Resident Evil 4 REmake - March 24th 2023 - real gamers play on Hardcore ;)

Found a Vid on YouTube of someone clearing out the Valley. It plays absolutely nothing like it played out on my game. It’s a constant barrage of enemies that goes on and on just like in the original.

It seems like, maybe because he’s running around constantly he’s hitting areas/checkpoints that tell the game to spawn in more enemies. However, if you stay in one area and fully take one wave out. Then that wave ends and the next isn’t triggered and spawned in until you walk over a certain section of floor and you then see the other enemies just appear out of thin air because you’re not busy running around distracted. I don’t know much about how games work but I’m pretty sure I’ve never encountered anything that rudimentary in such a big AAA game, or even in an indie game for that matter. Only way I can explain what’s happening on certain sections though. Surely someone else is seeing this? If anyone wants to give it a go that would be cool just to find out if that 100% is what’s happening.

Is there a way I can start a new game on Normal but still keep my Hardcore playthrough to check it myself?

All of those interactions are in the remake as well though. The only interaction from RE4 OG which seems missing here to me are door ones, like kicking in doors and shooting through them. Shooting through doors is an interaction I really miss tbh. When you know the fuckers are on the other side, it would be nice to shoot them.

But I think the action in this is really good. It's more interactive than RE4 OG I think, cause of the melee and dodge system. Sometimes though you can find yourself in a situation where you just have to sit still and eat a shit sandwich I think, and hit reload.

The way I see it, in RE4 you avoid getting trapped in the corner. But in Re4 remake you are going to eventually end up trapped in the corner and you need to account for that, even as you try to avoid it. That's where the new mechanics come in, and the weapon switching lends itself to that flow also.

Chapter 5 is pretty mean on hardcore

Spoiler

I've only just got into the routine of ducking other these hammer fuckers.

I had a feeling with the remake that the punisher handgun would be a lot better, cause now you can strafe to line the shots up for piercing. It was also good like that in the VR version.

To be fair, I’ve stuck the Remake on my GF’s profile and blasted through on normal. It’s fucking amazing when it’s not doing the bollocks spawning stuff. They both have pluses and minuses.

This Remake IS fucked in places and is disgustingly filthy and cheap. Got back to the Valley on normal. Took out everyone by going into the building and shooting out of the window. Once again, the music dies down. I exit the building, walk to a specific spot and.......lBOSH......enemies spawn in. If you’re facing in a certain direction you literally see them appear out of thin air. Anyone wants to see this shite. Clear out the first wave. Then head to the far left corner of the area, where you go up the slope. Face into the area, walk backwards and you will see all the enemies just spawn in out of thin air all around you Basically, there are a number of spawn points, in that area, when you cross them enemies materialise out of nowhere. If you run around and trigger them whilst distracted you might not notice (I still did though). It’s fucking proper rubbish. Definitely not 2023 AAA game stuff. It’s not even 2003 B-Rank games stuff.

Unfortunately, it looks like that approach is used throughout the game in a number of places. As soon as it kicks in it spoils the game for me as it’s immediately totally obvious and stands out like all fuck. Enemies spawning behind you in rooms you’ve just walked out of or dead end corridors you’ve just come out of and it does it multiple times each encounter, possibly numerous times when you cross the spawn points.

Can also confirm that there’s not too much difference at all between Normal and Hardcore difficulty. Chainsaw dude encounter lasted longer and was harder on normal!?!? Everything else seems pretty much the same to me. Maybe more items scattered about? Not sure.

I might have to restart on normal too - I've played the absolute crap out of this game over the years so I chose hardcore thinking I was Billy Badass - but dammit if I died about 8 times on the very first village siege last night. There are so many more enemies, and the chainsaw dude is practically indestructible. On the original you could let him charge at you while you held your shotgun on him saying to yourself "that's it, come to me you m*****f****r"!

On this remake, if you do that you are screaming in terror and getting cut in half. 😆

On that bit I’ve always just ran around the buildings in circles. I died on Normal, Chainsaw Dude was about 2inches off my arse wherever I went, and it went on and on for ages. On Hardcore I only saw him in the cutscene and the section seemed to end really quickly.

Saw a cool bit where a bloke with explosives got blown in two, which was funny as fuck. Massive explosion of blood and gore! Proper brutal. Fav bit so far though, was probably when I shot a bloke and kicked him in the face and he fell backwards into a dude that had just made it up a ladder. Knocked that dude back down killing him and then slipped over the edge to his death himself. 🤣

Oh and the toilet bit. 😂

Turns out there were a few bits cut in the village but nothing major. The cut that most stood out to me was

Spoiler

The cable car section! Bit surprised they cut that but I suppose it was pretty short in reality. Just felt like a set-piece they could have run with a bit graphically.

The castle is much more its own thing, relative to the original game, compared to the village. I think I might prefer the castle to the village here which wasn't something I felt about the original. There's some familiar set-pieces in the castle here too of course but they've played a lot faster and looser with it and it's fresher/more novel to me as a result.

Never played an RE game before — I might have tried RE4 on the GC maybe but can’t really remember — and I was half tempted to give this a go, but the talk of difficulty is putting me off. How much more difficult than, say TLOU 1 and 2? Is there an easy mode?

Yeah there's an easy mode.

That's what I'm playing and having so much fun.

I usually run all difficulties but won't be going near hardcore until I unlock some beastly weapon with unlimited ammo.

If you play on Normal, at the Game Over screen you can change the difficulty down if need be as well.

I’m surprised at all the fuss about hardcore mode, my 12 and 14 year old kids are much better at games than me nowadays and I’m not struggling and making decent progress, end of chapter 6 now

Collecting every treasure and have a maxed out pistol and shotgun, lots of melee attacks and not bothering with any other guns

This is amazing. It’s amazing. It’s like a recomposition of a great symphony.

A delightful early discovery:

Spoiler

The snapped neck ganados that are absolute bullet sponges? The flash grenade Plagas insta-kill works on them!

I’m loving this. It’s so damn meaty. Melee kicking old hag villagers, blocking attacks, jumping out of windows, shoulder barging locks off doors - actions have such weight and purpose to them. The steady pace of running/limping around feels grounded and physical. The slight pull on the gun to get the aim to land on a headshot with the fantastic audio telling you you’re about to get attacked from behind. Just magical stuff.

Fucking jump scare, just damn near shat meself…

Spoiler

Surprise wardrobe guy in the village after bell has tolled and everyone has fucked off.

He clearly doesn’t like bingo.

Just in case anybody was panicking because I didn’t mention the difficulty. I’m on Normal, balance is just right for me.

…as you were.

Nice enemy deformation detail:

Spoiler

A dynamite chucker who was blown up and severed at the torso - hundreds of sinuey, writhing tendrils slithering away in the exposed orifice.

The game strikes a very good balance between weighty, considered movement, like 7 and 8, and quicker, game-like reflex actions, which puts it alongside 4.

I was quite impressed earlier when I did a spot of low stakes backtracking, noticed that all the corpses from earlier were still on the floor, in the same dismembered state, despite me shutting down the game in the interim!

Playing on SX, I feel the game looks far far better when you put it on performance mode, turn off CA, turn off ray tracing, turn off hair strands.

Gives it a much cleaner sharper look. Ray tracing in particular just muddies the visuals.

The best type of game complainer is always those who dive in above their skill levels and then complain it’s too unfair! They keep dying. Too many enemies. Gun’s too weak. Sections take too long.

Happens so much in here. It’s all over the Days Gone thread for example, so must be zombie-related. Play it on normal and get on with your life.

I can't pos this enough. Those posts trigger me so hard you could hook me up to the grid and power a small generator.

Start of chapter 2, and I just

Spoiler

slashed an enemy, who staggered backwards into a bear trap, allowing me to roundhouse kick his face off

Amazing. The combat feels very sophisticated and dynamic.

Had some excellent moments during the first couple of hours last night, I think my favourite was when I booted a guy down off a ledge and his body took out an axe that had been flung at me from nearby!  Epic.

Upgrading ammo capacity doesn't give you a free reload :quote:

I abused that Miss so much in the original - especially with the high power weapons.

I'm glad they seem to have resisted the urge to have Ashley and Leon banter, crack jokes and comment on every single step of their journey in excruciating detail every 5 seconds.

This is great fun but I really need to find a FOV fix for aim down sight. Sat two feet away from an ultrawide it's like shooting through a postage stamp. Granted it's survival horror, but it's too much. Leon's slightly drunken queasy walking seems to have carried over from the demo though. There's something not quite right about his movement that I can't put my finger on.

Other than that, top stuff so far.

Proudly playing on Assisted.

With the auto aim snap on.

I don't care.

but my word this is great. The sound through my ancient 5.1 system is incredible, the atmosphere totally makes the game.  It does feel much more like the same game again, where the remakes of 2 and 3 were transformative, but it doesn't matter because it was always such a good game.  Someone said earlier it's like great music remastered as a symphony, so to make my own tortured analogy it's like a Wetherspoons breakfast when you're hungover, but they put an extra sausage on by mistake and they let you keep it because it's their error and there's a new girl in the kitchen and they don't want to bollock her on her first day and it's only a sausage but now it belongs to you and you can eat it with impunity, they admit their error and you didn't have to do any work for it, it's just there and what a beauty, that sausage, mmmmm.

Incidentally speaking of aim, there seems to be a bug where field of view setting impacts weapon spread. I'm seeing about a third of my pistol shots not hit the target even though the entire target is inside the crosshair - it's very annoying.
