Last Of Us - 2022 Remake (careful with spoilers Plz)

Finished this over the weekend. Absolutely loved it and was surprised how much I’d manage to forget.

Remaster highlight for me was watching bodies get torn apart by your IED. In a tight space the gibs actually slid down the walls and dropped off the ceiling if you hung around enough 🤢

I’m about half way through it and it’s just utterly superb. The changes to the aiming and the enemy AI are the biggest changes that affect the gameplay positively. It really feels like a tense fight for survival.

Also, as the name implies, this brings the two games much closer together, and I can’t really decide which is best. They’re two parts of the same whole. Absolutely incredible game!

Finished this last week and it really cemented how good the whole game is. It's the fourth time I've completed it since the original release but it's still a joy to play.

When I originally played the game the whole ending was uplifting and positive, we can argue does Ellie believe Joel or not but for me personally he did the right thing. Only now when we now know what transpires in the second game does the whole ending seem bitter sweet. I might have to wait a while until I replay the second game as it was so emotionally draining for me.

One thing I would like is a spin-off with Bill, I felt we only scratched the surface with his character and he's one of he most interesting people in the game for me.

There are a couple of "spin offs" that could have occured.

Joel & Tommy post outbreak

Joel & Tess

Henry & Sam (to a point)

Bill

So much potential to expand the world of TLOU.

Well this is a funny old thing isn't it? I played TLOU on release and thought the story was excellent but the game itself was a lot of finding ladders tacked to some no better than fairly alright combat. I never played the remaster but absolutely devoured TLOU2 during lockdown and thought it was basically a masterpiece. Some of the best combat and on/off stealth mechanics outside of MGSV coupled with some genuinely breathtaking set pieces. When they announced they were remaking the first Last of Us I was up for it! I'd have rather had a new game and £70 was and is a joke but the idea of them transporting that combat into the first game seemed fun!

Having finished it at the weekend I came away thinking it's a bit of a weird beast. They didn't shift the combat over, obviously. They did make the enemy AI better but you're still stupid old Joel and the combat lacks that in and out of stealth magic that makes the sequel so special. I spent most of the experience thinking "God this looks amazing, sounds amazing, the haptics are incredible but... I kinda wish I was playing Part 2." If anything the improved AI makes the experience worse because you don't have the tools to deal with teams of baddies ganging up on you like you have in 2.

Anyone saying it "looks worse than the original" is mad though. It's a seriously breathtaking game in parts and is absolutely the best way to get into the series if you've not played any of them before. It's just without the movement and systems of part 2 it feels like you're playing a really nice looking game from 2009. It's like if they remade GTA3 in Red Dead 2's engine but left all of the gameplay exactly the same.

It looks phenomenal at times. When the lighting, environmental effects and little details all click in at once, it can be breathtaking. I also much prefer it as a game over the sequel so this was a no brainier and I loved every minute of it. On to Left Behind now. I really hope they release multiplayer down the line, I used to love playing that with my pals but arrived late so it was pretty dead.

Did it need to be made? Absolutely not. But I’m glad it was, and for me it was worth every penny.

Just got this from smyths for £42. Super excited to be playing one of the best games of all time again. Everything i’ve Read about this so far suggests it’s not the base ps4 game with 4K visuals slapped on top, so really looking forward to it.

Might be worth keeping your expectations in check.

I’ve always been a big defender of this remake, generally from the perspective of ‘if you think it’s too expensive, don’t buy it’, but having played through it I would say it’s predominantly a visual update. That isn’t to say they didn’t update other stuff, supposedly the AI is smarter now, but I can’t say I noticed it.

Being one of my favourites of all time, it was always a no brainer for me, and if they were to release an 8K version in 5 years time to keep in line with The Last of Us Part 3, then I’ll buy it again, and enjoy it again, just as much as I ever did, but I won’t be under the illusion that it’s anything more than a nicer looking version.

Disagree, the far more aggressive AI and the changes to the aiming and combat feel are by far the most potent changes.

It actually gets a touch game-breaking toward the end of Left Behind as the whole thing is far harder as a result.

I disagree with this. Yes predominantly it is an update, although the game play is improved as well. But the game is absolutely stunning to look at and play now.

I wasn’t going to buy it, I had my eye on the PC version, and then I played the 2 hour demo, and well, I was totally hooked in.

The lighting and mood, reflections, shadows, everything, it’s a phenomenal looking game, I’d say possibly the best I’ve ever seen.

But it’s how it plays as well, the animations, just idling around and the way characters interact, the cutscenes, it’s all very, very impressive stuff. The way you control the characters fees so natural and blended.

Damn you Sony making me buy the game for the third time, and I’ll probably buy it for PC too

Is there a deep dive out there on the AI and gameplay changes? I saw the one by ND back when the game came out, but I didn't really get much of a sense of the impact of whatever improvements they made

I never liked how TLOU 1 played, but TLOU 2 is one of the most smartly designed TPS of its generation. I'm trying to hold out and wait for the PC release currently, expecting that to have graphics and performance features not on PS.

I’m not sure how they could top it graphics wise, but performance yeah, the audio as well, oh my word.

I’m playing it in fidelity mode with frame rate unlocked and VRR, and although there are a few dips here and there it’s worth it for the sharper image imo.

Do you have a VRR TV? I don’t and found it really janky when turning the camera.

The PC version will be great to see because very shortly after release someone will mod in models for the actors from the tv show for their respective characters. And Thomas the tank engine somehow.

Yeah VRR is on, still get a bit of jank occasionally but on the whole it’s pretty smooth

Well, you know that the answer is!!

Sort it out! ;)

(40hz vrr fidelity mode is basically like playing 60hz with the odd stutter)

I’d like one but I have a 2019 Sony AG9 oled that was pretty pricey (and gives a great picture) so can’t justify getting another set for a while.
