well now i've just watched this piss of shite.

oh no hang on it was pretty damn special. it's a comic book movie, literally. The Nautlilus in Vienna highlights this very fact, sure it makes no sense but then you obviously have never read a comic book. It's just balls out nuts without ever trying to take itself to seriously.

People who complain about the sub but then go on about how good the matrix's story is or how amazing anime is are dumb as they're just as far fetched.

So i reccomend it, it's a little bit different from most comic book movies in that it is still 'out there'. An enjoyable waste of 1hr40min.

Some people go on as if it's as bad as xXx.

Beertiger, you do well to observe the truth mired in the prejudices of others...

I thought it was pretty darned good. It's actually rather impressive how the fantastitical characters are handled in a semi-realistic way. No film can ever compare to the comic version, just the same as no film can compare to the book. Just think of them as works in their own right.

Yes, the characters roles were switched, and one was added. But what's wrong with that?

And how many people have actually seen the bloody Nautilus on this forum? I missed it when it visited Chatham dockyard.

I watched it twice in the space of two days, because my missus missed it the first time. I thougth it was enjoyable, with good cinematography, good set design, reasonably well acted by the ensemble cast, and had enough narrative drive to keep it going.

Christ, if you want a dodgy comic spin-off, can i recommend the Swamp Thing movie with Heather Locklear?

  • 4 weeks later...

Watched it last night and thought it was pretty entertaining (in a popcorn kinda way). Could it have been better? Definately. But was it shite? Nope.

Those who are dissing it; is it because you thought it was a crap film, or because it didn't do justice to the graphic novels? Just curious as I've never read them but can understand how this could cause prejudice (being a Stephen King fan who decries pretty much every attemp to film one of his horror stories - although his non-horror stuff generally turns out aces - probably because they realise that his stories are about the characters and not just the juicy supernatural aspects).

One of the worst films I've ever seen. From the start with that cliched English fop in the club through the tedious character introductions to the ridiculous Jekyll & Hyde character to the b-o-r-i-n-g Venice sequence to the LUDICROUS shoehorning in of Moriarty. A film utterly without merit.

That's about right.

I'm annoyed I didn't walk out of the cinema.

well there's your problem, the film was sposed to be ludicrous and over the top. if you don't like that sort of stuff then you won't like the film.

still a pretty good comic book film.

Why oh why oh why did they make Mina Harker still a vampire? that was totally ridiculous, everyone knows mina harker gets cured of being a vampire.

I liked the bit about Africa not letting Quartermain die though. i don't get the link between this film and the comics. Dorian grey is pictured prominently on the cover of the first graphic novel, but doesn't feature in it at all, yet here he is as one of the main characters in the film. why oh why oh why?

Boring?

The fight scenes, character interaction etc made it far from boring....

Messy? Nah....listen to the director's commentary and it might make you realise how much of it had to be tied in to what appeared to me a fairly realistic interpretation of a fantastical world. Things like Tom Sawyer being introduced etc, the design of the Nautilus etc....

Why should I have to listen to a commentary to tell me why a film's good? Come to that, why should I know the comics to enjoy it? It didn't work as a standalone movie, unlike Xmen or SpiderMan, so it's a failure as far as I'm concerned.

see i don't really like Spiderman but i'm not gonna go around telling people it's shit because that might put people off drom watching it and i know that i'm in the minorty.

i don't know why i liked LXG so much, the action scenes were decent and the story was balls out nonsense and the design work was marvelous.

Mr Hyde was an ace character not any less believable than a man with an indestructable skelteton or a boy who was bitten by a radioactive spider and given the ability to shoot goo. don't even get me started on people like Iceman, Storm or Hellboy.

you can't have select supsended disbelief.

You suspend your belief when the film charms you... perhaps.

Spiderman was a poor film and so was the x-men film. The special effects were ok, the acting was passable - perhaps the problem is the childish morality that underpins these films - which was probably key in making us interested when we first encountered the characters.
