Football thread 2022/23

Look we all know that the rules of football are more a set of guidelines than hard and fast set of laws. Like a good tabletop RPG session, the players and officials should be prepared to throw out the rules in service of a more fun and dramatic narrative development. All parties are to be applauded here.

I'm only sort of half joking.

I do remember how pleased everyone was the rules were followed so slavishly when Martinelli was sent off for two nothing fouls in the same incident, something that has literally never happened before or since, but now we’re all about free jazz interpretations of the laws to make them feel right. Funny old game.

Newcastle up to third with a late goal from their £60m striker.  Eddie Howe has worked miracles there on a shoestring.

Doesn’t Aston Villa have a higher net value of players than Newcastle?

I know everyone hates Newcastle and all their fans now but just reducing every event or comment to it just being because they have evil money is quite boring and lazy commentary.

There’s a huge wealth of evidence that Howe has done a great job at organising the team.

Great weekend for United fans.

Was a terrible game as we were abject. Worst performance of the season by far. Got a 250 mile trip home now too. Nice stadium but jobsworth stewards made for a miserable 90 minutes

United a very very good though. You should get some silverware this season.

That first was a proper Spurs goal to give away.

At least Lloris gave his usual game a goal away early doors so we could start the acceptance process, Conte will surely put Sanchez and Romero on now to ensure a cricket score :(

Yeah it'd be worse if we took the lead then let Lloris do his usual sabotage. He needs to go at the end of this season. He's at David James levels of calamity now.

Saw this, what are spurs fans opinions?

Who's likely to go in for him now that City have Haaland?

It will be Man Utd, Bayern and Madrid won’t it? Bohely too maybe.

Kane would be a better fit for them than Haaland who is a bystander when it comes to build up play, Kane at least gets involved. My bet is he'll go to Bayern when his contract runs out.

Romero is a fucking lunatic. What is VAR for if not for that?

I think when the ref doesn’t give a yellow for a blatant handball stopping a break he can’t really car a little love tackle from Cuti ;)

Newcastle are the third biggest net spenders in the Premier League since 2021/2022 behind only Chelsea and Man U (or fifth total spenders behind Arsenal and Man City too).

Obviously Howe is doing a great job there, but they have spent a fair amount of money.

Exactly, they’ve spent over £200m since their takeover. A true underdog story to rival Man City’s fairytale.

Is anybody trying to claim that Newcastle haven't benefitted from having lots of money though?

Edit: And even so, they've only had big money to spend in two transfer windows, versus many for the likes of Chelsea, City, Man Utd, Liverpool etc, so Howe is clearly having an impact.

Partey should definitely have got booked for the handball, but the softness from the ref started when he didn't book Romero for going through the back of Nketiah early on. If the referee had set the bar properly Romero should have had about 4 yellow cards.
