Vampire Survivors - BAFTA GOTY Winner! Tides of the Foscari DLC Out Now!

The last three goes I have completed 30mins on Stage 1 with three characters, it doesnt seem too difficult now, probably as I have (all but the last line of) most powerups.  Once you max out a weapon and get the evo version of it, it becomes quite a chilled game cutting swathes through the endless baddies.  Probably the last 5 mins or so it becomes more difficult again.  Onto stage 2  :)

I wish this was on the iPhone, I can imagine it would work pretty well if you just moved your survivor by touching the middle of the screen and dragging your finger.

Obviously your phone would melt after around level 50, but it would be an honourable death.

there’s a game called Survivor.io that’s pretty much a clone of it, it’s by the Archero guys if that means anything. It’s pretty shameless but every bit as compulsive and I’ve played more of it than VS (primarily convenience but also runs are shorter). In my defence, VS is itself a clone of an Android game. Worth a squirt imo

Just hit me that the game that VS reminds me the most of is Jeff Minter's (amazing) Gridrunner remake that came out a few years back - in that Jeff wanted to make the player dish out bullet hell and to feel empowered. He did actually call it a reverse bullet hell game at the time. Vampire Survivors gives you the same kind of rush when you're completely overpowered and  vaporising screenfuls of enemy waves. We don't get that enough in games, that wonderful feeling of casually mowing down anything that appears onscreen. Usually it's at the end of a game or when you're in NG+, it's a real pleasure to get OP so early on and completely wrecking everything.

Wish that Gridrunner game would work on recent iOS verisons. Was an absolute blinder.

The Garlic won’t unlock for me - is it haute at 5+ chickens that you find? I’ve eaten way more than that on levels and then tried just 5 and dying but it still hasn’t unlocked. Is my save screwed or is there something I’m missing?

Come at me you bastards …..

Hit that point on dairy where everything is maxxed so you are only picking up chickens or 25 gold and you’re invincible. First 30m run on that.

The mechanics are so addictive that even that 15m run on the level full of static plants that regrow was good fun.

Why does it do that? I get to that point and I’ve still got loads of stuff unmaxed, this is Gallo Tower:

All the weps except the evos are maxed out, but loads of my buffs aren’t. I got rinsed by the 30 minute boss…presumably it can be beaten if your stats are high enough?

Also how do you take evos past level 1? Stuff I’ve not unlocked yet I guess.

This is pretty easy now, I am working through characters and doing the first three maps without issue each time.  It really is about getting EVO on the weapons, then its not too challenging at all.

One thing I dont know is how you guys last with the reaper, kills me pretty much each time in moments.

There’s the glitchy runs.

Then there’s the conventional way where it involves getting the clock lancet and laurel buffed passed their normal state. But they need specific items which you’ll get if you meet certain criteria, i.e: unlock certain stage to then unlock an item to let you acquire said items to evolve the lancet/ laurel

I’ve not gone to those links, can you unlock those things through ‘normal’ play or would you have to follow a guide to get them?

You probably would unlock it. Although I hadn't through normal play. It requires that you take one of the "non-secret" characters through a particular stage which you'll unlock as you continue playing.

Right - so a case of do everything with everything! I may just read the guide instead then! :sherlock:

It didn't particularly spoil it for me reading a guide. I wasn't even aware you could beat the reaper, then following a guide it was still pretty difficult to actually do.

I seem to have fallen down a hole where I simply have to have the Garlic and the Bible, once you have those maxed it seems to be fairly easy. Every time I have failed to get one of those I die (this is over level 1, 2 and 3). Makes it a bit frustrating if it takes a while to pick them up however.

Are there any decent builds that don't use either of those? I mean I don't mind getting them every time.

In the post a few above above I’ve got the Bible evo’d to Unholy Vespers but no Garlic, and completed Gallo which is stage 4. Probably helped that Poppea Pecorina’s base weapon Song of Mana is almost like Garlic when you beef it up a bit. It’s a monster shredder.

Sack the garlic off for Santa water, pick the orb boost to evolve it. You won't go back to garlic again.

I've heard so much about how good this game is, so I downloaded it on the Xbox and I've played a couple of runs.

I'm not sure it's for me. The twenty minutes I was playing might be the most bored I've been with a game in years. I'll give it another two or three runs to see if it somehow grabs me, but if the gameplay is just 'walk around avoiding enemies and collecting gems/coins while your character shoots' for the whole game, I doubt I'll persevere.
