Sonic Origins Plus confirmed for June 23rd 2023

I bought the Xbox version of Sonic 3 last year, and another forumite bought it a few months ago. That version has the original music.

If that’s still available to buy, I can’t help but wonder what the issue here is.

The faff with the pre-ordering, the stupid DLC situation, the high price, the deluxe version missing from the eShop, the Denuvo shit on Steam, and now this fudged prototype music situation, has really dampened my enthusiasm. As the forum's third or fourth biggest Sonic nerd who loves the previous remakes, bought multiple versions of Sonic Mania, has been waiting for this compilation for years and set aside time and funds specifically for it, I am disheartened to admit to myself that I'm going to give this release a miss until it hits a sale later in the year. A thousand tiny cuts to my enthusiasm. What a fuck-up, Sega. :(

That was me!

Still buying this of course, its one of those weird things that mean everytime Sonic gasses get a re release one has to buy them! I didnt real sis the xbox version had the original music, asssume that’s because they came out way back when on 360 so pre the rights issue?

Sonic 3 defi has an odd place in my heart - i dont really remember the levels etc but it was one of the only games my folks ever bought me outside of birthdays and Christmas, I got it as had to have a load of teeth out as I had too many of them so it was amazing getting hold of it!

I have discovered there is a decompile of the Sonic 1 and 2 mobile ports available for PC!

https://github.com/Rubberduckycooly/Sonic-1-2-2013-Decompilation/releases

Only had a quick look but it works well, widescreen Sonic 1 and 2, which I already bought, now playable on PC without emulation!

Plus there's the official release of Sonic CD that I already have.

And Sonic 3 AIR takes care of the rest.

That'll hold me for a while.

Other examples I can think of where licensing rights affects the game’s ability to be sold - OutRun 2006, for example - have meant that the games have to be de-listed from sale. GTA IV had its licences music patched out. I’m not sure why there are problems with Sonic 3 now, since it’s still on sale in another guise.

Maybe it just comes down to the wording of the contract - it doesn’t help that no one from Sega has ever admitted what’s behind it all.

I do find licensing rights to be a weird thing. You'd expect that they'd be able to sell the damn thing as long as they like and that the rights would apply to that game across all iterations.

See also: Dragon's Dogma's original main menu theme tune (Into Free by B'z). That was removed alongside the Berserk equipment for Dark Arisen a piddling year or two afterwards. It's not like it's stuff that HAS to be experienced at the time of release or becomes completely meaningless.

And patching out music in a game you paid for. Double You Tee Eff.

I can't help but think that the lack of a physical release here is a deliberate ruse to try and get fans to double dip. I'm waiting. It's definitely going to happen.

(I'm not a complete luddite, incidentally. We've got several Switches in the house with several owners that will be interested in this; so a digital version trapped within Nintendo's nightmarish excuse for family sharing isn't really viable)

Looking forward to dudes logging on to GameFAQs in 2022 asking about the Carnival Night barrel.

Heh, they've actually redrawn the sprites to show Sonic and Tails looking up and down to give you an idea of what to do .

You had to?

Well no, of course not haha. However I'll always buy physical over digital where possible so I put my money where my mouth is as i'd like to continue to be able to have the option to do so for as long as possible. I appreciate physical gamers are now like dinosaurs (or for a more cool example, fighter pilots) and eventually everything will be digital only, but damn it i'm gonna fight for my right for a plastic box and disc for as long as i'm able :D

I can wait for the Turtles game as the physical's been announced, Alex Kidd did day-and-date with the digital version last year so it can be done. Just these companies know that the target audiences for these games are mainly dudes in their 30s and they know they will try to get us to double dip if they can get away with it.

Sonic Origins 'Plus' is a dead cert, will probably have 8 bit games included to pad it out. Maybe even Chaotix or some shit. It'll happen though.

Isn’t it just them looking up and ducking as the player is pressing up and down? Although yeah, they didn’t animate that way when rotating on a barrel. Not sure it helps the player much though.

Well yeah, but compared to the original release where Sonic was static you wouldn't realise pressing up or down had any input. At least now you know pressing up/down is doing something.

They redrew the Super Sonic sprite for barrels, too

Yeah, that’s fair.

They should have let you pass it by jumping on it, which I imagine is what we all thought you had to do.

Lovely sprite work! Also, it seems the look-up and duck animations have two frames each, like they normally would, so they've actually drawn every angle of the intermediate frame too. And done it all again for Supersonic. That's some effort!

EDIT: Actually not 100% sure it's all two frames, Supes only has a one-frame crouch at any rate. Looking forward to seeing the full sprite sheets (and modders putting them into the the existing fan projects).

Even though I already knew it was bad, I am still disappointed when I see it. The dissonance between the music and action is too much :(

Ooof, that's nasty. 🤮

On the plus side, a side effect of the altered music is that the open secret of MJ's involvement with the soundtrack is now just, well, open:

Chaos agent Yuji Naka at work!

Combined with SEGA's tweet though, does make one wonder if the project team is planning some MJ-related update to Origins

EDIT!!!: looks like Naka's tweet was merely referring to SEGA's use of MJ music in their post, not necessarily Sonic 3 itself.  That's the follow up official line he's since tweeted, perhaps following pressure from SEGA.  But there's still a bit of nudge-wink going on I reckon.

Does Joe Jackson run his son's estate? Because that cunt will bleed any license payments for everything they're worth, which I'd guess is why Sega went to the trouble of redoing the music? Unless it was too much of a mess to untangle the rights AND cost a fortune.
