Football thread 2022/23

Think the thing with Vialli for me was he was one of the biggest names and best players at a time for me when I was young and football seemed like one of the most important things. It feels in some way like a little bit of my own personal football golden age has gone - that bit of the Premier League where it was really starting to pick up momentum and big names, but still had that slight lack of corporate over-polishing.

Very sad news.

Really gutted to hear about Vialli. He was one of the nicest men in football by all accounts and a fantastic player. I remember his spell at Chelsea including that incredible game in Tromso, and the winner at Old Trafford to end United's massive unbeaten home record, with real fondness. The team that he played in and eventually managed were really special and played some of the most exciting football in the league at the time. You could see how much the other players loved him.

Buon viaggio, Luca.

Sounds like Burnley legend Wout Weghorst might be signing for Man Utd on loan for the rest of the season.

Always rated him.

On April 15th 2022, the football club I’ve followed for 30 years suddenly went very, very weird. And hasn’t stopped since.

Nah, that's clearly accidental.  You can see he realises in mid air that he's going to land on Traore and tries to avoid landing on him with any force.  He gets into a right tangle because as he takes off Traore's left leg swings round and collides with Robinson's left leg.  From then on he's got no control over where he's going to land but he tries to keep his left foot in the air to avoid stomping Traore into the ground.  He catches him, but he does a reasonable job of minimising the damage by getting his right foot down on the ground.  His instant reaction is to hold his hands up apologetically even before he fully lands, and is immediately looking round to see if Traore is okay.  It's an unfortunate collision, and the only way anyone could attribute malace to it would be if they came at it with some form of prejudice.  To be clear, I'm prejudiced against Robinson in that I can't stand the knobhead, but even I don't think that was in any way deliberate.

It's also really shitty to hope he suffers a serious injury.  I mean come on.

What are you on about lol, he’s a professional athlete whose apparent attempt to jump over a player took him a distance of about 8 inches. And it’s hardly an isolated incident with that guy.

I've just spent 10 minutes arguing the intent of Robertson on reddit and think I've burnt myself out, I'm on the 4th time of repeating the same things.

People think slow motion makes everything on the pitch look worse or do the smug 'lol you can tell the ones who don't play football'. I think he could have slowed down and pressed his hands on Traore and protected his legs, there's no reason to leap at all, especially not up when he knows a player is vulnerable below him, it's dangerous and he knows it. Of course he makes it look accidental as players always do.

When a player is chasing the ball and leaves their foot in as the keeper collects I think it's deliberate, when Tyrone Mings jumped an landed on Zlatan and then Oliveira, both times pretending he's just trying to balance himself i think it's deliberate. I think it says a lot that these things are so rare they almost never happen.

Okay the highlights are on now let me have a look at it as it happened.

...didn't show it. great.

Yet another farcical refereeing performance robbing us of a victory we deserved.

No way in a million years was Nunes offside. And they have the absolute cheek to claim there 'isn't sufficient video evidence'?

I suppose it's too much to ask to have video footage of the 6 yard box in one of the biggest and most famous grounds in the country? Never been needed before, I suppose?

Absolute cunt soup - the officials have cheated us out of a win and we've every right to be furious. And does anyone seriously believe that goal wouldn't have been given at the other end?

Ah well. On the plus side, we look like a totally different side under Lopetegui and I hope we keep this up over the next few weeks, and pick up points to get us out of trouble.

Hopefully we don't have to play against 11 players and a team of hapless wankers in black every week.

I wouldn’t worry too much, you should walk the replay.

Yeah, I thought you were robbed with that, but as @glb I can't see you losing the replay.

Same thing happened to us a few seasons ago against Spurs and Kane won a penalty. He was offside but but Lovren “attempted to play the ball” and instead of clearing it span it backwards off his boot.

Both times the goal is a result of awful attempts to clear a ball, so don’t do that if you don’t want this to happen.

The defender's always going to attempt to clear the ball, because of the attacker. It's a stupid interpretation of an increasingly stupidly implemented rule.

Well clear it then. The goal was because he headed it behind him into Salah’s path. The goal is caused by a defensive error.

But yeah I don’t like the rule either.

A classic Scottish Football farce moment at Raith Rovers Vs Dundee. I think the host is drunk.

Only an excuse stopped being funny when it stopped being fiction
