Definitely going to wait for the honeymoon period to be over before going in at full price. That EDGE 8 has got me worried. If this is only as good as the latest Horizon game, something must have gone very wrong.

What about the four hundred 9s and 10s? Edge isn’t special.

And I’ve had more fun in two hours than I did with Horizon, for what it’s worth.

Stayed up until 2am last night playing this which is always a good sign. The sound design is so effective that at one point while solving a puzzle I kept breaking away from it because I was convinced an enemy was approaching.

Thought Del Lago was a bit disappointing though

Spoiler

Those wave effects....all I could think about during the fight was how poor the water looked. It might be rose tinted glasses but I remember the fight being a bit more exciting in the original. It was always pretty easy and more style over substance but I'm sure dodging the branches in the water used to be harder? Certainly I can recall swimming back to the boat a lot from the GC version  Am I misremembering? It felt like there was barely any threat at all in this remake version.

Played a little this morning and my god Hardcore mode is tough! I finished the demo without issue but have died three times in the village on the higher difficulty.

Totally agree. I still enjoyed it, but felt like it was on the top of some Jelly that had not set properly. Also aye the piles of floating branches in OG had to be dodged where in this I did not have too once.

Yeah I started on Hardcore as it recommended it to people who had played Resi 4 before but I ended up restarting on normal fairly early on.

I will definitely give the higher difficulties a crack on subsequent playthroughs but I don't want my first play to be characterised by endlessly repeating certain encounters, I want a nice flow to begin with.

Dunno how much I care about the opinion of sites like Digital Chumps, Gfinity and Finger Guns. An EDGE 8 says a lot more to me than a 10 from them.

Look to Youtubers instead? Even some of the harsher critics on the youtubes have been blown away by it. I mean it is your money buddy and if you are not in a rush I totally understand, but an 8 is not bad. I am still shocked they gave Horizon an 8 to be honest. It really felt like just another checklist open world and the story was uninspired, but that might just be me.

Everyone knows that the videogame score scale runs 8-10. The Resi 4 Remake is amongst the absolute worst games ever made. Remade, in fact. Or no, wait, that's not right, that would imply the first one was terrible, but it wasn't. I was right the first time.

In a few months Edge will probably say that it should have been a 10, just like the original should have been. Maybe they should re-review it when the Mercenaries drops because that mode alone is better than 90% of action games on the market

I’m playing the OG ver on Switch atm and finished that fight earlier this week. I didn’t have to dodge a single pile of branches. Maybe it just depends on where you trigger the fight?

You’ve got to remember the Edge scale has a specific meaning attached to each number:

7: Beloved classic

8: Genre-reframing masterpiece

9: An 8 that causes arguments

10: An 8 that causes friendship-destroying internicene warfare.

An EDGE 6 has also been touted as landing somewhere between an 8 or 9 for the right game - personally I've always trusted a strong EDGE 6 a lot more than a middling 8. You know where you are with a good EDGE 6. Solid score. An 8 is just non-committal, boring.

This is a RE4 re-imagining. Why care about if it's exactly like the original or very different? Both are available for anyone to play. Enjoy this game on its own terms - it's obviously a very good game.

It's going to be exactly like the thread for The Last of Us TV adaptation. The original is so beloved and engrained in people's memories that it's impossible to not constantly make comparisons between the two versions. I wouldn't get annoyed about it, I think it's natural to be a bit disappointed if you feel like a part you loved in the original has been downgraded. Equally there are some parts that have been remixed in a really fun or surprising way. Just embrace the inevitable endless discourse about whether this version of the set-piece was better than that version of the set-piece.

I already feel confident in declaring that this is a much better re-imagining of RE4 than TLOU HBO was of TLOU, lol

That said, I'm going to have to go with mouse and keyboard I think. Even with tweaks, the aiming feels so wrong to me on controller

What a brave statement comparing a game to a tv series, two different mediums which operate on different levels.

It’s pretty obvious that Edge printed the score sideways, what they meant was it scores infinity, because they loved it:

I like it when people get upset about scores on a game they haven’t played yet.

Indeed! I don’t even know what Edge is, I just pretend to so I can join in.

The bear traps can fuck off though.

This! Despite carefully looking out for them, I’ve somehow managed to step in pretty much every single one. Special mention goes to the ones I did avoid, mentally logged for later but then, ran straight into as soon as the Ganados turned up. 😂

I think the reason I thought the original was just good and not great was, I was a Resi superfan  and it felt like it strayed too far away from the Resi atmosphere and “feel” and survival horror. This somehow now feels like it’s got that Resi atmosphere and “feel” back. In the down time sections, I’m slowly walking through the environments, peeking around corners etc as it feels suitably tense. Really is reminding me of the GC Remake of 1. Where the missions in the original? They’ve been simple but fun so far.

Surprised to hear people are finding it tough. I’ve got loads of ammo, healing items, there’s loads to find tucked away, and the parry and dodge moves have very generous timings.

So far I’d say this is a 9 or 10. Feels like a HUGE AAA blockbuster with loads of content and tons of replay value. From the snippet I’ve read of the Edge review they seem to be making a big thing about how they played the original back in the day and that the original is better. Sounds a bit indier than thou. I played the original on release and so far this is Resi 4 but turned up to 11. It’s giving Metroid Prime Remastered a run for its money. Can’t give it any higher praise than that!
