Moon Knight - Disney+ - March 2022

It's good, loved the first episode but it dropped a little too much exposition in the second. Felt like unnatural signposting.  I wish it kept a few secrets from us; Wanda dipped once we knew everything and I hope this doesn't do the same.

 

It could even be a good thing and they've established it so they get to focus on the story of the arc more - only time will tell.

Well I've really been enjoying this and I've personally found most of the Marvel shows to be quite average. And Isaac is fantastic and his accent somehow works. I actually think Ethan Hawke is really watchable too. 

 

Any recommendations for where to start with the comics? I'd like to get a sense of the comic version of Mr. Knight.

The Ellis/Shalvey run, and then the Lemire run.

 

The Ellis run kickstarts the character and introduces Mr Knight. It's short, 6 issues, and is basically 6 self contained stories that veer off into various aspects of what Moon Knight can get involved in. Shalvey's art is also badass, there's some pretty great depictions of violence. And there's some superb moments in them. 

 

Those were followed by various writers doing the same schtick to varying degrees of quality, then the Lemire run started where they take the style of the previous issues but build it into a running story arc, which was very well done.

 

Those 2 runs are also the ones that seem to have influenced the series the most (albeit tone shifted, having the edges knocked off and humour put in).

I watched the first and second episodes back to back last night for the first time and bloody loved it!

 

Like many I am aware of the character from the comics but have never actually read anything with him in (closest I remember seeing anything of him was Spiderman Web of Shadows, where he is a supporting character).

Watched the first two episodes tonight. 
 

So far it’s very much What If… Dick Van Dyke Didn’t Know He Was Batman - but it’s got potential.

I find it's always edging on the verge of exciting (some would call that a pot boiler).  

 

No one has mentioned how excellent Ethan Hawke is.  So I will.  He's excellent.

Enjoyed episode 2 a lot. Found Layla’s amateur dramatics a bit distracting, but otherwise a solid ep. 
 

Harrow could well clear the very low bar of being the best MCU villain - Thanos and Kilmonger had good points but we’re both maniacally evil so we didn’t forget who to cheer for. Harrow hasn’t crossed that line yet.

Nah, so far he's only killed one woman who might do something bad in the future; one isn't enough.

 

Also, Zemo is the best MCU villain.

I guess the devils in the details. Does Amit know what’s going to happen or is she just judging thoughts, as Steven says, and how evil do you have to be? Probably not very, given that granny in episode one bit the dust.

Enjoying this despite feeling there are too many main characters. My fav thing is Steven’s little mumbled comments, very amusing.

Bored stiff this week. Enjoyed some of the first episode but the last couple have really left me cold. I'd hoped for a bit more of Steven struggling to manage the double life day-to-day but that seems to have taken a back seat now.

Another pretty good episode, I thought. Not as good as the others, but reasonable. The action is all a bit woolier than I would like, and the old gods are clearly a bunch of mugs, but I think this continues to manage to hit the right sort of tone and pace.

Liked that Steven got to show his skills to help out. Also liked the suggestion of the third identity so be interesting to see when he shows up - assume he was the one that asked out the museum woman on a date - and what role he'll have.

I thought ep3 was a bit dull. The show gets less R-rated week on week!

 

I got Star Trek Picard vibes from some of the story elements seeming like they have just been made up for that episode, and would have been much handier to have in early episodes.

 

And I am now more confused than ever as to what Moon Knight's power set is meant to be.

 

One more duff episode and I'm giving this a fail.

Good episode. The silliest so far, but it was always going to get sillier. 

 

You can see the ways you'd make this differently with a movie budget pretty clearly, and as a result it's not as good as it could be. Most clearly

the action isn't shot as well as it could be. You can see the ideas behind all of the beats but it's shot in a way that doesn't capitalise on it, and also feels a bit like they wanted to go harder than they ultimately did.

 

And the Ennead would be CGI'd to fuck rather than the... 'clever'... way they actually did it while tying into the concept of avatars.

 

But it's still fun and feels like it still has its secrets to reveal. Moon Knight is cool and looks capable, Layla isn't just a beard, Isaac is great, Hawke plays a good unlikable villain. It's not a masterpiece, but it's good.

The blank amnesic periods were very intriguing in the first episode but it's now increasingly clear they are a budget saving tactic. Ooh, look at the aftermath of that exciting action sequence. You just missed it.

 

Cairo in this episode has a chance at being one of least accurate onscreen Cairos ever.

 

Even primary school kids would be able to do a better interpretation of the inside of a Giza pyramid than this episode did.

By far the weakest of the three.
 

Lacked all of the humour and charm of 1 and 2. The gods are thick as fuck for plot contrivance reasons, the fights were weak. The new collector character was crap. The whole star map cobblers could have been solved by any celestial iPhone app that allows you to scroll through the night sky thousands of years forwards and backwards in time.
 

The main cast are still good, but it went from an easy A-tier to a generous C-tier this week.

 

Hopefully it turns a corner again next time, but I now have a little bit of the fear that it’s a downward slope...

I’m not really feeling this; there have been plenty of action sequences. The blank periods are working on me as key to the plot, with plenty of action.

 

 

I didn’t get the complaints about the use of invisible monsters either, since we saw plenty of them from Steven’s perspective.

 

 

You don’t need to see everything as long as what you don’t see doesn’t detract from the experience, and I don’t see that as being an issue here personally.

The invisible monster debate is a week late. But there is no in-universe reason given for them being invisible.

Aside from the gods also being invisible to all but the avatars. So why not the creatures they summon?

I think the problem with the blackout fights is they’re never as good when you do actually see them. But I think that’s because they’re trying to keep this essentially PG. 

 

And yeah, all the plot contrivances were starting to become really silly this week. Particularly the one which could have been solved with an app, as mentioned above. Or the fact that they hardly bothered to investigate the “serious accusation.”

turn up to get the clue to the location of the tomb he was looking for, when he has already found it? Was it just to destroy the clue so Khonshu couldn’t find it too?
 

By that stage it would seem like a bit of an irrelevance, shouldn’t he just crack on with the excavation?

They're literally said they're aiming higher than previous Marvel shows, and this episode is rated 16+.

Ah, ok. Certainly doesn't feel that way, apart from the blood - which is all from the blackouts. The fight in this one felt all blood was missing to the point of it being conspicuous.

I'm watching it with my nearly-13-year-old son and there's nothing in there that we're uncomfortable with. The first episode was creepy but everything else since then has been fine. Episode 3 was basically Indiana Jones.
