Barton got 18 months for 1,200 bets, but that did include betting on his own team to lose, but the amounts were mainly low.

Trippier got 10 weeks for telling his mates he was about to get transferred. The football authorities are in thrall to the betting companies so Toney can expect a hefty punishment.

Footballers aren't allowed to bet on football for good reason and this guy has breached that in fairly spectacular fashion. What do you suggest should happen? I don't think it particularly has anything to do with the authorities' relationships with betting companies (not that I'm defending any of the interaction between the football and betting industries).

I agree he should definitely be banned (especially if he was betting on his own team to lose or similar). But the football authorities definitely seem like they have to protect the betting industry and the punishments for minor offences look a bit over the top. Look at the ban for Trippier essentially telling his family and friends he was off. Or that goalie who ate a pie while on the bench a few years back. Neither one even caused any big payouts as far as I remember.

Didn't Trippier specifically tell them to place some bets though (or he knew full well they were going to)? I don't think the level of any payout is the point though.

I don't know what an appropriate level of punishment would be for Toney - if it turns out he is guilty, of course - but you'd I guess it will be a fair number of weeks and is going to really hurt the club.

Edit: And I've just read that the FA has said Toney was available for selection and was not picked for footballing reasons - which I'm a little surprised with given that he has been charged.

I think Trippier was just telling his mates that he was moving to Spain and signing for a new club - it’s hardly match fixing and it’s a nonsense market that the betting companies don’t need to run. Why should he not be able to share his  plans with mates? Is he responsible for their betting?

I can't remember how Trippier was found out, did one of his friends/family let slip or something?

His case was perhaps treated quite harshly, certainly compared to people making actual bets, but I suppose it's one of those things that footballers must get some guidance on as a no-no.

Part of the problem is that Trippier was banned for 10 weeks, missing 13 games for the crime of telling his friends he was being transferred - he wasn't match-fixing or affecting anything on the pitch, the only entities that could suffer in any way were a few bookmakers - but for example Luis Suarez was banned for 8 games for racially abusing an opponent. The footballing authorities consider facilitating the theft of some money from a betting company to be a worse crime than racial abuse. Similarly, Bendtner was fined more for wearing some pants that advertised the wrong betting company than the Croatian FA were when their fans racially abused Mario Balotelli en masse.

Putney, Barnes and Hammersmith are all close by but none are really that touristy, so an AirBnB might be a better option than a hotel.

Chiswick is leafy with decent cafes and bars but can’t think of too many hotels around there. Richmond is lovely, about 40 minutes from the ground by public transport but might be pricey, and again not a huge amount hotel-wise. You might be better off looking at deals close to central London and making a weekend of it. You can jump on the Piccadilly line to Hammersmith from the centre of town and walk to Craven Cottage (half hour stroll) or swap tubes to the District line at Earls Court. But that involves hoping the District line is working normally.

I lived just round the corner from Craven Cottage up until recently. There’s no hotels near and the closest are a soulless Novatel and a sad Holiday Inn in Hammersmith. Brook Green Hotel is probably the nicest place to stay in the vicinity. That or get an AirBnB in Putney, a short walk over the bridge, along the Thames past Fulham Palace (worth a visit) then through Bishops Park to Craven cottage, as Naysonymous mentioned. Don’t be tempted to get a bus or taxi to the ground, the Fulham Palace road is a relentless clusterfuck.

One of the best things about Fulham away is the walk through Bishops Park towards the.  You’ve totally got to do that the first time.

Love that park.

You could climb the fence the previous night, pitch a tent, light a (big) fire to stay warm. If you get bored you can reenact the scene in the first Omen with Patrick Troughton, pretty sure it was filmed in Bishops Park.

I know we shouldn’t wish bad things on people, but I’m cracking open a bottle of champagne when that oily, frog-faced, xenophobic cunt Farage pops his clogs.

Ireland played two friendlies over the last few days, and oh boy things do not look good.

In three of the four halves - the first of the 2-1 home defeat to Norway, and the whole of the 1-0 win in Malta - they just had absolutely no zip about them. No penetration, no creativity, nothing. Only in the second half against Norway did the team look like an attacking unit, with O'Dowda doing some good work on the left, and the keeper forced into making saves. Against Malta, next to fuck all was created, with Robinson's goal coming from a misplaced backpass rather than any incisive play. O'Dowda again did well after coming on and was unlucky to hit the post.

On these showings, I don't see much chance of qualifying for the Euros. Not that I would have expected to finish second in a group containing France and the Netherlands even if the side were playing well, but if they're fortunate enough to be in the playoffs - which is out of their hands - they'll not get past any side they're likely to face. And with that, I think Kenny's time will come to an end.

Kenny Cunningham spoke after last night's match about how the games against France and Netherlands would suit Ireland more because they would have better opportunities on the counter than against a massed defence, but while that might be enough to nick a heroic point, they're as likely to drop points to Greece, and probably even Gibraltar.
