Resident Evil 4 REmake - March 24th 2023 - real gamers play on Hardcore ;)

The VIIIage demo was especially bonkers in that you could only play it when the last moon of Autumn and the first sun of Winter appeared in the sky together simultaneously, and the player ensured that they had a 2p coin sellotaped to their left bicep while getting pegged by the horn of a unicorn, but only if the unicorn’s name was Chico. And never on Xbox.

I always remember going back and forth between Modern Warfare and Halo 3 and finding the frame rate differences very jarring. Halo 3 felt like wading through treacle. I’d always be ok with it after a few mins, though, and low frame rates were the norm.  Nowadays they’re the exception and just too noticeable for me. I guess ignorance is bliss for some.

It's not really ignorance, as I do check out the framerate modes. I just don't feel much of a difference, so it's shinies all the way for me!

Hopefully patches will sort these issues out although apparently the deadzone issue has been a historic one on xbox?

Yup, I've played the demo multiple times on both PS5 and Series X and neither are optimal unfortunately. PS5 is noticeably softer than Series X even after turning all the graphical filters and shit off. Series X has worse aiming because it has the exact same deadzone issues all the previous Resi games have had on the platform but somehow even worse this time.

I ended up cancelling my PS5 preorder and am waiting to see how it all pans out after the inevitable day one patches. But I have more faith in them improving the graphics in the final version on PS5 than fixing the deadzone issues which have plagued the Xbox versions of the franchise for years now. It's inexplicable why the Xbox versions keep controlling in this way.

I seriously wouldn’t buy the game on the strength of the demo - clunky and felt like you where controlling a motor home instead of a character. Didn’t even look that great either and the performance mode looked very low res. You think we would be beyond ‘press A to open door’, by now! I think these demos do more harm than good tbh.

I wasn't that impressed with it on the TV but when I looked at it more closely on a pc monitor there's a lot of detail in it, I think.

The hair strands stuff looks decent, but is buggy at low resolutions (Leon has a grid in his hair at 1440, but not 4k). My only real major visual complaint is I find it hard to set it up so it doesn't have lots of black crush. I hate calibrating brightness and stuff like that, I'm never sure if I'm making the image better or worse

I'm replaying RE2 remake on PC atm to get ready for this, playing with M&K. I want to play 4 on M&K too so figure I'd get the muscle memory down with the slower paced prequel first.

What platform?

On series X it is stunning even in performance mode.

Also that is cutscene only doors similar to other new Resis. The rest of the doors open with movement.

I’m playing Village on PS5 at the moment and that has the same issue. It’s obviously just a Capcom thing as I just can’t seem to fix it. You can alleviate it by turning in dynamic tone mapping bit that just makes it too bright.

PS5 definitely suffers more than XB but it’s there in both.

Oh man  that said I’m looking forward to reading and seeing people’s playthroughs on here. It’s great that videos like that can happen but this and the Metroid Prime thread made me realise how much I love this form of seeing people discuss a game and describe what they experienced. Also looking forward to hearing the TCGS take on it… must surely be a candidate for a streaming series.

PS5 - what are you supposed to do on the calibration screen that says something like 'make the blue and red bars the same size'? They already are!

Have you tried :-

An alternative hobby?

Can’t comprehend people playing this and getting hung up on it technically. The presentation is A+.

This means that it's set up correctly, however I generally find it's best to ignore and go for what you think looks good cause capcom's approach to HDR can be a bit weird

How would it look if it wasn't set up correctly? I don't get it. You click left or right, the bars increase in size on one side and decrease in size on the other. How would they not be the same size at the start for everyone?

Enjoyed the demo by the way. My knife broke though. Won't that get annoying in the final game? How do you fix/replace it? Breaking open barrels/crates will be a pain if you have to use ammo. (or can you punch? I didn't check).

I played through the demo once, enough to think it was great but not enough to be bored of that section when I play through it on release.

Well bully for you.

I’m enjoying the little secrets and stuff. The bonus difficulty is nice but the hidden weapon reminds me of the secret Nikita launcher in the Metal Gear Solid demo. God that takes me back.

The sign of a truly glorious game is the demo winds up getting more attention than some full games.
