Is that elf/gnome comment a joke?!

The comment wasn't but the scene is.. it's a 5 second throwaway gag.. you know exactly what's going on but you don't actually see anything..

Well holy shit, episodes 4, 5 and 6 were superb.

.. And 7, 8 and 9 were just as good.. :D

Episode 7 'Scanbo' was everything I hoped.. Taking one of the craziest bits of the campaign and doing it justice.. Sam at his creative best and lets the comic relief shine in a different way..

Oh thank god. That’s one of the best bits of the streamed show, and only because the dice allowed it to be so and Sam was just going wild on the excitement and the dice playing in his favour, so I wondered how much of that would translate to the cartoon.

I'm not familiar with Critical Role at all but have quite enjoyed this so far. The first few episodes were a little shaky, but the last three have worked really well. Some of the jokes are quite dumb, but it's fun.

Spoiler

Pike is my favourite so far. Paladins for the win. Edit: I see she's actually a Cleric. I guess there's quite a bit of mad holy power going on there to just be a sword and boarder.

Spoiler

Pike is a cleric of the war domain, which tend to be a bit more aggressive. Pike’s powers escalated massively in this episode due to how the original ttrpg episode went - Ashley Johnson was away filming Blind Spot in New York and had to miss a load of episodes. She Skyped in when she could, and this I believe was one of those times. The in-game story was she was helping build a new temple in Vasselheim - the loss of her connection to Sarenrae is new for this cartoon. In order to explain why she was suddenly there, Matt Mercer gave her a lot of power via her goddess, Sarenrae, to appear via astral projection and basically nuke all the undead as the rest of the team had no chance of surviving otherwise. It’s not something  a cleric of her level (or any level, really) would “normally” be able to do but it made the story more epic on the night and was a nice surprise for the others who didn’t know she’d be there.

Aware of the podcast but never listened/watched bar the first episode I think.

Went into this with low expectations, but that became truly great TV. Well written and played, some killer lines, and very likeable characters. It looks lovely too. Amazing stuff.

How much more is to come this season?

I dunno really - the acting always seems over done to me. An actual game of DnD is never like that.

Yeah I guess so. I’d not played d&d prior to watching critical role and didn’t know much about it, but I figured it wouldn’t be the same around a table with friends. Sometimes the over-eager acting gets a little much, sometimes the dicking about gets a little much, sometimes the shopping episodes get a little much but, on balance, it’s a very enjoyable show. But remember that’s exactly what it is: a show. It may have started as friends round a table but now it’s a multi million dollar international industry.

I dunno. I started thinking 'man, they're running away a lot'; then I thought back to my D&D campaigns back in the 80s, and realised it was pretty accurate. So did we.

Stuff like the

Spoiler

animated, empty suits of armour with the straps being weak points

is totally out of the mind of a DM.

Oh man the big showdown in Ep11 is EPIC.. Incredible stuff..

(..and for fans, there's at least one significant change from the original..)

One to go.. but can't watch until later.. :(

What was the significant change? It’s been years since I watched it and apart from things being cut down for TV show (the original battle took like 4 hours or something!), I didn’t catch anything.

Anyway, finished. After the first few ropey episodes, it really found its groove and just went from strength to strength. An amazing show, all told, and something they should be proud of.

Oh, and

Spoiler

CHROMA CONCLAVE

Here’s to season 2!

Spoiler

It was originally Vex that 'died' in the fight with Delilah and had to be raced out of the vault and brought back..

Also in what seems to be a case of overactive imaginations, some fans now seem to think (due to a couple of looks and a blush) that we'll get a Vex/Keyleth relationship instead of Vax.

Overall I think it's only the first half of episode 1 (and maybe the gratuitously brutal intro of ep2) that I'm a bit down on.. The whole of the Briarwood arc was fantastically well done..

Okay I just watched Episode 11. This is really really good now!

Spoiler

That fight in episode 11 was genuinely one of the most exciting I've seen in something in, well, since something like Avatar or Korra. It was fantastic.

Also on episode 10:

Spoiler

loved the literally "heavy metal on acid" bit.

Also just to add to that:

Spoiler

The reason that fight worked so well is the writers clearly understand the importance of character beats, and the right cadence and weight of everything for it to be involving. Very impressive stuff.

I couldn't make it through the 1st episode of Invincible despite it being  , in theory, right up my street.

The trailer for this irritated the bejaysus out of me and I only switched it on because a few people here mentioned it was good, watched the  1st 2 back to back , some of the humour is poorly judged and infantile but there's a lot of heart in it which carries it a long way.looking forward to the rest of the series.

The first two episodes aren’t really like the rest with the humour - there is still humour and a level of crassness but it’s toned way down on comparison to those first two.
