Post Elden Ring Support Club - aka what to play next

So I imagine many of us are in the same position, or will be over the next few weeks. Elden Ring is complete, the Lands Between fully explored, and most bosses (except probably Malenia ) felled. I have spent the last few days bouncing from game to game to try and find something to capture my attention in the same way, but nothing has quite worked.

I thought it might be helpful for people to share suggestions of what they are playing next, and if it has worked in capturing their attention again. If it has, maybe it will give others ideas!

So far, the closest I have been to finding a new distraction is a replay of Super Mario Odyssey.

Why it works after Elden ring: It’s rather nice to play something so relentlessly fun! No frustration, just idea after idea and in an extremely slick Nintendo wrapper.

Why it isn’t Elden ring: I find after an hour of so I’ve had enough for now, it’s almost too sweet and I need a break. Now how do I replace the other three hours of the Elden ring session?

The only thing that has managed to pull me away from Elden Ring is Tunic (currently on Gamepass). The combat is not a patch on ER. But the sender of exploration and discovery is great - really unique with the mechanic of picking up pages from the game's manual and scratches the itch of something new being around each corner in an Elden Ring-ish way.

I was quite "lucky" because the game's release coincided with another mammoth timesink in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. So I've been going through the rest of the campaign for that, and then there's exotic quest things that I need to work on, seasonal triumphs, etc.

I was thinking of replaying some older games and maybe doing more streams, but I haven't settled on anything yet...

I've been playing Strangers of Paradise and thoroughly enjoying the linear 'Nioh-lite' level design and stripped back combat system, which is deceptively complex (and some might argue, more satisfying) once you get into the expert job trees. But thats just me!  🤪

Its definitely the antithesis to Elden Ring's massive scope and scale!

This is definitely a thing. I felt a bit fatigued after finishing Elden Ring (140 hours) but bounced straight into NG+ as that seemed the only viable option?

Now that NG+ is finished I really am at a loose end.

I'm back to my mainstays (Slay the Spire, FTL, and Monster Train) until something else grabs me. I do have Death Stranding on the backlog but am I really ready for another time sink straight away?

Guardians of the Galaxy was just the tonic for me after Miyazaki had relentlessly pummelled my brain with brutal brilliance for three solid weeks. Its character interplay is always engaging, often very funny and as a game it’s a breezy romp that cracks along at a brisk pace without ever being too challenging. I was really after some lighter, more easygoing and linear fare after Elden Ring and it was just the ticket.

I wouldn't call it a time-sink in the sense you're thinking of. Its not a short-term experience. And its definitely unlike anything else you have ever 'played' (and i mean that in a good way). It'll take at least 70 hours to complete, but most of that is a leisurely stroll compared to Elden Ring, which is why i think its a great idea!

That being said, if you're not a Kojima fan, and don't acknowledge his madman/crackpot/genius vision...then i dunno what you'll think of it.

I started a new character  leaning towards strength and faith because I can't contemplate playing anything else right now. And I'll probably start another one after that and focus on sorceries. I guess the worst bit of replaying is all the open world stuff, it's vast and there is so much but the game is balanced for the player to explore much of it like the catacombs which hold ashes and whatnot. So then the other thing is to do NG+ but I like having a character permanently at end game so I can help people or friends anywhere. So yeah sorry, what to play after Elden Ring? More Elden Ring.

I've been planning on moving onto Ratchet and Clank afterwards. Seemed like the ideal brainless yet pretty 7/10 to remind me what videogames are normally like.

Reckon it won't be until May though. I'm baffled that How Long to Beat has Elden Ring at about 45 hours. I'm over 60 now and reckon I'm about halfway..?!

Yeah, I'm coming round to that way of thinking. A chilled 70 hours is maybe what I need right now?

I'd say I'm at about 80% and could actually go to the final area if I wanted but there's still loads of optional stuff to be mopped up. If I don't do NG+ then I'll probably go do the new Returnal stuff (already finished both endings and might try for Plat). I'm also about 60 hours into AC Valhalla but I don't think I can go back to that just yet

I went back to Dark Souls 2 (partly inspired by @Doctor Shark to whom I will apologise in advance because I saw that you enjoyed it; but also because I have nice memories of it, and I'm forever thinking about putting it back on for another go)

And GOD it's hard going this time! I think I wrote a massive post about it years ago, but what a misfire after the first game. I'd always subscribed to the 'bad souls game, but good game' idea, but in retrospect.. it's close. So dull and grey and brown! I'm in a position where all my options for places to go are very dark and very brown. It's missing that atmosphere of the first game (not to mention the others) that elevated the locations to something mysterious and magical.

Last time I played it I also tried to unpick what was up with the combat - and while there's lots of stuff going on under the hood, it's mainly a problem of weight and animations, and even sound - it feels spongey and that's death for a souls game. In the first game if you take even a glancing blow you know about it - here you can feel like you've avoided an attack but see your health bar drain.

And the music - yikes! It leans into big budget horns and drums and chanting and discordant strings, but oof, it's just miss after miss. The majula theme is great - that's about it!

I want to plow through to get to the DLC areas again because I think I will still love them (it's also the only one that I enjoy playing as a magic user because of the hexes) so maybe I'll change my mind as things progress. Dreading windmill-land though. And the shaded ruins. And all the underground bits.

..maybe I should play 3 again.

I tried to get into Horizon Forbidden West but I just couldn't. It just felt too "old school open world" to me, which is why I'm surprised that I ended up liking the new GTA5 Re:Re:Release. Even though it starts to feel like an old game the visuals seem surprisingly functional and the city is still impressively designed.
