More detailed face on Joel, though I think they fucked up Ellie's. But the clothing just looks blurry and awful, with barely any visible texture detail. Maybe some sort of aggressive AA or depth of field? Even just taking this from an art direction perspective something has fucked up somewhere.

£70 lol.

If I saw a lot of these comparisons blind, I would honestly struggle to tell you which one was 'better'. I don't think most of the new shots look better so much as they just look a bit different. The only one I thought was obvious was the comparison of the clickers.

Love both Last of Us games but I did expect a bit more from Naughty Dog here I have to admit. Can't see myself paying full price for this.

Just to put the above hilarious comparison into perspective: it is now 8 years since The Last of Us Remastered was released on the PS4. Guess what only 6 years did for Resident Evil?

Is it just me or does the PS5 "remake" look a lot worse than the PS4 remaster?

I mean where the fuck have the textures gone?

Remake looks much better to my eyes.

The faces look "technically" better and more realistic on certain aspects of skin detail, but all detail in clothing has been lost. And by changing the character's faces from a specifically defined look I think it's lost some of their distinctiveness. They look like a common or garden actor in an apocalyptic TV show, not a character from The Last of Us. Which to me makes an important artistic difference for the worse.

The clothing though I would argue is absolutely a technical downgrade. It's as though they lost all the files for the high res assets.

I'll probably find when I finally get round to the Shadow of the Colossus remake I'll have the same problem with art direction

They say they built it from the ground up but obviously it looks like they just put part 1 in the engine for part 2, the models look the same as the models in part 2 flashbacks don’t they?

Such a dick move to charge £70 for it

The clothing in the original was too sharp, but probably as part of the stylistic choices of the game and engine. Now it's gone too far the other way into what looks like a poorly-defined, blurry mess. They'll no doubt fix it, the clothing textures in 2 were spot on.

If it's using a look defined already in the engine for the sequel and they just slapped in the assets for that then that would make more sense. But in that case the sequel engine itself has fucked up the clothing textures for the worse and somewhat makes a mockery of calling it a remake.

With an 8 year gap though, there's just no way slapping a £70 price tag on that and calling it a big Summer Games Fest reveal is acceptable.

Just buy the original remaster for a few quid.

Yes but there was also a huge technological leap in that time to enable that transformation - the jump between end-of-life PS3/early life PS4 and PS5 is much smaller in comparison.

It's not only the clothing and the absense of background detail that worries me it's the lighting as well. The original had some really striking skyboxes (the orange hue of the university campus and the view of the capital building from the library rooftop instantly come to mind) but with the more 'realistic' lighting they are going for its looks desaturated and dull.

Where's the background gone?

This scene is better lit in Remastered.

The lack of the hard shadows is not good IMO.

I think arguing over detail lost in low res screen grabs is a little premature.

As I said in the other thread, this isn't some third party studio doing a hackjob remake. It's ND themselves who are tech wizards and you can't compare the two until you have direct feed footage/actual full res direct captures of both end products.

Just catching up on the news on this. Holy fucking lol they really want £70? My PS5 is currently gathering dust and sort from God of War don’t see much else changing that soon. Jim Ryan is starting to make Cyril Sneer look like a philanthropist.

In the photo mode in the remaster, the clothing was so detailed you could zoom in on the buttons on Joel's shirt and read 'naughty button'.

I mean ND were happy to show those direct comparison videos and expect us to be impressed at the upgrade. The original remaster is in the same low res video as the comparison and the texture difference is very obvious. If they are happy with that video with a comparison then that's the comparison we'll make. Especially when it's £70.

Nah, just looking forward to the 180 on here in a few months when Digital Foundry do their thing. Same old cycle.

I would posit that, even if those blurry textures and terribly dark and desaturated changed scenes are not in it, it still won't justify a £70 price tag.

Even the PS4 remaster was released at less than full price from what I remember.

Fair. I have no stake or interest in £70 price tag debates given that I am not stupid enough to even pay that (the most I paid for a PS5 game was at launch for £59 for games that I went on to sell for £40 each months later). Since then I've not paid over £40 for a PS5 game inc Returnal because I'm not insane with my money. I wouldn't pay a penny over £40 for this and probably would just wait until it was on ps plus extra alpha 3 ultimate edition.

I just know one thing ND will not get wrong when this is out is the tech/graphics.

Honestly I think remastered looks better here too, where's the scratches on the wood? The buckle on Joel's backpack?

Look how much more life there is in Joel's eyes in the top one though!

Lots of ifs here, but from what’s been reported so far this will be a fully fledged PS5-only game, and I think if you combine that with the seriously superior Last of Us 2 combat this could be a much bigger improvement than many people seem to be envisaging.

There’s also speculation that this will be sold as a package with a PS5 Last of Us 2 Directors Cut and the new Factions multiplayer - I would be surprised if that was all available for £70 but if it is that is a pretty compelling package.

I think they said it will be next year until this multiplayer game receives more news, so i doubt they'd be packing it in.

But even the geometry of the rear wall in the original remaster is so much better - it has contours and looks "made", whereas the new remake one is a simple flat line. It's like they put all their effort into the faces and their environmental designers just went, ah fuck it, who cares about concrete anyway?

These re-remasters are not for anyone on this forum. Not one of us.

This is an evergreen, huge, mainstream success for Sony. This is the game equivalent of a book reissue. A huge influx on new player will come due to the HBO series (if it's not shite).

This is like Nintendo re-releasing MK8.

We would be made to buy it, Sony would be mad to not re-release it.

Definitely prefer the older, more stylised faces. It's like taking a comic book and remaking it with photographs, just sort of weird.

The blurry clothes might be because of stream compression.
