If someone's first experience of Persona 3 doesn't involve them getting catastrophically battered after delving deep into tartarus because Yukari Absolutely Refuses To Heal The PC, then have they really experienced Persona 3 at all?

"no but it's fine because you can just mod character control in on a downloaded ISO and memory card file"

"So the original's so great that you need to patch it before it's playable?"

"..."

This has been a regular experience on discussion boards outside of 'muk. It's like I'm drawn to the enticing glow of an ongoing dumpster fire.

Man, I forgot you couldn’t run around in P3P. I remember being a bit gutted when I found that out, but ended up loving it. Wish you could just do that in P4 and P5 tbh, or at least had the option.

yeah if people want to experience the original version you can manually use marin karin at every opportunity despite it barely ever doing anything.

My first Persona experience was Portable. Bought it as someone said it was great, my ex-wife even mentions how I got obsessed with it on holiday.

I've played FES since, still think Portable is much more approachable. I just give up on reading views now. People are funny.

Of course I do still have the physical games on my shelf, so admittedly my need for FES isn't as great. ;) And I never bothered with much of The Answer; I have a PCSX2 folder somewhere - and a vague plan to just turbo-mode through the tedium - but I've got to be really bored to want to try it, and I'm not there yet.

I've got it on my PS3 and fired it up the other day, but not gone back to it. I will at some point for completion sake.

Royal had a 30% discount during a Steam sale after about a month of being released - although discounts might not be that quick if Portable launches at a low price (like Golden.)

Yeah, P4(G) is well deserving of criticism for the way it deals with its female cast, and of both Kanji and Naoto's sexuality/gender presentation, and given the straight up rerelease it's not surprising that it's getting fresh focus on those issues. I would love to see a fully rewritten remake that tackles the subjects in a less, well, shit manner.

The only thing that bemuses me in the linked article is the way that 4 is presented as a big disappointment in comparison with 5 when, if anything, the biggest disappointment in the series is that Persona 5 is rife with even heavier (and even creepier, particularly given the story it tries to tell with its first villain) sexualisation of its female cast, and that it keeps the casual homophobia merrily baked in — the only "improvement" being that the latter isn't lampshaded by having a major plot beat centred on the topic. That nothing has been learned in the decade+ since 4 came out is an embarrassment.

It was shared in the P4G thread so I'll just add my response from there...

The problems surrounding Kanji and Naoto's arcs have been fodder for columnist hot takes for years, and nobody's ever happy. Recently I was mentioning in Steam discussion boards how the whole thing kind of offends me not so much because of the portrayal of being gay or the rejection of being gay (although they're both questionable)... but because of the half-arsing approach in general that tries to keep everyone happy by not committing but ultimately just ends up worse off for it. The whole theming of the dungeon and shadow archetype is camp as anything, but the shadow alter-ego is "accepting" when Kanji does his half-hearted "ain't about guys or chicks" spiel, but then Yosuke is NO HOMO BRO in subsequent scenes, but then there's the whole Naoto/Kanji thing later on.

A lot of his arc is just kind of farcical and the bits that are played up for hijinks undermine any potentially interesting character building. It's not like we haven't had decades of art celebrating diverse characters already, and they had the chance to do something cool. Like (others) say, I don't know what you could do about editing it without doing a lot of rewriting of the whole thing. It's kind of why even though I like the series I want more games - and studios - to borrow inspiration from it. Steal the elemental weakness system and the tiered dungeons and the social sim elements and the contemporary setting... but employ writers who understand these things a bit.

I just happened across the article the other day. I have Persona 4 Golden on the Vita, but never ever got round to playing it at the time even though it seems to be very much praised by gamers. I also have the ones that came out on the 3DS, but not sure were best to start.

P4.

PQ and PQ2 are really good, but they’re spin offs, and incorporate characters from P3 and P4 which won’t mean anything to you until you’ve played them.
