re: new tracks, I'm guessing they didn't want to pay Tee Lopes to do his thing, instead, getting the in-house salaried guy to do it - who perhaps thought he should as ''he's mr. sonic music'' as far as sonic team/SEGA/he is concerned.

I'm really tempted to go for the Switch version... and possibly pay the extra three quid for the "Ultimate" edition of whatever they're calling it - am I right in saying it's just extra music you can listen to in the BGM menu? If that's the case I'll not bother!

Pocky & Rocky is out tomorrow too, I should probably save my cash for that instead!

They seem like a talented bunch and should really just focus on their own stuff, rather than being shackled to this cursed thirty year old franchise. I thought this after Mania and it only seems more true now.

Does Joe Jackson run his son's estate? Because that cunt will bleed any license payments for everything they're worth, which I'd guess is why Sega went to the trouble of redoing the music? Unless it was too much of a mess to untangle the rights AND cost a fortune.

He is dead now, Michael fired him when he was alive though. All his stuff is run by a "estate" family trust now.

Dirty laundry well and truly aired, has the game even released yet?

No chance of another Sonic Mania now.

yeah. They’ve torpedo’d further work.

it must be heartbreaking to work on a passion project, for a company who has no passion for their golden goose.

Except when they tried a kickstarter for this no one really supported them. Sadly unless you’re already rich, or have backing it’s going to be impossible for them to do what they’re clearly good at.

This Twitter thread is interesting though. Firstly I thought they made Sonic origins, not just sonic 3 and some other team actually put it all together.

But we all know Sega has been tight with their ports, little in the way of money and time and yet expecting them to rake in millions. We saw it with the Shenmue port and many others and it’s such a shame as the teams really want to put in their all but are not given the money or time to make things perfect. It’s really is such a shame cos they’re always so close but little details spoil the packages. I don’t think he needed to make a thread, I haven’t seen anyone mention lots of bugs and whilst he clearly loves his work and wants it to be the best possible I think in this situation either not saying anything or being more positive around the potential issues would have been a better response.

It's a shame really because the bugs are very minor in the scheme of things (especially when compared to the epilepsy inducing state Sonic Colours Ultimate launched in last year) and could be easily patched out, though you can bet the internet at large have put the blame at headcannon's door so they feel like they've got to speak out, potentially angering daddy Sega in the process. Just a lose/lose situation for them but I certainly don't blame them for trying to defend their work.

Just to clarify, it's Stealth's Kickstarter that was withdrawn and they had to go back to contract work to make ends meet. Evening Star, the studio Whitehead is at, are working on their first game as a dedicated studio and as far as I know it's still under development.

the politics around Sonic must be insane - SEGA of Japan and Sonic Team still feeling that they should have a hold over it, plus a chief brand officer and his team based out of SEGA of America - neither of which side seem to have the chops to really manage and lead the franchise.  there must be loads of infighting at SEGA and decision making frameworks are surely a right mess.  yeah stealth, headcannon and co are perhaps better off doing a sports interactive and starting a new rival brand at this point, a la football manager vs. championship manager back in the day.

sonic team is the ship of theseus trigger's broom at this point, meaningless as a concept or a sign of quality.

also Whitehead worked on the engine for Freedom Planet 2, if that's your jam

Does anyone have a list of the issues?  The only main ones I can see are:

  1. Sonic 3 MJ music was swapped out, new version isn't amazing
  2. Sonic 3 and Knuckles can't be played separately unlike all the other earlier collections
  3. No physical release
  4. Confusing DLC options
