Can you switch from casual to hard mode mid game?

I don't believe so. Probably because it would require giving or taking items from your inventory. As well as possibly changing the state of partially explored conversation trees.

Guess I'm sticking to casual. I should have gone hard but I was worried it would be super tricky.

Up to part 3 now. Utterly in love with this. I don't think I've found any puzzles all that tricky or obscure so far. The most stuck I got was the usual not realising their was something I could interact with more than I already had in the environment.

The quickly movement really really helps keep the flow of the game up when you've spoken to everyone in a section of the game and are dashing around trying ideas out.

Rolled credits on this earlier, found it really compelling and enjoyable throughout but perhaps a little mild on the humour. I’m not sure what to think about it on the whole, on one hand I think it was miraculously well-paced—having a continual stream of well judged puzzles to solve felt great, even though a small part of me found the lack of friction a teensy but disappointing in its own way. I guess they can’t really win in that regard! I definitely prefer a gentler puzzle approach compared to something like Thimbleweed Park though, which was pitched a touch too hard for my liking.

I won’t go into detail about the story, but I did find it less engaging than the first three games. I found myself really quite warming to the visuals during play, but still wouldn’t go so far as to describe myself as a fan of the art style. The music was great though, they absolutely nailed the vibe for this game.

So yeah, I think gameplay-wise this is an all time great in the genre, but I’m really not sure how I feel about it as a whole just yet.

I was completely stuck on chapter 2 for a while. Eventually I had to use the hint book and kicked myself afterwards

Spoiler

Heating up the Baked Alaska thing 🤦‍♂️

I feel like a failure, but I’m not a teenager anymore, playing games like this every day 😂

Anyhoo, Chapter 3 now

Spoiler

I’ve got all the skulls, just need the theme tune.

I hope there’s a long way to go as I never want this game to end!

And does Writer's Cut do anything?

A cursory google (wary of spoilers) tells me it's some additional dialogue and possibly-entire-but-wholly-inconsequential characters here and there that were cut to make the finished game a tighter experience. Definitely dialogue, not sure on what I read about actual characters being cut.

Either way, it's one for a second playthrough sometime. :)

Started part 4.

Lots of fun still but I'm finding it a little easy overall. Save for hitting some big toughie in the last part it's just a little too frictionless so far.

I don't enjoy the ages of being stumped or busy work but somehow this just makes a little bit too much sense to me.

Not read this thread since release as I don't want to be spoiled ... but just dropping in to say that this game is currently making me amazingly happy.

(Spoilers for very start, I've only played a couple of hours)

Spoiler

So glad it starts out the way it did - obviously haven't worked out the significance of the starting point yet. But then jumping straight back to Melee Island is a masterstroke. So much fun revisiting the old haunts and seeing how things have changed in the last 30 years.

Are you playing on Hard?

I finished this last night and it was pretty much everything I had hoped for. It’s faithful to the originals but that doesn’t mean it’s reluctant to move with the times where necessary.

I felt the puzzles (on Hard) were pitched just about right. I got stumped maybe four or five times, but never to the extent that it was frustrating. It was usually a case of having a break and coming back with fresh eyes.

Just such a lovely time being back in this world and revisiting places and characters that have been genuinely important to me for decades. Absolutely delighted with it, and I will look forward to a replay with the Writer’s Cut enabled.

If you do play on hard, are the puzzles still logical, or do you just end up using everything in your inventory on everything else?

There's logic, and the game actually tells if you one thing will interact with another. But for me there was still an element of trying shit out.

Hard mode is still very handholdy tbh. It's most noticeable at the start, but characters will often give a prompt upon picking up an item or solving a puzzle on what to do next before giving you back control. It wasn't too bad for the majority of the game, but I definitely found myself a bit annoyed when the game spelled out something I'd already thought of trying, denying me a modicum of satisfaction.

I'm sure there will be sticking points where you'll want to resort to just trying everything with everything, but as Thor mentioned the UI will tell you if there's an interaction available for an item meaning you don't have to wait for Guybrush to deliver a little quip every single time you try something that won't work, which speeds up the process immeasurably.

I think it's one of, if not the most frictionless game I've played in the genre in terms of the puzzles, but it was still satisfying enough I would say.
