The Sopranos must count then? Started in 1999-2007. So it's more a 00s show.

Nope - rule 2 says it must have first aired in 2000 or later!

Some other series that started in 1999 and are disqualified by this rule, even if most of their runs took place later:

* Spaced

* Angel

* Futurama

* Family Guy

* The League of Gentlemen

It will be interesting to see how our votes treat those prominent series that started off extremely popular, but then the consensus was that they fizzled out in disappointment: Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, Lost, Sherlock, How I Met Your Mother. (Even The Wire has people who think that the fifth season was not merely a small drop in quality, but a huge example of jumping the shark!)

Some clues about how my list currently stands:

* Five animated TV series... including the #1 spot! :o

* Four comedies with comedians' names in the title!

* One quiz show! (NLY CNNCT)

* No documentaries yet. Things like Blue Planet, the ____ Britannia music documentaries, and Adam Curtis's stuff are so different from everything else in my list that I'm not sure how to fairly rank them. :unsure:

There are a few things I'd consider putting in my list, but I don't think I've seen enough of them to properly judge. (e.g. I thought the Channel 4 episodes of Black Mirror were great, but I haven't seen any of it since it moved to Netflix; I loved Fargo's first season but haven't watched the subsequent seasons.)

I really need to get round to Mad Men and House of cards some day.

I honestly wouldn’t bother with House of Cards - starts off good but rapidly turns to cat shit.

It's actually good that The Sopranos came out in 99, makes the debate a little more open

Even if it was eligible, it is usually still a close run thing between it and The Wire for greatest TV drama series ever created in most of the face-offs I've looked at.

In the Vulture face-off from a decade ago for instance, two professional critics argued it out and eventually the nod was given to The Wire. It's kind of sad that the Golden Age of TV hasn't managed to produce a show to top HBO's first run of greatness! despite the field being stacked with wannabe contenders to the throne.

1 The Leftovers

As much as I love The Wire, this takes top spot for me as it’s not only superbly made but it also moves me more than any other show. A faultless examination of grief that’s wrapped up in some bat shit crazy storytelling that keeps you hooked right up to that perfect ending. A true original.

2 The Wire

3 Twin Peaks The Return

4 Dark

5 Succession

6 Game Of Thrones

Don’t care what anyone says, loved this from start to finish (yeah I said finish).

7 Inside No 9

Constantly inventive/creepy/hilarious, and responsible for some of the all time best 30 minutes of TV (12 Days Of Christine, A Quite Night In, Bernie Clifton’s Dressing Room).

8 Friday Night Lights

9 Too Old To Die Young

10 Borgen

11 Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex

12 Mare Of Easttown

13 The Trip

14 Detectorists

15 The Killing (The original obvs)

16 Mad Men

17 Watchmen

Achieved the impossible. Made a show that no one wanted, based on an untouchable IP, and absolutely knocked it out of the park.

18 Attack On Titan

19 Treme

20 Breaking Bad

First attempt at a list, bearing in mind that there's a lot I've missed:

  1. Breaking Bad
  2. The Wire
  3. Mad Men
  4. The Office (UK version) + the Christmas special
  5. Deadwood
  6. Better Call Saul
  7. The Thick of It
  8. Game of Thrones
  9. Peep Show
  10. Battlestar Galactica
  11. Fargo
  12. Line of Duty
  13. Boardwalk Empire
  14. The Office (US version)
  15. This Country
  16. Treme
  17. Chernobyl
  18. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
  19. Arrested Development
  20. People Just Do Nothing

I do love The Wire, but its fifth season does let it down slightly, while Breaking Bad just gets better and better, and led to the creation of Better Call Saul, which has a real shot at knocking The Sopranos from its perch if Gilligan and Gould can stick the landing of the current final season.

The Office is the most influential British TV show of the last twenty-odd years and has the best Christmas special of any programme I've ever seen.

Deadwood would be higher if it wasn't cut down in its prime. I still need to watch the film!

The Thick of It is brilliant and terrifying. That final episode is just chilling and tragic and hilarious.

Game of Thrones undoubtedly mucked up its final season, but some episodes just felt like such an event, the thing everyone was talking about. The excitement around the show was better than the show itself.

The Shield will sit pretty comfortably in my top 20.

Watched far more films than series the last few years, so have plenty of gaps in my viewing, but think I can cobble a decent top 20 together. Time to get researching!

@Azrael What system are you going to use to assign points based on rankings?

  • 1st place = 20pts, down to 20th place = 1pt?
  • 1st place = 39pts, down to 20th place = 20pts? (as in the games poll?)
  • Or some other scaling system?

Also, apologies for the populist nature. Also, I should watch more TV, yes.

The lack of Spartacus in other people’s lists is mystifying. If you haven’t seen it, make sure you do!

I haven’t done mine yet, but the lack of love for Six Feet Under, Friday Night Lights and Justified is criminal.

I’m hoping to fit Terriers into my list too.

EDIT: Shit, Ted Lasso too!

This is a nightmare - I dunno how to trim down to 20 let alone get into ranking.

Comedies vs Drama. New shows vs older shows. Mini series vs stuff that went on for 7. Shows that fell apart later on, but were amazing for a time vs shows that were consistently good but not as good as the peak of others.

And am I glad or sad Sopranos and West Wing can’t be on there?
