Persona 3 isn't that long. I completed the FES version of the main story mode in around 60 hours and with the visual novel design of Portable you could probably finish it faster because you can quick travel everywhere so don't have to waste time wandering around the locations and being able to control your teammates helps to speed up the battles as well.

I finished a replay (well, a new file, not NG+) of Portable today; 50h14m on my save at the end, but that's with the caveats of familiarity and Normal difficulty. That being said, I went with a "core" team I don't usually use. My favourite setup is Aki/Junpei/Yukari, but this time I went for Koro/Aigis/Ken. They have some good physical attacks and support skills between them, but the elementals of Koro and Ken are darkness and light, so you're relying on dice rolls a lot more. (And of course those particular skills are useless in boss encounters, so it gets more challenging.)

To be honest, I thought Portable was longer than my 50hrs, but there's probably not much between it and Golden. :)

Q. If I have purchased the PlayStation®4 version of "Persona 5 The Royal", can I upgrade to the PlayStation®5 version of "Persona 5 The Royal"?

A. We are sorry, but there are no products for purchasers of "Persona 5 The Royal" for PlayStation®4.

We would appreciate it if you could purchase "Persona 5 The Royal" for PlayStation®5 when you play with PlayStation®5.

There's barely any reason for existing owners to upgrade to this on PS5.

Nice; I'll keep an eye out for when it's live. :) I finally put some of my own 4G footage on Twitch earlier this year (only boss battle highlights rather than everything), so it'll be fun to compare notes. ^_^

I said above that I'd started to stream P4G, and I had, but with starting work last week and the school holidays too I'm finding it difficult to find the time to continue at the moment. Luckily I'm not far in so I might resume in September as I prefer streaming either during the day or once the kids are in bed.

Looking after my nephew today and he was going through my games collection - he picked Royal up with the typical “hey it’s the Smash Bros. character” response :D and so I’ve ended up installing it again. Not sure if he’ll actually get anywhere before all of the intro scenes are over, but I’ll take any gateway drug opportunity before the game is released on everything.

Just spotted that there is now a fan translation of the PSP version of Persona 2 : Eternal Punishment so have whacked that on my Vita replacing the PS1 release. They seem to have done a nice job too.

So now with having the PSP versions of Persona, P2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment, P3P, P4G and P5 Royal I've got the best versions of all the games. Well, until I shell out for P4G and P3P on the PS5.......

Not sure P5R will be worth a PS5 upgrade as I already have the DLC and the graphical upgrade won't be very noticeable I would guess.

Sweet, I might have to check that out. EP was a bit of a slog in general, but the PS1 jank didn't help and I had to figure out different emulation solutions whenever it would hit a disc access error or some other nonsense.

And of course some extended notes are available below :)

I'll have a read of that once I play through it. Nice thing is you can import the outcomes from Innocent Sin, not sure it will work with different regions.

The fan translation needs patching in, but I found one that had already been done which is handy as I'm on a Mac and it's a pain to patch on there

There's no harm in playing 5 first, but 3 and 4 may feel a bit antiquated in comparison! They're missing 5's more flashy presentation, 5's more elaborate bespoke dungeons and 5's various unique gameplay gimmicks (baton pass, negotiation, the extended confidant perks, etc.)

Even though 5 isn't my personal favourite, it probably makes the best first impression if you’re new to the series.

Well I'm playing Final Fantasy 7 properly for the first time at the moment, looks great on the Steam Deck. Would they be more old school than that?

Man, even though I have a gamepass ultimate subscription I am very tempted to just buy the games on Steam. I could easily play them on the Deck then.

There is something about Jrpgs and hand held gaming that just click perfectly together.

No, nothing that oldschool. :D Sounds like you’ll get on with them just fine.

surprised no one beat me to posting this groundbreaking news:

ATLUS is partnering up with Pandasaurus Games to publish a Persona 5 Royal® card game designed by Emerson Matsuuchi (Century: Eastern Wonders and Foundations of Rome).

Matsuuchi teases about the gameplay: “Players will take on the roles of their favorite Phantom Thieves and fight to change the world in this cooperative card-based strategy game.”

Co-owner of Pandasaurus Games, Nathan McNair, can’t wait for Persona 5 Royal® to get into players’ hands. “As a diehard fan of Persona 5 Royal® – I cannot wait to bring the Palaces, Velvet Room and world of Persona 5 Royal® onto tabletops everywhere in 2023.”

Pandasaurus Games is aiming to publish Personal 5 Royal® in Q4 2023 with more details to follow.

I want to buy Royal on Switch for portability and to not hog the TV and to sneakily play it while kids are watching something BUT it’s £55! And I could get it for free on Game Pass! And what if the text is really tiny when it’s not docked! I don’t know what to do! I’m sure there’ll be loads of comparisons done when it’s out but I want to order it already.
