It's like I've watched a different show. I've found it a complete slog with poorly written characters, all the new ones being immensely annoying (Eddie and Argyle) especially) and the Russian subplot being absolutely terrible. All the actors seem to be getting worse as they get older and the new dynamics where they've split them all up just hasn't worked for me. Max is easily the standout, with Dustin being good fun but overall it's been disappointing. It's the length of the episodes that really kills it for me, so little happens in each one. Interesting to see if things can be pulled round for the second half, but I doubt it.

I'm kinda with you on this. The good is anything to do with Steve and Robin, or Steve and anyone, or Robin and anyone, and the main Vecna story. The Russia stuff I found absolutely intolerable. Not only because they clearly don't know what the fuck to do with Hopper and Joyce, but the tonal catastrophe of it as well. Same for the road trippers. I think they have too many characters for the story. Eleven's origins and flashbacks are fine, but probably the biggest trope the show has to offer.

And it is all way too long. This stuff needs tightening up.

I was a bit disappointed with both Steve and Robin, I think they've regressed slightly. They made Steve dumb again for several episodes before remembering that they'd given him an arc where he'd actually become protective and heroic and they've just made Robin into a weird goofball. She seemed a lot more grounded in the last season but now she seems far weirder than she was.

I think you're right that there are far too many characters and most of them simply aren't gelling like they did in the earliest seasons. Oh and Eddie is just rubbish. He's seemingly clueless about the most basic things in D&D lore like gates, despite being a DM and the only thing I like about him is that they're clearly setting him up to die at the end of season.

The hatred towards D&D is completely on the nose so that's good to see, as it had a horrific rep (completely unjustified of course) in the 80s (even Tesco and Smiths used to sell D&D books).

This is 100% correct. Robin wasn't goofy at all in S3, she was acerbic but seems to have had a personality replacement.

I completely agree. That last episode was an endurance test for me, and the last "just so you really know what's happening" scene was laughable.

Did she come out in the last season? It feels like they're trying to tie her new personality traits to her gender preference which is a bit shit if true.

She did, yeah, but she wasn't goofy.

Fair enough. Murray has been inconsistent as well. One minute he's the most paranoid person on the planet who trusts no-one, the next he's fallen asleep because he's drunk a stranger's drugged coffee. It's just a woefully inconsistent start to the season so far. It felt like the first season really tapped into something potentially special and now it's just. Nostalgia, Nostaglia!, NOSTALGIA!!!!!!!!

Y’all forgetting Robin’s fantastic work at the prison in Ep4?

No, it's a cool little speech, but it doesn't work in the context of how she's been behaving. Lots of characters seem to be acting inconsistently this season for no other reason that to keep pushing the plodding story forward.

I thought he was pretending and would jump up at any moment.. and that moment never came.

I re-watched S1-3 before starting S4, it’s been a bit jarring. The first 3 gel and flow so well, this one is a little all over the place - I’m still enjoying it but it’s far too stretched out and inconsistent.

A guard has no name.

I keep thinking he looks Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds.

Ahhh, that’s where he’s from. I keep thinking he looks like Gary Oldman’s spitting WW1 officer in his Friends episodes.

The "that guy" that bugged me for ages in this season was Yuri the comedy russian pilot.

Finally remeberfed when there was a recap at the start of the new season of For All Mankind. The actor was a cosmonaut on the Apollo-Soyuz Mission.

Watched the Vol. I finale and loved it. The whole batch of episodes has been really enjoyable, with plenty of standout moments (the end of Dear Billy the obvious outstanding bit) Having 10 episodes of content mashed into 7 longer episodes worked for me, and made this block feel like event TV; a nightly dose of escapism to look forward to and watch with phone on silent and out of reach.

It’s not the best thing on TV but it is one of the most entertaining. Cannot wait for July 1st and Vol. II.

As for Robin:

Spoiler

Obviously everyone will have different takes but thought her goofiness was partly explained when she first met Nancy and admitted to lacking awareness of social cues. Plus, the craziness of what she encountered was a notch or two up from the Russian base on US soil.

Maybe that’s a reach for some but didn’t find her behaviour jarring, found it more that she was finally being herself around a new group of friends she felt comfortable with.

Episode 7 spoilers

Spoiler

Anyone else feel slightly disappointed that after they get sucked into the upside down and then work out how to do the lights and that there's guns in the upside down that wasn't the basis for the season? I'd have loved a season where they rely on their knowledge from the previous seasons and Steve and Co get tooled up with shotguns and go all Rambo on the upside down rather than it being Elle and her wobbly hand that deals with Vecna.

Am I disappointed that the season wasn't something that it wasn't and instead wasn't something else made up entirely in one's head?
No.

I mean if Rambo Steve doesn't float your boat I don't know what to say. Mind you I always preferred the normal people having to deal with monsters. The fireworks vs the Mindflayer and the spiked baseball bat Vs the Demigorgon are classics.
