Man Utd have to be favourites for the Carabao Cup now. Forest In the semi final and I assume Henderson won’t be allowed to play.

That Newcastle team are doing pretty well so far this season.

 at Potter's "I have the hardest job in football" comment. Yeah, okay then.

I'm sure if he fails the multi-million pound payoff he would get would help him get over it.

Max Rushden article about Harry Kane on the guardian, i got thinking about his free kick record again. Saw this

and this:

It's peculiar to me that someone so good at shooting from 25 yards would struggle so much with free kicks, just getting the ball up and down is not something he can do. He does get close a few times though with lower ones. Interesting to see them all together because I've always wondered, makes it looks like he is trying, even ones impossibly far away doesn't faze his optimism.

Free kicks are a completely different discipline though and the technical skills for it naturally fall more to midfielders (which is why they generally take them). It's more surprising really that Kane continues to have a go, there must be better players in the team capable.

Well yeah I recognise getting the ball up and down is the key skill, but it's not far fetched to think a player who more than most strikers you can think of over the last decade can regularly bend in a 25 yarder wouldn't be so terrible at them. Especially as robotic professionalism is what Kane does better than anyone that I'd expect him to apply that to free kicks and it's not like he hasn't evolved as a player becoming more of a playmaker as he ages. Apart from his finishing he is more of a midfielder now isn't he.

Midfielders better at free kicks, sure, but there's still plenty of forwards who you wouldn't necessarily think they'd have any free kick speciality to their game. There's nothing in Rashford's game of making runs, one on one finishing that makes anyone think he'd be good at free kicks. I've seen clips of free kicks in his youth, I like that he keeps at them, I don't expect him to score when he stands there but I know it's a possibility.

Henry was an athletic runner who more than Kane would hammer in shots like a bullet, none of the curlers Kane typically does yet could score free kicks.

CRonaldo couldn't really shoot accurately at all, he emerged more as a free kick taker than someone who scored 25 yarders, it seemed it a bit inexplicable to me as he'd score some ridiculously tight angled ones early on.

Rooney would score a few as well, similar to Kane in his all around game as he aged.

Come on, it's odd a player as prolific as Kane who is specifically chasing the all time premier league record can't master free kicks to score even a few in 8 years. I can't believe that it I turned up to training and said to Kane; right we're going to practise free kicks all day today that he'd sky them all.

Some of the comments suggest a player should lay the ball off to him like they used to with Shearer. Another striker who excelled at them...

(it's unfortunate I sound like I really care about this)

This is interesting.  Famously, he ended up taking all the corners and free-kicks during the 2016 Euros because according to Roy Hodgson he was the best striker of a dead ball in the squad.  If you look at that squad, it does lack a dead-ball specialist, but the likes of Rooney, Barkley, and Lallana were in there, so he must have some ability to do it, at least in training.  Some players are just more able to do it in training - Fred is apparently an excellent free-kick taker in training, but he hasn't ever shown this in a match until earlier this week when he hit the post with a beautiful effort.

Watching the video, Kane's problem is entirely his technique when striking the ball.  He hits too straight through the back of it.  His foot moves across to his left in the follow-through, but the swing itself is very straight.  He hits through the ball with some side whip, but doesn't do the thing the best free-kick takers do of hitting sort of upwards through the bottom half of the ball to apply topspin and create dip.  There are different techniques when hitting a free-kick, of course.  Rashford doesn't do this either - he always tries to hit knuckleballs.  Kane doesn't seem to be using any particular technique, he's just hitting the ball towards the goal, the same as he does in open play.  That's why they go into the wall more often than not, quite often at around waist-height.

A good day. A much needed three points for Villa, Juve get absolutely humped and my tip for Napoli to win the Scudetto in the rllmuk predictions thread is looking less dumb than it did in August or whenever we did it.
