Moon Knight - Disney+ - March 2022

So this episode kind of pivots on the gods having the ability to open a portal where the bad guy is and lead him to a tribunal, but not the wit to stick their heads out said door and see the massive evil conspiracy he’s denying.

There was a lot going on there, eh? Super fast pace initially - I was struggling to keep up with what was going on as they had a grand old time entering a tomb full of enemies trying to bring about the apocalypse. Thought I’d missed something. 
 

That tomb was proper B movie, 1999 The Mummy tier stuff as well. Felt like they were using Indiana Jones leftovers at one point.
 

But other than that, it was way, way more interesting than the last episode.

Ep4 better than ep3. No Moon Knight in this one.

 

Some mild gore, implied body horror that might not be appropriate for younger kids, although I'd say it's probably ok for those around 12.

I think I’ve given up on this to be honest. Other than Marvel’s answer to Frank Spencer I’m just finding it incredibly incredibly dull. It’s a shame as I’ve enjoyed all the TV series they’ve done so far but I just don’t get on with this.

About half way through this episode I was starting to lose interest in the whole thing, but the ending brought me right back aboard. Really looking forward to the next one now.

I was like- "They're not going to...", "They wouldn't, would they?" and "It would be amazing if they did!"

Then the cute hippo spoke and I was relieved they didn't.

So how strong is this chap supposed to be? I noticed a lot of early comparisons to batman before we got much content, but then watched that he's clearly "super" and not just some chump with a nifty tool belt and a degree in Krav Maga.

Depends on the run.

 

Generally he's classic 'peak of human ability' with the additional skillset of being a hardened mercenary and CIA agent, who has access to a variety of tech and some supernatural items (a story might have him don mystical armour to fight ghosts, for example).

 

Occasionally the Khonshu link is played up more and he gets increased strength relating to the phases of the moon, or  Khonshu has gifted more of his godly powers to him to overcome particular challenges, but more often than not he's just a very very fit and very very well trained man. Even with that he's usually getting hurt in his actions as the Fist of Khonshu - he spends a lot of time, particularly in the recent stories, with injuries (usually minor, like a busted nose or wounds) and the lore of the character is he's one of the few Taskmaster dislikes to copy because he fights in a way that has no regards for his own wellbeing.

Having read the Ellis and Lemire (?) runs, it’s quite fun seeing how they’ve mixed and matched and made their own thing of them.

Interesting episode. First chunk was a bit formulaic Mummy stuff. But the later section was much better. When it’s weird and quirky it’s very good. Still in.

Yeah, that whole switch around seems to be the norm these days in tv shows to "shock us"

The more I think about it the more that that 5th episode is kinda brilliant. It's not going to some unprecedented place, the narrative device is an old, old trope, and what it shows isn't some brilliant new road for stories to travel, and it's broad stuff.

 

But this is ostensibly a Disney superhero show. It's taken some pretty heavy stuff, and made it weighty emotionally but appropriately for the kind of show it is still.

 

Isaac's performance(s) is (/are) brilliant. Truly brilliant.

Watching today's episode I was more of the opinion that this series isn't really a superhero show at all- that it's more a psychological drama with a fake superhero veneer.

 

Absolutely nothing in this episode that I would stop kids watching.

I got so sick of this in shows I ended up boosting the brightness on my TV.  Was maddening at times but my current set has a nifty custom picture setting which I flick to for most things.

This episode is dark but not in the way of adjusting the picture.

 

This was a bloody fantastic 50 mins of telly.  Genuinely forgot it was one actor.

 

Deserves awards for his performance IMO.

Episode 5 was amazing but not in a traditional superhero way.

The scene in the caves was heartbreaking and the subsequent family trauma afterwards was the most emotional Marvel has been on screen.
 

Also, after watching Picard it’s refreshing to see that mental health as a plot point can be handled in a novel but sensitive, mature and intelligent manner.

Yeah that was pretty intense really, but it was totally gripping.  Issac is spot on in this, superb bit of casting there.  One thing I was kind of thinking they may have shown that I think has been teased in previous episodes, but we haven’t seen yet….

So, this is mainly because of a glimps and you’ll miss it thing from the end of the last one, though maybe someone can correct me if I saw it wrong or if I mistook what was supposed to be something else.

 

They hinted a bit ago about a third more violent personality, after a bloody fight that neither Marc nor Steven took credit for.  When he is rushing through the mind hospital or whatever you’d refer to it as, the two of them pass a room that has another tomb thing that is similar to what Marc found Steven in, violently shaking as they pass it, but you barely see it.  I was thinking that could be this potential third personality trying to get out as well, and we’d see them make an appearance here because of it.

 

Not sure how that would work now the boats gone, but there’s part of me thinking they may save it as a post ending “surprise” to tease however they follow this character on.

So far I’m enjoying it though.  In terms of ranking the Disney + series so far, I think mine goes 

 

1. Hawkeye

2. Moon Knight

3. Wandavision

4. Falcon and the winter soldier

5. Loki

 

Never thought when they were announced that would be the order I liked them.  Of course there’s one episode left so they need to not mess that up. But so far it’s been very good.
