Now we’re a decent way into this generation I thought I’d do a quick straw poll to see if/how choice of gaming platforms has changed.

I kept things to big screen gaming (yeah I know Switch is both) before anyone complains about lack of mobile phones on the poll.

No idea tbh, feels like I jump around between them all quite evenly.

I guess pure number of hours it would be PS5 because of Elden Ring, Returnal and Demon’s all being quite chunky. But I normally will have a bunch of gamepass stuff or indie games on Switch inbetween.

PS4, PS5, with some PC on the side. It's worth pointing out that I rarely buy multiple formats per generation, so I just go for which one makes sense for my gaming habits. Right now I don't have an Xbox One, Xbox Series or Switch - although I will pick up the other formats much later if they get cheaper and have something I want to play.

The PS4 purchase was a (petty? expensive?) response to the Xbox One reveal. Sure, they had already walked back on their statements, but the trust was already broken. (In hindsight though, it doesn't mean shit - so many developers and publishers of big games expect an online connection even if the console doesn't.) Besides that, it just had more exclusives I cared about - Bloodborne would be there, Nier Automata hadn't gone multiplatform yet, and I didn't have a PS3 to play Persona 5 on.

The PS5 made sense because of backwards compatibility and carrying over my existing library, but it didn't have as much of a killer app as Bloodborne. I didn't have a million stock tracking apps and bots set up - I just filled in the registration form for the invite-only restock window thing, and I got lucky. To be honest I've only really been playing Elden Ring and PS4 games on it (oh and FFVII Remake: Intermission I guess) but at least now I have the option to play other new-gen stuff.

The PC is still reliable for the handful of things I play, but I haven't upgraded it in an age so it tends to be a machine for emulators, indies (including all of those Twitch Prime offers) and Destiny 2. Still, as long as it can run the Persona remasters that are coming out... :P

PS4 was my go-to last gen (I didn't buy an XB1), but, thanks to Game Pass, I spend the most time playing my Series X this gen. The PS5 is used pretty much exclusively for exclusives, funnily enough. Switch, meanwhile, has bridged the gap between the two gens, though I'm using it less frequently than before as lots of the indies I would have played on it are on GP already.

Mostly PC. Second place did change, though - was a PS4 because of the games I enjoyed as part of the early days of PlayStation Plus, now it's a Series S because of the games I enjoyed as part of Game Pass.

Started off with a Series X then decided my PC was good enough to cover things on GamePass that came up.

Now just have the PS5 and an aging PC. Happy with both. I've been enjoying the PS5 the controller and the games feel like something generally new. So mostly been on that and playing the odd indie title on PC through GamePass and Steam.

My GamePass use has tailed of this year. Not been overly impressed with MSs AAA games so far. To be fair I wouldn't miss GamePass when the sub runs out.

Last gen I was mostly playing Xbox 360. Because the Xbox One and PS4 took years to build up a library of games I was interested in playing, and I felt like I couldn't justify getting one when I still had a massive backlog of incomplete 360 games (blame Games With Gold).

Not much PC gaming last gen either, mostly because my graphics card is woefully outdated and GPU prices have increased to figures that I refuse to pay on principle.

This gen I am mostly using the Xbox One X + Cheap Game Pass Trick that I got in January to catch up with all the last-gen stuff I missed. (Which so far has mostly been Halo MCC, Hades, Tetris Effect, and Superhot. Still got Doom 2016, Hollow Knight, Halo 5, Halo Infinite, Titanfall 2, and many others to go!)

I have no intention of getting a Series S/PS5 Digital Edition (no optical drive) or X/PS5 (too expensive). Very few exclusives I'm interested in, and I also don't have a 4K TV to take full advantage of the current gen.

No Nintendo Switch either; they are still as expensive as ever, and I have no interest in the handheld features, so I might get one when they release a cheaper TV-only version. (But as has been established in other threads: ha ha, as if that will ever happen!)

PS4 then Pro last gen, had a couple of Xbone’s but never an One X - this gen started with Series X but picked up a PS5 not that much later. Same as most gens, always have the Nintendo and the others fight it out for the multiplats - Xbox winning so far this gen, PS5 is a GT7 machine at the moment…

Last gen very much PS4 with a dash of Xbox and Switch as my handheld.

Went over the dark side and bought a gaming PC 3 years ago and have not looked back. Upgraded to a new laptop with 3070 last year and love it. I have managed to acquire more games for relatively little or no money then I will ever have time to play in several lifetimes.

Not been able to get a PS5 anyway even if I decided I really wanted one (still waiting for the exclusives really as everything first party I’ve wanted has been cross gen or coming to PC, although me being me if they were freely available I would have one by now) and the kids get 90% of the use of the Series S.

Still use the Switch too mind

I played mainly on Xbox but I did buy a PS4 and the 6 exclusive games for peanuts I wanted to play at the end of the gen. Then sold it a couple months later and lost nothing. That was a great couple of months.

Owned 2 switches but bought and sold them after hardly playing them.

Spent a good bit of time with Oculus Quest then sold it and got a Quest 2 on launch. I have played the Quest 2 for about 3 hours since I got it.

Last gen: Switch - BOTW & Mario Odyssey, some indies. PC second, PS4 third (mainly for VR). I had several Xbox One’s but never kept them for long.

This gen: PC - Wreckfest & JC3, PS5 - Astro’s Playroom & God of War, Xbox - F1 2020 & 2021 (Game Pass). The Switch gathers dust.

I‘m tempted to trim my selection down to PC & PS5 (Plus a Steam Deck when the time comes), the Xbox (as great as it is) feels largely redundant and I’ve never found the Switch comfortable to hold. The idea of ‘maintaining’ two libraries rather than 4 is appealing, as is the reduction of choice.

The PC is where I go for nearly everything I love that is old and new. More interesting indie games than you can count and so much free stuff it's frankly disgusting. And that's before you even think about Game Pass or emulation.

I've put a lot of time into console games obviously, but when it comes to the sheer number of different experiences and ways to play different things, PC gaming all the way.

Last gen I played a lot on the Switch and the One S was most used for weekly multiplayer sessions.

This gen, thanks to quick resume, it has pretty much been exclusively Series X. Some of the best money I’ve ever I spent.

Last generation I’d say I was pretty evenly split across all consoles.

This generation I spend most of my time split across Xbox Series X and my FPGA devices such as MiSTer and Analogue consoles, only really using my PS5 and Switch for their respective exclusives from Sony and Nintendo.

I’m currently putting together a gaming PC too which will finally allow me to catch up on  the keyboard / mouse type games that I’ve never had a way to play and emulation that FPGA can’t handle so I’m really looking forward to that.
