The Jeff Gerstmann Thread

Agh, Jesus. Jeff's a careful bastard as well, you heard him talking about still wearing masks in supermarkets after the restriction was lifted. Hope it wasn't the workmen in his house.

I haven't actually listened to it too much though. I find non-gaming podcasts better for relaxing with these days as I'm simply too set in my own opinions.

Anyone still listening?  It doesn’t seem to have progressed from Jeff monologuing despite being 4 months in.

Listened to about half of them, they’re great for when I’m pottering around the house.

Think his more varied stuff is all on Patreon, but I’m content with the free podcast with ads.

It's kinda nice to listen to it but it doesn't really have much actual content.

Aye, it's definitely one to have on when you're washing up, or even playing a relaxing game that's not too involved. It can be a bit unengaging at times, the chat fades into the background until a keyword catches your interest.

I think early on he said I've got all sorts of ideas and want to get people on. Since then, I think he's basically got a couple of the most boring people on the planet on but the format remains Man And Twitch Chat. He also has some people paying a higher Patreon tier to be part of some focus group, which seems like a good way to ensure you only have people who think the sun shines out of your arse give you feedback.

I always thought the idea was for him to have guests on occasionally? Could have sworn that was mentioned when he first kicked it off.  Just him on the podcast is not very exciting.  All one pace, one tone.   I think 3 or 4 people is the sweet spot for a podcast.

Yes, it's a bit of a shame that he's not done a few things in a more structured way. For example I was really looking forward to his Hall of Fame thing, which sounded like it would be him doing little videos about games that have been his favourites or had interesting histories or were formative gaming experiences for him. I assumed that would be a sort of half-hour long, edited footage with him talking over it about the story behind the game, or why the game means a lot to him etc - but it's just been him sticking cheats on and playing them in an emulator for an hour and a half while he sort of half-talks to his Twitch chat.

I thought I'd watch a lot more of his stuff but I find myself watching less and less. I was the same with the Nextlander lot though, so maybe the heyday of Giant Bomb really was just lightning in a bottle.

My main game podcasts are now either retro related or have a theme every week (Back Page Pod). Although I like what Jeff's doing, the act of here's what I've been playing, news and the emails is a little too blah for me to tune in every week.

Still better than the Bombcast though. I ended up listening to the Immortality chat on last week's one and it was painful. Jess and Grubb is death to me.

I’m on board the Jeff Gerstmann ship for the time being.  This little schooner with its singular Captain, knowledgeable of the videogaming sea and sailing in whatever direction it wishes.  Maybe someday that’ll grow old and I’ll want a new ship with a new leader, but until then, onwards Captain Gerstmann.

Any highlights in the last podcast or two that you liked?

I struggle with just Jeff on his own so have started missing posdcasts.  Reel me back in peeps.

Next episode will feature Dave Snider if that helps. Jeff also mentioned in the last podcast he talked to a lot of people and all said yes but it's just a matter of scheduling them in.

It's just Jeff and the back page for me now. The last Giant Bombcast started with them not wanting to talk about games! So I'm done with them.

I saw Greg Miller show up on the WWE Network the other night so I immediately cancelled my sub. He is the absolute worst.

Hopefully Jeff can bring Danny on board somehow. although solo Jeff is great. What happened to Danny? He was on the Bombcast and then just vanished.

He started talking about how he used to be scared of electronic music until the Streets of Rage 2 and Wipeout soundtracks made it all make sense for him, in the most recent podcast I heard. It was a great listen, going on detours to Paul’s Boutique by the Beastie Boys, just talking about music of that era and the type of shite that dickheads in his school were listening to instead. Was great stuff.

Mentioned a couple of posts up, but the chat about video game music which was inspired by this article in The Guardian was really interesting, and it was kinda awesome to hear Jeff declare a late found love and obsession with The KLF.

Brilliant, got both of those to come. Popped in to echo the above positives about the musical discussion; really interesting listen, and nice to hear Jeff vibing on things he clearly enjoys, and at his own pace.

Having the live chat open when he records also gives the shows opens up potential for some fun tangents (more so than if it was just him and a mic for three hours)

The podcast today has a few tantalising hints to Jeff having... issues with previous engagements. He hints at having named his new gig something that might have been poking the bear and changing his mind due to lawyers and also just not wanting to be associated with the thing the name was spoofing. Could be that he picked a name of something that has historical baggage but it does seem to lean more towards him not wanting any association with his prior work, which he seems to have some distaste for for unspecified reasons.
