Resident Evil 4 REmake - March 24th 2023 - real gamers play on Hardcore ;)

I hope they release more details about the VR mode soon. If it’s a standalone thing I’ll happily dive in and play RE4 Remake straight away, but if it’s the full game then I’ll wait. I’m sure players of RE7 and RE4 VR on Quest fekt the same, but in VR RE8 is so transformative it’s almost an entirely different medium.

I think it will be a stand alone thing as I’m not sure the quick turn aspect and getting mobbed will translate well into VR.

It works perfectly in VR - I actually played it with quick turn switched off on the Quest. I'm betting, given they've just said they've started development on this and are using the term 'VR Mode' instead of content, it's the full game coming later in the year. I'm not playing it on release as I think this is almost certainly what will happen.

Yeah that makes sense, and the fact that it’s free. Let’s be honest if it was new content they would most likely charge extra for it.

I can’t believe we spent a page discussing shit Resi games and nobody mentioned how awful 5 is. We’ve changed man.

 

Having replayed them recently, I had more fun with 6 than 0, CV or 5. 
 

However, if we’re discussing what should be remade in the style of these remakes next, the answer is obviously Dino Crisis.

I think they put out a statement before the State of Play saying they have just started work on the VR stuff so it'll be a while before they have anything ready to show.

My main takeaway from RE5 was that, after a few comments about causal racism towards Spaniards in Resident Evil 4, Capcom doubled down and went full Michael Caine in Zulu in the sequel.

The thing I didn’t like most in 5 was co-op. Resident Evil was, is and always should be a solitary experience.

Yeah 5 was pure 360 era co-op fun.

I think 5 is great. I only played up to that massive giant you fight in a jeep or something but I loved it.

Yeah there seems to be a pretty even split between people who played co-op and like it and people who tried to play it solo and think it’s dogshit. The AI is atrocious and with the available online buddies having dwindled away it’s really left it in an awful state.

 

Outside of that though, it’s a drab, brown game that looks like a cheap COD clone with no tension or fear at all. Just another bland 360 era military shooter.

5 was always shit.

 

6 is wtf craziness pretty much all the way through and feels like about half a dozen different ideas for a sequel squished into one.

 

I maintain it’s a misunderstood classic, albeit one I have not played in a decade so no idea how it aged.

Resi 5 is the best game for those interested in co-op, boulder punching and racism. And as much as I loved the first two, that last one is a bit of deal breaker.  And it's a huge shame that the awful, misjudged, tone of the game means Sheva will be forgotten as Capcom brush it under the carpet. I always thought that, handled well, she could be a really good addition to the roster of the game, but I don't think Capcom are able to do that.

 

I'm sure playing it again with my more critical, open, modern eyes, would really tell me more about how misjudged the game was, but it felt awful then, so I've no doubt it's even worse than I remember. I've no intention to touch that game again with a barge pole. Feels icky.

I played it in 2022, and it didn’t feel any more or less racist than any other game I’ve ever played.

 

The only true way to rank Resi is by Mercs, so that means 4 is the best ever made, 5 is the second best ever made, and 7 is the third best because it has the birthday game, which is secretly Mercs too.

Also, Sheva's an absolute badass and needs to be in more things.

 

The original plan was apparently to have Jill replace her after the rescue, and if they'd gone that route I'd have punched every Capcom employee into a volcano myself.

Yes, the rad gore system of RE2 is back! I've seen in some of the B-Roll Leon Shotgunning a Scythe wielding guy's arm off just as he was about to chuck it and it looks awesome as fuck.

I'm out now till release, seen enough to know this is going to be an absolute all timer.

God, it looks so good. Exactly what I wanted from an RE4 remake, including the tone. I laughed out loud when Leon quips 'No food for you!'

Also, I’m playing 6 on the Switch and I have to say I’m enjoying it. Haven’t got too far yet (subway) but it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever played. (Though I do find the interface and knowing when/how to save a bit crap)
