drop from them and if I cannot get one on launch day so be it, I can wait. If I can I'm definitely getting a 4090 FE the moment they drop.

 

I didn't link the 4080s as they are bad cards price to perf wise and no one should buy them!
