I sometimes wonder if they’ll get to a point where they struggle to attract new people. Keeping up with the MCU, even with the increased D+ output, is a matter of seeing a few movies and watching a few weeks worth of 30-45 minute episodes for me. But I guess there will come a point where they’ll need new people coming in and the weight of watching 30 movies and 15 shows might be a bit much.

And yet they get new comic readers despite the weight of reading 80+ years and over 40,000 issues of them.

This is absolutely shite.

ms marvel is the only decent output of phase 4 really , the rest is average at best and mostly

poor really.

For the purposes of balance: I think Ms Marvel has been the worst of phase 4, by some distance actually.

I agree, but express that opinion and people tend to jump down your throat. Not easy to speak up.

yeah definitely have to be brave on the internet to speak up about a tv show starring non white people and culture.

by all objective standards, ms marvel is better than something like falcon and winter soldier which even the show runners admitted was gutted by covid and was a terrible mish mash of action and drama that never gelled or had time to develop.

ms marvel isn't perfect but calling it the worst by far sends the same alarm bells ringing for me as people who say you don't get 'normal' shows and films any more.

They’ve been on a constant treadmill for years of reboots and relaunches trying to avoid exactly that issue and it’s still the biggest one new readers have and something the industry is constantly fighting against. Working in a comic shop you see it constantly and it’s a huge barrier to entry and reason that despite the huge success of the MCU comics still sent seeing the type of mainstream readership that was constantly predicted since the first xmen movie hit big.

They’re making more money in revenue, that article doesn’t mention anything about numbers of readers. Prices keep going up.

Exactly, I know some people who still buy comics and when they mention the prices they have to pay for them, I just think LOL nope.

Niche industry which is practically a rounding error for both Disney and Warner Bros on their financial reports, to the extent they aren't even worth specifically mentioning.

The average price of a Marvel comic single issue is roughly £3.19 on Comixology (Not sure what they charge physical these days). That gets you generally 24 pages of comic. It's a complete rip off but given how low the sales numbers are these days I'm not entirely sure what they can do. Manga seems much better value for money.

For anybody interested in the current state of the comics industry in the USA, I found some interesting articles talking about it.

As of 2021 and driven by the Pandemic, the entire comic/graphic novel market was worth an estimated $2.075 Billion, but that is primarily driven by the popularity of Children's comics and Japanese Manga which has eaten the native industry's lunch, as both of those make up ~3/4 of the revenue.

The top US individual comic sold ~480K copies, and Marvel's biggest seller was an issue of Venom, which sold ~300K copies.

Oh dear, they're gonna shit themselves when they realise the next Iron Man like character in the MCU is a woman.

I'm hoping the Arno Stark Iron Man appears  as a morally-ambiguous adversary at some point (I was expecting him to show up in Spiderman: Far from Home before Mysterio was announced). Shame we've missed the 2020 timeframe, though.

Wait. This needs to be connected to the She-Hulk thread... Er.. The Iron Man of 2020 fought Death's Head, who later met She-Hulk in the comics. Therefore this post is relevant to the discussion...

Nothing to do with any of that shit, but I thought it was far too tweeny, and that's why I didn't particularly like Ms Marvel. Nothing at all to do with the colour of anything.

There's a huge difference between "this isn't for me" and "by far the worst phase 4 MCU"

All the people I know who still buy comics also buy a fucking tonne of them, so I bet there’s a small pool of very dedicated consumers who are willing to pay higher prices and buy more comics who are skewing the revenue figures.

Yeah manga isn’t bad, you’re paying £8 rrp for about 200 pages usually.

Which is very poor compared to the early 90’s peak when lots of event issues were selling a million and X-Men one set a record that still hasn’t been broken of 8 million copies.

How is there? If squirtle didn’t like it because it’s tween style wasn’t for him, then it could quite easily be the worst of phase 4 in his eyes. Why are you so insistent to try and make out his opinion is based on racism?

As for She-Hulk, I think it’s been great so far. The girl playing her has real charisma. Something which I think has been lacking from the majority of the new characters they’ve introduced.

I posted my thoughts about Ms Marvel in its thread at the time- but bailed out of thread halfway through the show as I was on holidays and couldn't keep up contemporaneously. But it was clear my criticism of the show was clearly offending some so it was probably for the best.

I often think it's a misunderstanding when people say "this is shit" when the creator's have gone or a style or genre that doesn't personally appeal to them - where people read that as a criticism take that to mean "it's shit on technical level, in terms of production, acting and editing etc" rather than "this doesn't have the things that appeal to me".

Both the tween family adventure of Ms Marvel and the action-buddy of F&WS appeal to me as concepts so I'm up for both but I would say Ms Marvel was better at achieving what it set out to do than F&WS (which obviously had issues with covid).

So if I was being critical, I would say that Ms Marvel is the better show but if we're just talking about personal preferences in what people enjoy about what they watch then I can see why they could get more personal enjoyment from F&WS over Ms Marvel.

I like the reframing of Titania as an

Spoiler

influencer and she crashed the court because she was trying to escape a speeding ticket.

It's kind of a nice funny way to start that relationship of hers with She-Hulk (Which in the current comics run has evolved to a much more healthy place for both)
