She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series coming to Disney + 17th August

I enjoyed the

Spoiler

Fourth wall break, but it does kind of feel like they used it as a bit of a get out to just do something shit, then just warp back to reality and then everything is just wrapped up and neatly resolved and none of the issues the show had started tackling are addressed. So what was the point of everything else in the show really?

As for what I really didn't like: Jen made a big thing of going "nope, nobody cares what Hulk's up to its my show", which I was like thank God, yes, have confidence in Jen. But that was completely undermined because he turns up anyway! AND he shows off he has a son in a massive in-universe reveal thing which just takes everything away from Jen in that nice scene. It doesn't matter how low key it is, they know they're dropping it to start of loads of fan speculation and shit and it just instantly sidelines Jen in her own show by doing it despite the fourth wall break. Unless they really want to suggest this is "Kevin's" fault for being a malign influence.

Absolutely top-tier stuff.

Tiny wee bit gutted that Kevin Feige didn't actually show up, even as a momentary sight gag. Apart from that, 10/10.

Sticking it to the toxic bro's is utterly wonderful.

Spoiler

Except they didn't though. Not really. They set up the genuine nastiness last episode and, perhaps wisely, never actually did more than a kind of "look at the silly men" bit, which is then neatly brushed aside afterwards.

I'm also not buying any of the suggestions that this resolved the issue of Jen being sidelined on her own show. You can't leave it to the very last episode to sort it out, and even when Jen tries to do so she's ultimately still not taken control of the narrative - it still has to wrap up all the bullshit and none of it is especially satisfying in the whistle stop tour of "everything is done now, kay thnx bye"

I really really hated the Hulk reveal at the end because of all that, and I love Hulk! But it's not about him, despite all the dude bros wishing it was, so why make him the focus again...

Just loved it. Perfect ending for me. The jokes totally landed for me again, had about 5 out loud laughs this episode, most of any episode for me. I love Jen, her mannerisms and dialogue are so endearing.

Like, it was a nice reveal, but did you really come away thinking the episode made that the focus? For me it was almost wall to wall Jen calling the shots. I came away absolutely thinking about all the awesome Jen / She Hulk moments. All the

big Marvel 'stars' were supporting characters only.

Even the

toxic bros

didn't get their moment in the sun to

physically beat up a "female",

and I wonder if their real life counterparts were kinda disappointed with that, the thought of which pleases me greatly.

Spoiler

It was that moment with the Hulk and that moment specifically, I'm not talking about the episode as a whole.

The whole episode was written as a fourth wall break so that Jen could take back control of her narrative, so clearly the episode was absolutely about Jen being the focus.

Which was why I really didn't like that one Hulk reveal, because when they make a choice to do a huge thing like say "Hulk reveals he has a son", it doesn't feel like that was in the spirit of what they were otherwise trying to do with the episode and it undermined itself with it. Because if the show itself is now self-aware, then it should also be aware of how much doing "big news" for the Marvel universe takes away from the main focus character when it drops it.

The mere fact that fan websites will spend ages writing endless articles about that reveal speaks to how misjudged it was for me dropping it in right at the end during a nice bit with Jen. There is no narrative reason to have The Hulk reveal something like that other than to keep the marketing train going.

Jen actually made fun of the idea of not referencing The Hulk earlier with the Robot so it felt like it literally went against that great moment she had saying that earlier.

I feel like the show has consistently undermined itself like this - whenever there is a great moment for Jen there is another where it's like there's one of those dude bros in the writer's room forcing those little wins back in their box. Which they even sort of take the piss out of in the show but only on the surface level of where it went wrong.

As for brushing the silly bros aside, I think that was a good thing, it was setting up something intolerable then uses that to reject it in the fourth wall break which I get. But I kind of wish they were just brushed aside for the entire season if that was the case - just pointless nothings.

I really think it’s just you putting too much on that particular moment Benny. It was such a throwaway thing that I completely forgot about it in the mix until scanning this thread. The focus and agency was very much with Jen.

Probably. I find these days I do tend to focus more on small things like that, because it's the small things that contribute so much in all the best shows: Better Call Saul, Andor, etc. So I find I get more frustrated when things get close but drop the ball on those smaller things.

What! An! Ending!

The most fun episode of a show that was all about having fun and hanging out with fun people. The fourth wall breaks were on a totally unexpected level, I was grinning like an idiot throughout.

The most enjoyable Marvel show since Hawkeye.

Like I literally have no understanding how anyone can't have loved it. But that's not my issue.

Can I just say even when Jen was discussing

the VFX with K.E.V.I.N. I had a smirk so wide it became a United States landmark.

So can we say Jen just reversed Gwenpool'd? Love it

Spoiler

The toxic men got what they deserved - confined to the stinky bin of no more oxygen.

Dear god, I’ve read and even heard (in real life!) so many of the bullshit lines from the little Incel-con.

Hulk’s son was a throwaway to piss on the expectation of it.  Words barely even from his mouth before they cut to Jen eye-rolling.

Just watched it and, hmm.

Spoiler

I tend to agree think that the Hulk reveal, even if it is just treated as a footnote (and regardless of Jen's eye-roll), is still going to take some of the focus away from writing more about how fresh and different the overall series was.

In terms of how it was for a season finale, I don't think it was great. I don't really get why Todd was even arrested - on what basis? I'm sure he didn't carry around his Intelligesia Head Bad Guy CardTM around with him, so that was unsatisfying and a poor resolution to that thread of Jen's story. I liked the initial 4th wall break in the middle of the episode, though that whole Kevin bit - not so much.

I don't know, it just felt that all the resolution was so arbitrary, rather than being earned.

In the end, the series didn't really show her doing much as a lawyer, nor much as a superhero. And I'm fine with the latter bit - I thought the 'doing superhero bits' in both Ms. Marvel and this were largely rubbish and the worst bits about them, so was happy with the more slice-of-life stuff, but whilst Ms. Marvel gave us some nice cultural stuff to enjoy, the main thing this could fall back on - her lawyering - was never really all that important.

It has a lot of positives - Jen was great, it had some genuinely funny moments and they made some good use of the 4th wall breaking. I don't think the supporting cast was anywhere near as interesting as Ms. Marvel though.

That sounds more down on it than it is meant to, because this is the only show I'd actually look forward to a second series of, I just feel it probably needs a bit of a tighter narrative to carry it forward.

I haven't seen enough love for

Spoiler

THAT INTRO

As a huge fan of the original 70s series, I genuinely got so giddy. I would have loved a WandaVision-like episode in that style. It was so well done, despite being throwaway.

The final episode...

Spoiler

Loved it, although I do think it strayed a little too far when she was sat in the room talking to The Oracle of the Matrix for a good chunk towards the end. I liked the sentiment but I thought it was a tad long.

However, I loved the one-liners and X-Men nods. The link between classic hulk, previous hulk, current hulk and potential future hulk was well put together too.

The season overall...

Spoiler

Underrated.

I haven't enjoyed Marvel stuff this much, barring Spider-Man, since WandaVision. The Sopranos references, the self deprecating humour, Tim Roth, Charlie Cox - just genius.

They managed to roll in a lot of what I enjoy both in and outside of Marvel whilst allowing their lesser known properties to have their 15 minutes of fame.

Great stuff all round, the fact it is sitting on a 5/10 on IMDb is a travesty and is, ironically, the reason why the show exists; to spite the haters.

Agree with everything said here and for me, the best thing Marvel have produced including the movies. I’m a big fan of the supporting cast too.

I saw what they were doing with the intro straight away and I was grinning hard. Had to pause and explain to my daughter, went on YouTube and showed her the 70’s intro show.

That was absolutely superb.

Nice to see a Marvel TV show that actually sticks the landing for once. All the others seem to have started strong but then fizzled out by the end a bit, whereas She-Hulk's final two episodes were probably the strongest of the lot.

I see Moon Knight is now trending on Twitter so this has obviously done its job in terms of winding up the incels.

I thought it was brilliant and I loved that they went so far with it.

Spoiler

I started to worry when Abomination showed up, plus that dude hulking out. Thought we were in for another big fight ending, so the subversion of that really worked for me.

I enjoyed it overall. The cast were great, especially Jen, the humour was good and the fourth wall breaks were excellent, but I’ll go back to what I said a few weeks back and ask - what exactly was it about? Nothing really happened, as fun as it was. I would have preferred a bit more of an overarching story to carry the whole thing, because as it stands it’s just a bit of throwaway fun, which lets it down quite a lot for me.
