It’s more the price for me. £60 for something by that isn’t totally new to me seems a bit steep, even something of RE4’s pedigree.

For the sake of accuracy it’s £54.99, at least on PlayStation it is anyway.

I'd argue it effectively *is* totally new, because it's riffing on something rather than playing the same tune.

I can't argue about price though, because the PC version can be had for £35...

I don’t regret spending £70 on demons souls or ffvii remake or tlou part 1 remake. I’m certainly not going to worry about spending £60 on a modern remake of one of the best games ever made

This. I’d also recommend buying more credit than you need - £84 credit costs £69.99, so a hefty 18% saving, and you’ll use it eventually.

I'm going to try and clear up the naming conventions of this shit once and for all:

Reboot: usually something that shares only the name and spirit of the original

XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Remake: a complete reimagining or reworking of a previous title into a new game

Resident Evil 4

Final Fantasy 7

Remaster: an old engine and/or mechanics placed 1 to 1 into a completely new graphics engine

The Last of Us Part 1

Demon's Souls

UpRes: an old game given quality of life things like higher resolutions and widescreen support or wrapped in an emulator but otherwise looking similar:

Quake

PowerSlave

Refurbishment: who knows what the fuck they did and didn't do

Metroid Prime (but really it's a Remaster)

I find it weird the amount of people in the thread going: "I've already played this". Erm, I mean, no, you literally haven't. Unless you mean you've seen the events in the story before, then sure. But everything else about how the game plays, how it feels, how it looks, how it's directed, is almost entirely new.

I could understand saying that about The Last of Us Part 1, or even Demon's Souls, as that's more or less 1 for 1 the same game with new visuals. Based on the demo though, this is not like that. And it's actively exploiting your knowledge of things you remember to do things a bit differently.

I think TLOU pt. 1 plays very differently with the tuned aiming and upgraded AI. Might seem like a small change but it makes a huge difference.

£57.98 on Xbox. I can leave it a while though, I’m in no rush.

Ducking under the wild lunges is particularly wild, I love it!

I didn't know they'd changed the AI. I guess it goes in the "Refurbishment" category then. An expensive one.

50 at Base and Hit. Which of these is the best bet for release day?

Same website, they’ve rebadged it you fool!

Edit - this is a Partridge joke that seemed apt in the moment, I’m not actually calling you a fool!

'exploiting your knowledge of things you remember to do things a bit differently' is a thing I really like in a RE remake. Reminds me of the way the dog jump scare works in RE1make

Spoiler

They don't jump through the window the first time through, they just crack the window a bit so you don't think it's going to happen. Then they throw it at you hours later to actually scare you all over again lol

Motion in this is making me feel a little odd, don’t normally suffer with that. Any tips for settings? I notice there is a reticle you can switch on which I’ll try but didn’t particularly want something on screen.

Or pay just over £30 if you wanna go the Turkey route.

Me too, but I thought only at first? There’s a weird perspective effect as you look up and down, which either went away or I got used to it.

There's a lens distortion effect you can turn off in the options ,must be that

Managed to get to the end of the demo after five or six attempts. That was so tense! Definitely found it tougher than the original. Need to get the hang of parrying and doing more melee kills. Spent the last minute or so just running around in circles as out of ammo, but had managed to kill the chainsaw guy at least.

This is a bit special isn’t it? Looks gorgeous and sometimes plays at 60 fps it looks like on the base PS4, the sound design is amazing (3D audio on headphones on old gen!) and they’ve kept so much of the feel of the original, even the wild camera angle for when Leon jumps out the window.

2023 is going to be a banner year for games at this rate.

Isn't it just. We already have Octopath Traveler II, Wo Long and Metroid Prime remastered. RE 4 REmake is just round the corner and after that we still have Advance Wars Re-boot Camp, Pikmin 4, SF VI, Elden Ring DLC and the new Zelda to look forward to. The last of the banner years maybe, as I think it'll take some doing to top it.

I was feeling quite down after this demo took me to a low place. I struggled far more than I felt I should. So, thank you, fellow oldies, for reminding me I'm in good company!

I actually don't think it's a question of age so much as knowledge of the original working against you. The original is very much about standing your ground until the last minute then pivoting to a new point of safety, standing your ground, pivoting to a new point of safety etc.

The remake is about parrying and constantly moving. Even though I know you can move and aim/shoot at the same time in the remake it's like my brain can't reprogram itself into accepting it's possible so I still end up pointlessly rooting myself to the spot.

I'm actually glad we get a couple of weeks on the demo before the full release because it means I should be able to go into the full game very comfortable with all the changes rather than struggling through it trying to play it like the original.

Parry is quite generous I find. You have a parry and a 'block', I think, and block uses more durability than parry (which might use none, actually). You can hold down l1 as long as you want to get the basic 'block' deflect but parry requires timing I think

Parry gives you a melee counter followup while block just stuns, I think. I could have this information wrong. I've not meticulously studied frame data or anything like that but I think this is the general gist. It adds a bit more of a balancing act to dealing with multiple enemies and they've increased the numbers to answer that increased range of options

The parry is pretty generous, though I keep pressing in the right stick to crouch instead of B when they lunge for a grab. Too many other games use that for crouch.

Great bit of fun is the parry winds up hacking off the arms of anyone who tries to punch you barehanded.

Also, I wish the damn Series X would stop dulling down HDR videos.

Rocksteady spends most of a decade slaving away on a game encapsulating all modern trends and has to delay it half a year because everyone pre-emptively loathes it, meanwhile two consecutive GameCube remakes show up and everyone is in love with them. Can’t quite get over it.
