Cyberpunk: Edgerunners tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology- and body-modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.

Watched the first 2 epsiodes and thought they were great. Little clunky in the dialogue at times, but the animation is fantastic, really crisp and vibrant. The aesthetics and violence really reminds me 80s and 90s Manga.

Already in 2 epsiodes I feel like Night City and the modding culture is more realised than the game ever represented. I guess the freedom with animation is they can do anything they want as there's no limits.

Looking forward to watching the rest.

I just watched the first episode of this.

Basically: wow.

I haven't watched an anime in a while, or any animated series for that matter, that establishes such a fully fleshed out world so well and so quickly.

It was also really very well written and surprisingly emotional.

What is this madness.

The first episode of this was really good - amazing animation, and a decent hook for the story. The fidelity to the game is simultaneously quite impressive and very distracting - I think almost every location was an actual place in the game, which I found took me out of the story a bit. I watched an episode of Sandman just before, and in that they make heavy use of one particular street in Canary Wharf which doubles for multiple locations. I found that very distracting because I used to work on that street, so imagine the levels of distraction when one part of my brain keeps going “oh, you know that place” and another part of my brain registers it as a videogame environment.

Unfortunately the first half is the strongest.

Spoiler

After the botched job with "Maine" I think is his name, the rest of it actually is a mess and the story just goes nowhere into a really unsatisfying conclusion.

I think overall it's actually pretty weak. Pity really, as those first couple of episodes were so stylish and confident. Typical anime series then.

Watched the first half this evening. My expectations weren't high, based on it being a Netflix anime and a licensed tie-in.

They've... actually pulled it off though?! Obviously having spent way longer than is healthy in Night City I'm going to be biased. But the characters are interesting, the action is wild and it actually has a few fresh ideas rather than slavishly rehashing stuff from the game and TTRPGs.

Loved the little

Spoiler

Rogue

cameo in the montage sequence too.

Worried about the second half having read the above but you guys have some of the worst opinions of all time so not counting it out just yet. ;)

Edit: Watched the second half. More downbeat and action-heavy than the breezy world-introducing opening, still good. The ending is not exactly unexpected but beautifully done. A shame that it seems extremely unlikely they'll do any more, but 4 hours of this version of NC is a decent amount.

As others have said, it's got a very strong start.

Spoiler

The way David gets pulled into the gang and how he feels the need to live out the dreams of his mother and mentor are really well conveyed. I'm a fan of the game so it was lovely to see all the locations used. Also like the way the handled the Cyber Psycho element of the story, the addictive nature of chroming the fuck up. But once a couple of the key characters fade away and David got hench it certainly lost some of its appeal. I preferred him when he sounded like Jesse from Breaking Bad.

That said, at times the animation is amazing, I love the use of the neon lighting on the characters. I'll probably rewatch it at some point with the Japanese voice acting.
