Fromsoft make great games but have a really obnoxious fanbase, change my mind.

It's weird to me how people treat those games like it's an interesting personality trait. Yeah I have at least three copies of every EldenSoulsBorne game from different regions and for different platforms.

Mate, you play a videogame. A lot. Nobody is impressed.

Yeah, let's not 'actually all fans are equally bad' this. From fans have a particularly bad rep because of all the git gud nonsense, and I say this as a massive fan of the games myself.

I think it's got a lot to do with these people seeing their games as the last bulwark against 'dumbing down', improving universal access, etc. Beyond that there's plenty of armchair psychology to do but it's not worth it.

I don't really think the communities of these games are as gatekeepy as people seem to think. Certainly the rllmuk Elden Ring threads (and Sekiro / Dark Souls / Bloodborne threads before them) are actually full of super helpful people doing their level best to help people get through the games.

Even the reddit communities are mainly helpful.

I'm evangelical for a reason, they're fucking amazing games that push my brain buttons unlike anything else. I just want to help people experience what I experience.

And that's why they're amazing community games when you play along with an actual community. More open forums - Reddit, gamefaqs, steam forums etc - always come across very differently: for everyone asking for help there will usually be multiple people saying 'did that on my first or second attempt' and the resultant arguments from that.

And talking about souls on twitter is a recipe for a mental health crisis.

Edit: this is a bit mean on the dedicated subreddit. A souls games that hits popular or similar however: that's going to be bad.

Another edit: actually gatekeeping isn't quite what's going on here either. It's protectiveness, the problem twin of enthusiasm; and just a bit of basic bragging/bravado.

It's weird that the only game series in which you can summon random people to help you, with a comprehensive wiki on how to complete the game as easily as possible, has this reputation of having the most unhelpful gatekeeping fans. Never has reputation and the truth been so obviously contradictory, with the reputation taken as fact.

I mean, to get into the weeds here, this is all partly because these are popular games that need those support mechanisms. Me and a work colleague wrote an article years ago suggesting that there were three ways to support players in learning how to play and getting through a game: tutorials, discoverability (I think we had a better word for this; it was about protected practice areas, scaffolding learning, and real life analogs) and reference materials. You can concentrate more on one or a combination, but in general it's helpful to get balance across all three of these. From's games are amazing in terms of reference material (mostly community made) but very light on the other two.

But yes, gatekeeping isn't the word really, unless you see gatekeeping games in general as a form of snobbery. Which.. there is, a bit of the latter. These are real games, you're a real gamer if you can get through dark souls.

Again, I say all this as someone who loves these games and is teetering on ER being my favourite game ever made.

Something else completely beside the point: playing Elden Ring has reminded me of something I used to LOVE, which was reading walkthroughs of 8/16 bit era games that I would never actually play in magazines.  Stuff like the Police Quest series; I would devour those. Reading about ER the last few days has given me that feeling!

Surely the ‘BOTW lot’ is everyone, because everyone loves it?

I mean sure, in any group of a thousand people who have played it you might find one or two who didn’t like it, but they are naturally foul degenerates, who wisely keep themselves hidden out of their own justified self-shame.

I must be going on the wrong bits of the internet I guess, as I don't see this toxic side of the Souls fanbase.  Most Souls fans I come across seem desperate to talk about the experiences they've had in the game with each other, and when they find a non-Souls fan, want to do everything they can to 'turn' them, offering help and guidance to ease people over the humps the games have for players expecting the norm, offering to come an help with a boss as a summons, etc.

I see far more negativity from people who don't like the games, mocking fans with the 'git gud' idea.

Yup. To be fair that's my experience too when I came to Dark Souls almost a decade after it had launched.

I love the BotW lot wading into every open world discussion with massive negativity because the game isn't BotW. They're brilliant.

Has anyone actually done that in the other thread, which I assume is what you're referring too?

Also a bit rich from someone who's venn diagram for 'threads posted in' and 'post saying how much I hate Nintendo' overlaps so hard the hubble telescope wouldn't be able to spot the difference.

Like religion, then.

Points at Elden Ring, Horizon threads etc. I'm sorry I don't like your favourite massive corporation as much as you do.

I might be Dutch, but I feel 'foul degenerate' is pushing it a bit.

My head hears this read like a souls voice actor. (in elden ring this would also be welsh? the real revelation about that game is that everyone in it is welsh and i'm here for it)
