To make things a bit more interesting I have tried to not select multiple games from the same series - if I had, then Halo CE, MGS 3 and 5, and Last of Us 1 would all have been in there. I’ve cheated a little bit with Bloodborne.

I’ve also really tried to make a list of games where the older ones still hold up today - FF7 is one in particular that a few years ago I thought was something that would be just nostalgic affection but I replayed it on Switch a while back and that thing really sings.

My stray thoughts:

Halo 3 beats out CE because the Covenant is the single best level in any video game ever.

The first half of Dark Souls is utterly transcendent videogame design. From have made three masterpieces and one very good game since then and still haven’t gotten near it, it’s that good.

Bethesda’s wit and skill at creating weird quests kind of fell off a cliff after Fallout 3. There’s nothing in Skyrim or Fallout 4 like The Republic of Dave or Tranquility Lane. It’s such an endlessly creative adventure.

Hotline Miami on the Vita is the most fun I’ve ever had playing a handheld game.

It’s a real shame Nintendo don’t play outside their core aesthetic more often. It fundamentally means I admire their output more than love it most of the time, but two of the times they’ve stepped outside it are in my top 10.

Metal Gear Solid is still the ultimate game from the future.

The Last of Us 2 was ill-served coming out at the start of a global pandemic and will be more widely reappraised as an all-time classic in a few years’ time.

Mass Effect 2 is the second most confident game ever made. Oozes with swagger.

Resident Evil 4 is the most confident game ever made. The island is the weakest section and that’s the bit with the Krauser knife fights, Mike the helicopter man, the fucking Regenerators, blasting monster Saddler with a rocket launcher and an epic speedboat escape. That’s the weakest part of the game.

@Lyrical Donut - that looks a lot like a trolling entry. I wasn't joking, trolling entries will be ignored and the votes forfeited.

Funny as I'm sure it might be, all any more trolling is doing is going to be wasting my time for me and making this not as much fun to actually do in the long run. If it's more time consuming or annoying collating the data then I'll probably just end up listing the results rather than spending time on write-ups.

Apologies - I will fix it soon!

Some really hard decisions as a few of the games have incredibly similar sequels, and I only wanted to choose one in a series when in reality I love Fallout NV just as much as 3, and I love all 3 Mass Effect games, all 3 Fables etc. Happy with my list overall

I did the same thing, yeah. I think it's a bit "your first one is your favourite" and think that applies to things like Zelda and the Souls games, for sure.

Also, fuck, Geo Wars 2. Can I edit mine?

Wikipedia title: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2

It nearly made it onto my list, too!

That one [Watch Dogs] rarely appears on these lists.

Yep. I can see why it's dismissed by many, it's very Ubi-by-numbers in a lot of ways. I actually came to it very late (maybe only about 2-3 years ago) but it's by far the most dynamic open world crim-'em-up out there in my opinion. Given the tools at your disposal, running from the cops is actually fun, something I could never say about GTA.

The sequel is very good too but I didn't like the snarky protagonist gang and the shift to overly stealth-based infiltrations. (Yet to play Legion due to me being about 5 years behind the gaming zeitgeist at any given time.)

Edits are okay up to the deadline, though people must post to say they have, and then put a note in the entry to say they edited it if they do, as I've started collating entries and it will save doing it for all of them.

Just to reiterate:

If you have already posted an entry and want to edit it, please post to say you have updated it and where, and link to the post.

I am collating new entries now as I go, so you must do this if you have already posted and wish to make any change before the deadline.

3 invalid ones have already been skipped, and must be updated for the votes to be included (one with blank entries, and two trolling entries)

New voters continue as normal

EDIT: I have swapped pokemon yellow for the original blue / red games as they are pretty much the same and that appears to be the variant that everyone has gone with :)

@Benny I did make a minor amendment, I swapped number 9 pokemon yellow for pokemon Red and blue so it ties in with other people's votes i.e. the original rather than a variation of the game :)

I still can't decide whether to go for a new scoring method that prioritises number votes over positioning or stick with the positioning focussed 2017 one. Can more directly compare in that instance.

The formulae is already set up for where I paste my data so I can change it at will now...

If you need an alternative weighting system, may I suggest the following:

for game in gamelist: # run through each game in the user's list progressively
  if benny_list.name.isin(game.name).any(): # is this a game Benny likes?
    game.weighting = 1  # if yes, full weighting
  else:
    game.weighting = 0.1  # if no, 10th weighting

  game.score = (21-game.position) * game.weighting  # score accordingly

(adapt to the language of your choice)

;)

Your weighting is a bit off but this is obviously what I'm using.

There's still a lot of entries that haven't been updated to use the Wikipedia titles. Needless to say, these votes will end up being wasted. "Street Fighter 2" for example. Not picked up by my formulae, so the game would end up ranked lower as a result.

Has anyone got a link to the last one of these we did? Curious to see how many of mine have changed in 5 years

Qazimod posted the 2017 threads, but if you're interested in going back further than that, here are links to the voting and results threads from the 2015, 2013 (x2!), and 2007 polls:

@Benny out of curiosity (and apologies if it's been mentioned already), would your spreadsheet/database/whatever be flexible enough for you to show the ranking against either scoring method (from the poll options), and then after the results are posted you could do a plain list of "here's how the results would have looked with the other method" post?

I remember when researching into how we should hold Rllmuk elections, that academic electoral theory suggests there is no one right way to organise elections, and the one to pick depends on your goals (such as strong governments with reliable majorities or broad coalitions or protecting the rights of particular minorities etc). For me, I was doing my best to make it more difficult for a somewhat popular unhinged idiot to take the reigns for a laugh, and that anyone who won should at least be thought by a significant number of people to be the best available option. History can judge whether this always worked out or not.

So what I'm saying is you should pick the method that produces the results you want.
