The Top 100 TV Series which began since 2000 as voted by TV experts.

The BBC asked 206 TV experts (critics, journalists, academics and industry figures) from 43 countries to list their 10 favourite TV series which had started since the year 2000 (which explains why some famous shows didn't make the cut). The voters were fairly evenly split across genders (100 women, 104 men and 2 non-binary) so they made it fairly representative.

There were 460 different TV series voted for, but they only listed the collective top 100. And the winner ran away with it.

You are always going to pick at things in lists like this you don't enjoy - Breaking Bad wouldn't make my top 200, its the one I can never understand placing so highly, I far prefer Better Call Saul.

Can't fathom how The Americans is so high, I thought it was utterly generic ITV fodder when I watched the first season.

The one I think could end up on the list from the current crop of shows is Severance on Apple TV, at the moment it's in Westworld territory after 1 amazing season so remains to be seen whether it continues at it's current level of quality or turns to shit, like Westworld.

"Lost" shouldn't even be on the list, never mind at number 19. Such a waste of time as a programme.

In YOUR opinion. In MY opinion it should be in the Top 10.

If that is the only series you watched of it then I can understand why you think that, it gets a hell of a lot better. I've just started a rewatch and the pilot is ridiculous, they throw so much into it, multiple storylines and characters as if they really wanted to get commisioned and then the series as a whole suffers for it. But man it gets a lot more focused and tighter as it goes on and is actually a really good series all the way to the end. The actress that plays Ruth in Ozark is in it too, was the first time I saw her and her story is great. The whole lot is on disney at present.

Lost was fucking amazing. It's absolutely not perfect but it's easily one of the most consistently surprising and interesting shows I've ever seen. Watching Severence I'm reminded of what Lost could have been if they hadn't had to do 25 episode seasons every year. But then there's a part of me that thinks if they had had a bit of time to think about it it wouldn't have ended up the mad sprawling fantastic thing it was. It's great, and the ending only let people down because of how ambitious the show had been up to that point.

Maybe with Lost I'm fixating the fact that they had no idea who to end it, rather than the ride itself. It certainly was a masterclass of getting you to tune back in for the next episode, but it piled up so much so high without any sort of resolution that even during the last episode I knew that it was going to be an unsatisfactory closer.

Band of Brothers at 36 is a travesty

Detectorists at 64 is an outrage

Him and Her not being on the list at all is a war crime

I instantly thought of Him and Her too when I read that, but it was (I suppose) a comedy that turned into a drama by series 3. Loved the show though, and Mum

It's a docudrama, so I would judge it on those merits.

I don't think that's right, or at least I've never seen it described as a docudrama before. All the sources I can find list it as a historical drama, which is how I always viewed it.

I've not seen a large number of these so my opinion is somewhat moot, but I'll still suggest that Hey Duggee and Bluey should probably get slots. (Also Detectorists and Inside Number 9 should be higher.)

I cry every-time that dog lies down :(. The final season had its problems, but if we were judging shows on their final season The Wire would be much, much further down the list.

The secret to having a well-regarded TV series: use the title format "The Good [something]".

I’m trying to think which of my faves are missing. There’s probably a few lowbrow generic shows that I inexplicably adored, like The Punisher season 1, but I can’t think of any others.
