Is that it for big games this year and is this lull temporary?

After the Starfield delay this week there was speculation of what big, third-party game MS will throw money at to get on gamepass to fill what is starting to look like a pretty empty year.

and well….there’s not much really is there? I know we’re a few weeks away from Summer Game Fest but even Keighley has down-played expectations on big announcements as he says publishers are focusing on service games. So is 2022 a bit of a one off or are we starting to see the effects of those warnings a few years back that triple AAA game dev is becoming unsustainable (if you’re not first party anyway)? Or is this just the usual lull in new generation software that’s been extended out because of covid and shortages?

It will be interesting to see once the summer announcements come and go if you could have filled an old school E3 type event even if one was happening.

Anyway cheer me up basically: we’ve still got God of War 2, Bayonetta 3, Silksong and all the smaller stuff we don’t know about yet. Right?

Elden Ring has kept me occupied since launch and I expect it'll occupy me for a while longer.

I'm looking forward to Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Advance Wars: Re-Boot Camp and Bayonetta 3. And River City Girls 2, Live A Live and Klonoa, but those three aren't exactly big releases.

Really looking forward to Klonoa and Live-A-Live though.

Hadn’t realised there was a new Klonoa and it comes with the first two games as remasters. Klonoa 2 is an absolute gem.

Well, it’s only the first two games as remasters, not a ‘new’ Klonoa as such.

But yep, Klonoa 2 is a marvel, and I’m so glad it’s getting remade. Very difficult to play otherwise.

I don't think GoW Ragnarok will launch this year. It's be great if it did, but, I just don't see it happening.

The fewer games that launch this year, the more of my backlog I can clear

This is how I feel, to be honest. God knows there are enough great games to play.

Yes. But we all know we won't actually clear it!

Oh that’s a shame, although it’s been so long since I played Klonoa 2 it’ll feel like a new game with any luck. Hopefully it’s still as good as I dimly remember it too.

I am excited for MW2022. 2019 was the first in nearly 10 years that was great!

Hoping God of War launches, and hoping for some Resident Evil news at E3. Been a long time considering they have several teams working on several projects.

Otherwise I am pretty happy to just take it easy, watch some TV and grind some old Final Fantasy games and such. Maybe even grind the platinum on DQXIS.

I tend to be pretty picky anyway - I was barely able to fill last year's GotY list with five nominees - so I'm used to thinking that there's nothing on the horizon. It'll be a good excuse to pick up older games that I missed on release. (I was going to grab FFVII Remake: Intermission but I've been wrapped up in retro playthroughs instead...)

I guess it would be nice if Replaced got a confirmation for 2022, but I'm not holding my breath.

Considering the size of my backlog, I'm happy to continue with Elden Ring until Sniper Elite 5 comes out. Should also have my Steam Deck by then. I'll look forward to all these new games that will eventually come out but I very rarely play games within their first few months. They'll still be as good/broken when I get to them

Sniper Elite 5 and Saints Row reboot should keep me going for awhile. Plus dipping into a few smaller GP games. I've been holding off on getting Cyberpunk and Yakuza Like a Dragon until I get a Series S or X. So I guess they will be my two big end of year games.

At the rate I’m going with Elden Ring it’ll last me well into the autumn (currently 149hrs on my first play through).

Looking forward to Pocky & Rocky though, potential ports of more classic shmups and Mario Strikers.
F1 ‘22 has my interest too, what with VR support!

Speaking purely of Microsoft and what’s available on Gamepass, I’d like a chance to shift focus back onto some of the more interesting indies currently available before they disappear - notably Tunic and Sable.

And that’s saying nothing of Switch and PlayStation 4/5 games I’ve accumulated. Without wanting to simply parrot what’s already been said, it occurs to me that I’ve got games that came bundled with my PS4 Slim about 5 years ago that I still haven’t played, including the Uncharted collection. That’s just wrong!

Microsoft have essentially lost £120 quids worth of AAA content from this years Gamepass offering, so it will be interesting to see how they plug that gap.

I wonder if we might see an early move to day 1 COD on Gamepass this Autumn?

I also think some kind of tie up with Ubisoft in a similar way to EA Plus  is highly likely.

Year might have been a bit frontloaded (first quarter was pretty nuts) but when it comes to AAA I'm still expecting God of War Ragnarok, The Last of Us Part I, Forza, Forspoken, Hogwarts Legacy and Modern Warfare II. That and a bunch of Nintendo games. Also, The Callisto Protocol seems far in development and according to their Twitter we're gonna get news soon.

We'll know more next month when we're getting multiple showcases.
