The remaster portal has a "※DL版のみ" (DL version only) note underneath 4G and 3P - although the portal hasn't been updated with the Switch info. My guess is that 5R will get a physical release on everything whilst the others end up being downloads.

 

Also, if you care about my opinion, 4 is the best due to masterful pacing throughout where the others might drag in places or (in the case of 3's Tartarus grind) feel a little samey. But 5 sacrifices pacing for awesome elaborate crafted dungeons and a ton of polish elsewhere, whilst 3 has some of the best atmosphere and theming (if you're ignoring 1 & 2.)

Yeah, I'd agree with that assessment. For me 3's the strongest in terms of writing and atmosphere, but weakest mechanically and a bit stretched; 5's the strongest in terms of combat and dungeons (and snazzy UI), but weakest in terms of writing and characters and very bloated; 4 is basically the happy medium, and pleasingly tight pacing-wise.*

 

All three share the "best soundtrack in games" award, obviously.

 

*though, depressingly, if anything the series becomes increasingly worse as far as "making homophobic jokes and leching on its teenage cast" metrics go. So that's a thing to be aware of.

Said before 3 is my favourite. Though I've not replayed it since 2017, I had a promo copy of the PS2 version a few weeks before release and was telling everyone who would listen that it was excellent, people who'd played SMT Lucifer's Call were interested (because Persona was still SMT:Persona 3 then) but everyone else was like "looks like an anime dating sim".

 

Do I need a fourth copy of 3? No, do I want it on Switch? Yas! 3rd copy of Persona 4? Sure oh and I might actually get round to playing 5R on Switch as it's just sat on a shelf (next to 5 Vanilla, which I did finish).

 

Though they ought to include OG Persons 3 for Marin Fucking Karin shits n giggles, coz I'd love to see the internet's reaction to that now

Add me in to those who could have sworn direct commands were available in P3 and FES. What a Mandala effect moment. I even dug my PS2 copy of FES off the shelf and checked the manual lol.

 

It still has the original launch/pre-order receipt from Play.com inside...£17.99 brand-new. Wish I'd ordered multiple copies given how I saw used/opened ones pushing close to the £200 mark on ebay last I checked...

 

Anyway, I completed all of the versions. Bought the OG P3 on release (back in the PS2's twilight days when most people didn't care and GAME had about 2 copies in) and ploughed a lot of time into it. Then did it all again with FES. Finally, I bought the Ghostlight CE of P3P for the PSP (sold that one when it became stupid money on ebay) and did it all again for a third time. Hundreds and hundreds of hours spent but it was worth it. I'd say that Portable is the best purely for direct command in battles but FES is probably my favourite for The Answer (the battle against your allies and the accompanying "Heartful Cry" soundtrack is worth it alone) and because I kinda preferred being able to manually walk around in locations as opposed to P3P's fast travel-esque approach.

 

I also still have the Persona 3 soundtrack CD somewhere in one of my drawers. Annoyingly, there were separate CD's for FES and Portable due to each one having some exclusive tracks.

 

For some reason though, I didn't play any sequels beyond that, other than P4 Arena Ultimax spin-off. I still have the PS2 Persona 4 that I bought on release and never played!

 

Sadly I don't have the time to invest hundreds of hours in engrossing RPGs anymore so I can't see myself going back for a fourth tour of P3, or even getting around to the others. I'd like to think I could at some point but...

The only one I’ve played is P4G on vita. That was a glorious 100 hours spent back in 2014. Been waiting for a portable P5 ever since. Never played P3P. Should have got it when I had the vita really.

 

Still by the time I’ve finished grandia 2, Torna and then XC3, it’ll just the right time for P5R release. 
 

and that’s my gaming plan for the rest of 2022.

Has anyone seen any info about whether Persona 4 Golden will let you share your save data from the Vita and whether P5R will have an upgrade for PS4 owners?

 

I tried googling anything about save files, trophies, stuff like that but it all seems light on info. I don't care about trophies that much but if they were the same, it'd be a good indicator that save data should be compatible across platforms.

 

Otherwise I don't know if I can be fucked starting from scratch on both when I already plan on getting them all on Switch...

It's been updated a bit, with Switch added to the list of formats. It still says that 4G and 3P are download-only; 5R will be download-only for Xbox and PC, so we can assume a physical release for PS5 and Switch. I'll try and update the OP with some of this (as well as P5R's release date.)

To try and cover for my mistake I'd definitely recommend playing as the feMC on P3P just for the new music.

I’m about 50 hours into PSP P3 and I haven’t loaded it up in months; I think it became a bit boring. Mind you, I left a two year gap between the first 4/5 of PS2 P4 and actually finishing it so I think just not good at persevering with RPGs.

 

They should make more of the rhythm games.

I’m finally playing Persona 5 Royal (my first Persona!) and am horrified to learn that Japanese kids have to go to school on a Saturday 😫 I was looking forward to some Bucky tanning in the park side activities whenever the calendar ticked to Saturday, but no, I’m on the train to school in my school uniform again 🤢

Oh, actually, I just remembered. I recently somehow managed to battle my way through the first dungeon of Revelations: Persona on the PS1 Classic Mini before being annihilated by the most horrific and cumbersome city map I’ve ever had to navigate. So technically P5:R is the second one I’ve played.

Both Teddie and Morgana are annoying. Morgana is less annoying in Royal because he doesn’t stop you going out in the evening early in the game like he did in the vanilla release but for me they are both the worst party members in each game.

I will probably be in a minority here, but I thought Ken was really annoying in Persona 3. It was like, I enjoyed the group of characters as they were before he shows up. I think it's his voice actor - I just didn't like him.

3 is my favourite but there are still annoying characters. Never liked Ken, and Junpei is a whining teenager. But characters are fleshed better back stories than in 4 and 5. Yukari and misturi especially
