Royal adds a lot. QoL stuff, so you can start going out more from the start but the big thing is the extra term added on and the new confidants. It's adding a new story to the game really. Plus fluff like finishers etc which are pretty fun.

I played P5 twice to get the platinum, but absolutely loved playing through Royal. It's the definitive version as far as I am concerned. BUT I'm a huge Persona nerd so my view may be biased.

I was quite late to the party when it comes to this franchise and only started playing P5 (original PS4 release) last year. I loved it. But now that the Royal version is coming to Game Pass, I was wondering if it's different enough from the vanilla version to play through again, or is it just some added fluff?

More streamlined, more to do outside of dungeons, extra story arc and new secret boss. Also you have to beat the Reaper legit, the flu trick doesn't work any more.

You can platinum the game in 1 playthrough if you know what you're doing but there's "more" for a second playthrough to do.

Most of the extra story content will come after the vanilla ending.

The gamepass version has all the dlc as well, and there are some nice bits in there. There are battles with specific challenges, so only use this kind of attack, win within x number of moves etc and they can be fun. Got the platinum on my first run, but dip in on a second run every now and again for the extra bits and bobs

Ah nice, I never bothered with the DLC for Royal so that's a good incentive (like I needed one) to start a new playthrough.

Fuck that boss fight though, hope they rebalance it for the new releases.

I did the secret boss in 5 vanilla, though it was a pain, needed it for the platinum.

Royal has 3 secret bosses, done the first one that you can access on the first playthrough, not got access to the other 2 on NG+ yet

All these secret bosses, is it possible to figure out how to find them/initiate the fight without using a guide?

Yep, you should come across them, but looking at a guide won't spoil too much

The only think you want to look up is making sure you trigger the extra content. There are 3 social links you have to max out by a certain date, but you have tons of time to do it.

There are some notes about the social links and the dates in the OP of the P5 thread (the bit about new semester conditions.)

P3 and P4 have some endings gated behind decisions but generally they're isolated events on one or two particular days. The only thing you need to worry about as a long-term goal is completing Marie's S.Link in P4, as she has a chunk of content that depends on its completion.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just started a playthrough of P4G again on Steam Deck, aiming for a couple of hours a week. Now... Is it feasible to play all three at the same time? For example.

Monday bedtime: 1-2 hours P4G

Tuesday bedtime: 1-2 hours P3P

Wednesday bedtime: 1-2 hours P5G

I sort of want to treat them like watching a series once or twice a week.

It should be fine because there's so much that's nice and self-contained (dealing with events one day at a time, generous checkpointing in dungeons). The only thing I'd be wary of is how you keep track of your "goals" in each game - so that when you jump back into, say, P5, you'll recall that you were in the middle of working on Kasumi's confidant, or boosting a particular stat, or whatever. I'm trying a P3P replay at the moment and I have a mental note about the next Tartarus boss being way too much for me until I've gained more levels, so I have ongoing goals for one game. :D

I wouldn't simply because there are already enough social links to keep track of in one game to manage 3 sets plus all the other calendar sensitive events.

Persona 3 isn't that long. I completed the FES version of the main story mode in around 60 hours and with the visual novel design of Portable you could probably finish it faster because you can quick travel everywhere so don't have to waste time wandering around the locations and being able to control your teammates helps to speed up the battles as well. P3P also has no additional content added to the storyline like Golden or Royal that will extend the playtime.

Though it does have two characters to play as, with some adjustments to social links depending on them, so encourages playing through twice in a way the others don't. It's also definitely the trickiest of the three games in terms of dungeoneering and in terms of social interactions, which might draw it out a little longer if you struggle with it. Though at least being P3P rather than original/FES means no kamikaze party AI to contend with!

HLTB says that there's not a lot between 3P and 4G (66 and 68½ hrs respectively.) I think 3P feels longer in my head because Tartarus seems like it goes on forever!

And both variations of 5 are enormous, even when you're replaying and have knowledge from a previous completion. I grumble about 5 a bit, but I can't complain about just how much videogame there is. :D

Ace news. I'm all for great games being released on as many things possible, but it was impossible to escape the port-begging over the last five years if you just wanted to read a tweet from Atlus, so at least people can fucking chill ;) Hopefully this bodes well for 6 and I won't be fretting about which console I need to own. Although for all we know it'll be another cross-gen project.

Wait until these people finally figure out that Shin Megami Tensei IV was the GOAT all along, and it's stuck on the 3DS

Edit: poll'd - Steam Version for P4G and P5R, and probably the PSP version of P3P and The Answer on PS2 via emulator.

For full disclosure, I've already played through P4 and P5 on PS2 and PS4 respectively, and P4G on Vita. I bought FES on PS2, but I didn't get very far.

And I'll be playing the 3DS version of SMT IV. Maybe Citra if I can figure out the homebrew stuff 8-)

Persona 3 - I have owned the PS2 original since release, and only played an hour. I think I would rather play FES so probably buying the PS3 digital version soon.

Persona 4 - played Vita version on a VitaTV and loved it - won't be replaying any time soon because it took me over a year!

Persona 5 - Own and haven't yet played both PS4 versions so probably shouldn't buy it again.

Yeah I know I have a problem.

Direct fodder, surely. P3P and P4G at least. Atlus will probably do something stupid like a port of P5 vanilla.

For the very first time Atlus didn't do something brain dead so I'm expecting something brain dead to be revealed later like no JP dub or something.

P4G on Switch  for me! I'm really looking forward to finally playing it, been putting off playing the game forever for the G version to come to a platform I own so this is a huge thing for me.
