Football thread 2022/23

As I understand it, FIFA have issued a directive to referees to try to add the actual time lost to the matches in the World Cup, rather than just think "first half, add a minute, maybe four in the second, who gives a fuck." And that's led to games having a fuckload of time added on in each half to redress the balance and ensure the ball is actually in play for something closer to the 90 minutes prescribed.

Now, this discussion has probably already happened in the World Cup thread but I've not really been in that since the tournament started. If so, a few kindly links would certainly be appreciated.

But anyway - it strikes me that this is fucking stupid. I'm all for ensuring more play time and the gradual erosion of time wasting, but any timekeeping system which counts up to a fixed point and then keeps going for quite some time beyond that just doesn't make a great deal of sense any more, leading to silliness like goals being scored at "45' + 11'" and so forth. The concept of added on time only really works for me when it's a small correction or an aberration due to a lengthy stoppage, not when it's as much as a quarter of the time being added on just because of the natural stop-start nature of the sport.

A stop clock system would be an order of magnitude more sensible.

The problem is that football matches have been 90 minutes long for over a century and changing to a stop clock system means either it becomes 60 minutes, or games in real life last almost 3 hours.

I fully support the current adding on.  The WC is showing that the extra ten minutes is plenty to score a goal and that timewasting is biting some teams in the arse. Teams are going to get wise and stop doing it.

I wonder if a stop clock approach would actually change anything though? Time-wasting is often used to get a bit of a breather, disrupt a team's flow or reset tactically, so that wouldn't change using that method.

I'm not sure it would do much for players taking an age over set-pieces either, unless the clock is literally stopped until the ball is kicked (I don't know if that is part of the exact implementation of such an approach?)

It would be interesting to see some trials though.

But suddenly, now they're over 100 minutes. Halves are no longer 45 minutes plus a little bit, they're routinely edging into 55 minute territory. If a stop clock was used, it could be fundamentally identical to what's happening at the minute, just reported more usefully. As you note, though this could be a period of adjustment and the time will drop back down. Though some stoppages - like goal celebrations, substitutions and VAR - aren't going to go away so it's not entirely down to timewasting.

I think any clock that has to add another large chunk on just isn't fit for purpose. Whatever the solution is, it can't be 45 + 10. That strikes me as a failure to accept the current reality that a half just isn't 45 minutes long. I'm mostly irritated by how stupid the time looks.

Of course, it may all blow over after the World Cup, get ditched like the golden goal, and we'll back to the old 45 + 2.

Goal celebrations and substitutions are already designed to waste as much time as possible.  It isn't necessary for every player to pile into the opposition half to celebrate a goal and spend the next two minutes hugging, backslapping and so on.  Subs are already told to walk off the pitch by the nearest touchline, they just need to stop shaking everyone's hand on the way there, applauding the crowd etc.  (That first of those was in response to coaches telling about to be substituted players to switch to the wing furthest away from the dugout.)

I don't see any of that changing though. And in some cases, such as goal celebrations, I wouldn't want it to. A subsitution, even if carried out as quickly as possible, is still going to be a delay.

I really hope not.

Would the Billy Bragg of the Premier League resign over it considering his views on Newcastle and human rights issues or would he take the money so he could challenge Man City who he can't compete with due to Saudi money?

I think if this happens, Liverpool fans will be outraged but the Liverpool fans in Thailand and Dorset will be delighted.

People seem to be as sure stop clocks are the answer now as they were that VAR would solve everything five years ago.  It’s definitely not all being changed at the behest of broadcasters, right?

That's very true. There's the idea, and then the implementation of the idea when left to the IFAB, who'll probably choose the absolute worst implementation.

It would be the same (possibly even longer) than what they are now doing then? It sounds like you're a bit OCD and just can't handle 45+10 which sounds like a you problem not a football one.

The time wasting issue does need to be fixed, any fan of a team thats actually good will agree with that.

Some wholesomeness from the Women's game. Edith got Missy-Bo's signed boots for her birthday at our away game at Reading last night.

I'm sure one day money will swamp in and ruin it but it looks way more fun and inclusive following the womens game with a daughter than the traditional mens game nowadays.  Looks like you two are having the time of your lives!
