Spent most of the last hour driving with the Newcastle- Liverpool game on the radio in the car.  To get things straight, Pope’s red card means he’s suspended for the league cup final.  The second choice goalkeeper Martin Dubavkra was sent out on loan to Manchester United for some reason and he only played two games before being recalled but they were in the League Cup so he’s cup tied (and he’ll actually get a winners medal if Man Utd win next week) which means the shirt is probably going to some bloke called Loris Karius.

Does this Karius fella have any previous experience playing in cup finals?

Assuming they don’t recall Darlow from his loan at Hull, it’ll be either Karius or Mark Gillespie who is a local lad but hasn’t played a game for Newcastle and his club history is Carlisle United, Blyth Spartans, Walsall and Motherwell.

Fuck me Redknapp still claiming Pope shouldn't have been sent off.

This time saying if he was a defender he wouldn't have been sent off.

Yes he would, as the last player. You can't claim the defender being there behind the goalkeeper stops it being a goal scoring chance, as if anything with it being a goalkeeper in that situation the last player has less chance of stopping Salah as he can't use hands.

Any player doing that in that exact situation is being sent off.

Would Darlow not be cup tied?

He went to Hull in January so he hasn’t played any cup games for them. From the BBC Sport feed

The League Cup final will be two days short of two years since Loris Karius' last first-team game of football - for Union Berlin against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.

Mark Gillespie, 30, played three League Cup games for Newcastle in September 2020, shortly after joining on a free transfer from Motherwell, but nothing since.

Emi Martinez is a massive weirdo but this is such classic Unai Emery, manufacturing a fallout with any player who has a bit of personality and balls about them.

You manufacturered that out of what he said?.....right.
