And full 1200/1200 gamerscore.

Put far more time into the game in early access on steam and managed to 100% in about 20 hours on Xbox.

Now time to move on from this addiction.

Is there any skill to this beyond the obvious walking between stuff?

Nope. And skill doesn't help you after about 25 minutes as there's nowhere to dodge. Which is why a lot of the clones deviate from this (as an example, HoloCure has a button to keep your character facing one direction and a button for a super ability).

Knowledge is always your biggest asset in this game, though - knowing what you're picking up and how it synergizes with everything else you've chosen is the thing that's going to help you get past the former time point.

Yup once you learn what's best every level is trivial.

It's also the case that, as you beat every stage, or at least survive for x minutes on each character, you'll unlock even more power-ups that'll make you into an unstoppable killing machine.

It's the same mechanic that makes Inscryption fun when you first play it (different genre, I know) - even when you'll lose, the game gives you the tools to not lose for subsequent runs, without being explicit about it.

I'd like if they would allow you to use L1/LB or L2/LT to select stuff. Then it could truly be a one-handed game. As it is, you can hold the controller one-handed to steer around, but you have to keep reaching over to press one of the face buttons whenever you level up or collect an item.

Don’t think it’s for me then, cheers for answering!

A couple of times now I've had arrows pointing to items (at least twice it was a couple of rings) but when I get to their location there's nothing there. How do I get them?

Look hard for them. They can get lost in the chaos.

In the pause menu you can turn more accurate arrows on and off.  Maybe that's something that you unlock or it's there all along. Not sure.

It's a bit morish this, innit?

I've only had four goes so far, but I've been loving it. And the kids have enjoyed watching me play it (is it local multiplayer at all?).

Going to sound like a stupid question, but do the levels go anywhere? I've only unlocked the second one so far, but if I only went in one direction, would I find new stuff? I'm basically going round in circles at the mo.

Is it just a question of grinding to unlock extra weapons? Or do I need to do certain things to get them?

It absolutely throws achievements at you, doesn't it? I think I unlocked about 13-14 in the space of an hour or so...

Just keep playing.  Certain things happen at certain times and the game is a race between your level and the clock.   After a while you’ll start seeing that some items combine with others and some of them are ridiculously powerful.

I didn't know items could combine. By "items" you mean the weapons and stuff you get each time you go up a level, right? Going back a few pages in this thread, everyone is speaking a completely different language. No idea what EVO is, for example, but I'm looking forward to finding out.

So do events happen at certain times? Do they change per character? The first character (with the whip) seems to get a horde of skeletons at some point that I can never get past....

Concentrate on powering up a couple of weapons, rather than having six weak ones.

Garlic and Evolved Garlic is alright, but its effectiveness drops off hard around 15-20m in so you need to pair it with another evolved weapon eventually (I like the Evolved Axe for this).

Eventually, Santa Water is just Garlic, but with more damage and you have ten of them firing off so they fill the screen. In other words, a better garlic.

My actual favourite starter is, weirdly, a weapon I hated initially because you can't lock direction in this game - the Knife.

The trick behind it is using it alongside other projectile-based weapons (Wands, Axes, Tracerunner, Santa Water), and then scaling EVERYTHING with Duplicator, Spinach, Bracer, Candelabra and whatever the item is for Cooldown reduction. You end up getting the evolved forms of all those weapons in the process, but the primary effects benefit each item and you end up being a Danmaku boss

I’ve found the runetracer to be really powerful so always try and power that up, as well as either Santa water or the holy bibles.

Knives are a solid go to as well, as is the wand. Not overly keen on the evolved cross or fire.

This was a pretty good six that I ended up with the other night, just need to replicate it on a full stage with all of the 6 evolved

Vampire Survivors: The 5 Best Starting Weapons (& The 5 Worst)

Quote

BEST – Garlic

The Garlic works differently than most of the weapons on this list. It starts off really strong, but as time progresses, it becomes less and less effective. The Garlic encircles the character in a damaging aura; most of the enemies at the start of a run will not be able to pass through this aura without getting killed.

Poe is the lucky character that starts with the Garlic weapon. This makes Poe one of the best characters to use for the "No Move Challenge" since the Garlic protects the character in addition to damaging the enemy.

Once you've evolved a weapon, is that it or can you level it up still further?

Example:

  Reveal hidden contents

I know that King Bible * Spellbinder = Unholy Vespers. In @Indy @ S.E.'s screenshot there, it's a Lvl 1 weapon at the end of the run.

You need to

The Bibles and garlic are the best starter weapon in the game. Garlic is useless after 10-15 mins though so I don't want it.

At the beginning I also pick the card that gives you a mini garlic free and a bunch of other buffs. This negates having garlic in the first place.

Every single run I get the bibles  first. Having them fully evolved and collecting a silver ring to increase base area means nearly everything can't get near you.

I always make sure to collect the rings and the wee red things after I have maxed out my slots so I'm not wasting slots.
