Last Of Us - 2022 Remake (careful with spoilers Plz)

Happy to stick my neck out and disagree with the general opinion here. I think it looks like a big step up in visual fidelity, and I’ll happily pay the price of admission to play one of the greatest games ever once again.

That doesn’t mean I don’t see why some people would think it’s a big ask though, if I’m being totally honest it didn’t really ‘need’ to be remade, but I’m glad they’ve done it.

As for the texture talk, I really think a lot of the detail has been lost in the transition to a more realistic look. For instance look at the clothing in the original, it feels like the detail was almost exaggerated to make them look more ‘clothing like’. They look more natural and real now, imo.

But if so, why isn't it blurry on the Remaster's clothes as well?

Good question.

The comparison I'd seen looked like it might have been comparing a direct screenshot of the old game to a screen cap of a stream but yeah, those Sony video comparisons are damning.

Bizarre. 70 quid please 😂

Joel's shirt vs a real shirt

I think the remaster looks clearly more "realistic" and like an actual photo of a shirt that isn't a blurry mess. The material lines in the remaster's texture in that shot are much closer to the real shirt, and the original hi res textures would presumably have been based on something exactly like that.

It's Uncharted 4 again with the faces to me.

I got to know Nate's face over the first three games. While not completely consistent, he still looked like himself. Four came along and suddenly Nate and Sully were these completely different people.

Now with this LoU remake Ellie looks mostly like herself but Joel looks too old and soft to be the guy we know he is in the first game.

I think they're trying to more seamlessly bridge the gap between 1 and 2 but I don't think they needed to.

Do you think this is made because Naughty Dog want to be arty fucks and have a need for their misery series to read as a complete piece? Or is it to make a ton of money? Either way, great as it’ll be, I’m gonna wait for it to hit Sony Gamepass probably.

I'm a huge fan of the series (I type this next to this giant framed poster of the og box art next to me) but I just expect more from ND. The first showing of UC4 was a mind blowing jump, whereas this doesn't look as good as Part II to me, despite this being a PS5 only game. I'm definetely going to play it but its just very underwhelming what they've shown so far, and the price point doesnt change anything for me. I'd have said the same if it was £30 budget title. Basically Sony wanted to sell this to a huge PC audience knowing a port of the 2014 game wouldn't cut it so it seems like they got a small portion of ND not working on factions to do it  - because this certainly doesnt look like ND firing on all cylinders.

Oddly enough, as a PC gamer myself I'd have been delighted with a port of the 2014 game, just like I would be with one of Bloodborne.

I mentioned this on page one, but as well as inevitably making Sony a shit ton of money (which is the first and foremost reason why it's being made), developing a PS5-exclusive game allows ND to get used to the new hardware before they then go to release a second game on the system, in the exact same way that they remastered the original TLOU for PS4 before they went on to develop Uncharted 4 (and, eventually, TLOU2). For ND, it's a win-win.

Speaking for myself, I'll end up playing this at some point - it's one of my all-time favourite games - but I'm not paying more than £40 for it. Moreover, I re-played the remaster on PS4 just before Part 2 came out, and seeing as (so far) this looks beat-for-beat exactly the same, except with shinier graphics (or not, as the case may be), I can wait. I'd be more interested if they were including additional chapters, or addressing some of the flaws of the original, like the limited number of enemy types. Maybe that will be revealed later. Presumably they're going to carry over the improvements made to Part 2's combat and stealth.

Also that whole justification is bullshit, isn't it? Every previous generation developers were perfectly able to make games on new hardware without needing to port or remake an older title, and those had much bigger architectural changes than the last two. All those early PS4-gen re-releases from the PS3 generation were about filling a hole in the release lineup because next-gen games weren't ready yet, and most of them were outsourced anyway. It was just a marketing line for why they were reselling the same game again, before that was normalised and everything just became reselling the same game in a different generation.

It's just been clung to by people who advocate for remakes as a convenient figleaf, "no you see EA needed to remake Dead Space to get back into making singleplayer current-gen games again, even though they already launched Mass Effect Andromeda and Fallen Order, my personal desire for nostalgia is just a happy coincidence".

I just really don’t see the point in this remake. It’s like they squandered an entire dev team on something that doesn’t need to be done.
the original remaster looked so good that it never warranted being remade from the ground up. It’s not like the new one looks real - it still looks like a game. A pretty game, but still a game.
imagine what they could have done instead? An interesting last of us spin-off, maybe something entirely new.

All this has done has made me want to go and play the ps4 remaster instead.

Sorry, I meant wouldn't cut it at the full price they want to charge

It would've also required far less investment on Sony's part, so that probably cancels out to some degree. Does seem like the main reason why they've remade it is to give their staff something to do while other projects were in pre-production, and also to give their engine / tools teams the opportunity to get to grips with the PS5 (and also modern PC hardware it seems).

I doubt the entirety of ND is on it. It's very rare for smaller projects to take up the entire dev team.

But they said it’s remade from scratch so it’ll still be a substantial team making it, I would have thought? Regardless. I’m sure they’ll make money from it. As a consumer, I’d prefer to see something new, personally.

Yes but its not the same resource or time requirement was making a whole new game. Big studios often split up work, its how they pump out DLC etc while in the background working on their next big project.

I'm sure the final product will look bloody amazing then Digital Foundry and NX Gamer will do their graphical comparisons with the PS4/PS4 Pro versions. It may possibly have a 120fps mode like Uncharted 4.

Heck Rockstar have been able to sell GTA V across three console generations and that has worked out okay as that's also an acclaimed title

I'll stick with the Remastered version I bought though.

Rockstar didn’t quite have the balls to charge £70 for their latest release, mind.

I think the price - when you take into account that a lot of people have likely paid for it twice already and it’s ‘just’ graphics rather than doing all the mo cap, planning a whole new game and mechanics and sound etc - is a bit of a piss take. I hate that I’ll probably end up getting it, too.

Yeah it's prob a piss take but it's not the same as GTA which was a basic remaster of a remaster. This is remaking it for PS5 and adding new mechanics and combat so it should sit in the middle between cheap upgrade and full price game.
