The Jeff Gerstmann Thread

You just need a (free) account and you can 'follow' Jeff. If you have the mobile app you can get notifications when he goes live. There is a schedule but I have never seen a streamer fill it in!

You need to be a patreon to get access to his discord, he seems to post a schedule there.

Also on Patreon he has posted his times...

Hey y'all! Just firming up some plans over and wanted to let everyone know when the next streams will be. All times are Pacific Daylight Time because math is hard.

June 9, 11AM - Summer Game Fest
June 12, 10AM - Xbox Bethesda Thing
June 12, 12:30PM - PC Gaming Show
June 13, 3PM - Capcom Showcase
June 14, Time TBA - Our Weekly Podcast!

It'll be on Twitch! https://twitch.tv/jeffgerstmann/

The Capcom show is 11:00 PM BST (I think!)

People use the internet without adblock?

It's less relevant in this situation but for 'permanent' information it's madness. You have to go onto discord to find out something about, say a mod you want to install. A grumpy admin tells you to search the chat for help. Which doesn't work, then you get told off for asking again. Or going into the wrong section. So you give up.

We had that problem solved before technology that died out 20 years ago suddenly became popular again. Sticky topics in forums exist, people!

THIS THIS THIS.

I've been offered ads on MHG and I refuse to take them. I can't afford to run the site at the best of times, but I won't be taking ad revenue, it ruins the experience.

Edit:

Spoiler

Some might say that our content ruins the experience too

The use of Discord for everything seems to reflect the way gaming and esports have embraced some form of ADHD like information distribution. Everything on Discord, Twitter, Twitch and the like. So much of it lacks permeance or accessibility and very often requires you to watch rather than read.

I hate ads as much as the next person but I hate having to do anything other than read a short summary of announcements, dates, schedules or whatever just as much. "Join the discord" or "Like and subscribe" make me sigh.

Sorry to keep this off topic but whilst I understand the value of Discord I find if you're on more than a few servers it's impossible to keep up or fully immerse yourself in that community, and if you do manage to do that other servers will naturally get ignored. It's a nightmare if you have notifications on too. I have to unfollow every server otherwise it's constant pinging, and then you miss announcements.

I'm glad Jeff has made his Patreon-only though as it means the people there will make the effort to maintain an actual community.

I'm a member of a number of discord servers but I've only managed to feel like a member of a community on a very small amount of them. There's a private one some friends and I run, COMICSERA from Resetera (A really, really nice place full of great folk) and surprisingly a channel about birbs and cats on the Skatebird discord.

Most of the others are for specific pieces of software I use and I don't need to interact with very much. I'm a member of Jeff's but I can't really see me using it much.

Nitpicking here but if running a podcast series maybe choose a better mic (with less compression)?

He uses an SM7B, which is a plenty good mic. Not sure what post processing he's doing. Sounds fine to me - clear and intelligible. I find podcasts that try to maintain loads of dynamic range (hello BBC Radio 4 internet stream) can be hard to get loud enough, especially if you're in a car or on earbuds in a busy environment.

I dont know anything about twitch to be honest but what do I do to keep up with what he is doing? Do I need Amazon Prime for that or is there a cheaper way? I know there is a patreon but if I sign up to that do I need to then sign up to twitch also to not get ads on his streams?

If you've got Amazon Prime you get one free sub per month. If you use that on JGs channel, you'll get no ads.

That Rick and Morty type thing has the guys from red letter media in it, bizarrely.

RLM did a very NSFW vid for the Trover Saves the Universe game that Rick & Morty’s Justin Roiland co-created (he also founded Squanch Games)

The vid is age restricted but still on YouTube (search George Foreskin Grill if you really want)

Update/expand your filter lists.

You're going to need to be more specific. As of at least a few months ago you needed extra addins to stop Twitch running ads whenever the fuck they felt like it.

Do they stop the ads from when people redeem them? Some streamers tie ads to their channel points so they get some revenue, and I thought and blockers only 'know' about the ones at the beginning like with YouTube.

In the past Ublock origin definitely hasn't been able to even stop the ads at the beginning (Like it can with Youtube). You had to use an addon that used the quirk that let you force the feed down to 480p instead of the ad playing (and then back to normal when it was done). That might have changed recently. I was using Twitch so much I just paid for their ad free version (Same as I do with youtube).

If you sub to an individual streamer you don't get ads at all I think but I'm not sure what happens if the streamer chooses to run one at a specific time.

Whenever ublock fails (mainly with YT), I just refresh my filters and it starts working again. I almost never watch Twitch but haven't seen a single ad. I gave Jeff a Prime sub but no ads on GB, either (or any other channel I've tried).

Youtube is almost never a problem with Ublock Origin I agree but Twitch as far as I'm aware definitely gets around it. There was a period a little while ago where they were super aggressive with the midroll ads and browsing feeds was a nightmare with upfront ads.
