Last Of Us - 2022 Remake (careful with spoilers Plz)

This (currently) rumor keeps popping up to a point where it's clearly happening now.

It makes sense. The HBO series looks to be on the right tracks and by the time season 1 is done later this year, LOU will have a much much larger fan base. So if you want to direct all the new fans to the games where do you point them? LOU2 would be odd place to start yet LOU1 is pretty dated both graphically and mechanically now. If you can point them to a LOU1 that is more on part with the tech of LOU2 you have a win win situation. Especially for Sony if this new audience are buying a 30-40 quid game instead of a fiver.

Also I don't see Naughty Dog directly working on this, it will be one of the Sony support teams (Visual Arts Studio most probably). I am certain the main NaughtyDog team are working on a new IP.

Jason Schreier had a story last April where he said that this remake supposedly started out as a Visual Arts Studio game before Naughty Dog took over the project and that some of the higher ups at Visual Arts left after that happened.

I thought the whole point of this was to give Naughty Dogs’ teams something to do whilst their other projects are in pre-production. Can’t imagine it being outsourced.

Yeah, that's one of the main reasons they're doing it. It's definitely made by ND, in conjunction with the MP game (which they might bundle with this).

I also hear of a TLOU2 directors cut which is pretty annoying since i literally just got the standard game.

I don't think there would be any real need for that with the recent PS5 update.

As for a remake of the original TLOU, I agree that it doesn't look dated or play badly at all: I replayed it shortly before Part 2 came out. I've read, however, that it gives Naughty Dog's devs an opportunity to get to grips with the PS5's architecture and capabilities, however, ahead of making their next game. And, as has been mentioned, it ties in with the TV series.

I still don’t quite believe they’d have the nerve to do this. Along with slapping a £70 price tag on it, it’s just terrible optics. Proper tone deaf stuff.

So you can pretty much lock it in then.

If they flog it as a complete remake (not remaster), like Resident Evil 2 or Demon's Souls, then I can absolutely see them charging that much for it, especially if they include the Left Behind content as well.

I'd like to think that I wouldn't immediately buy it at £70, but then it is one of my favourite games of all time...

When this was first announced I didn’t see the point but the more I think about it the more an entire other game filled with Last of Us 2-quality combat encounters sounds amazing.

That is assuming they have redesigned the encounters instead of breaking them with the increased mobility - like how Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes was a piece of piss because it just gave you the tranq gun and first person shooting on top of the original MGS levels.

I would be up for a Last of Us remake that spruced up the visuals and brought in all the new AI and gameplay mechanics from the sequel; it's one of my favourite games ever, I'm completely on board with a new, more lavish version. It'd be interesting to see if they change the tone any because some of the mechanics from the sequel, like NPCs calling for their colleagues by name and being traumatised when you kill them, work off the sequel's treatment of violence and the way it encourages you to consider whether you're doing the right thing.

It'd also be interesting to see if they're tempted to change the levels to accommodate things like dogs and the way Ellie could clamber all over obstacles, or whether they'll stick to Unit Joel stomping around with his big legs.

to stop people moaning.

What was the problem there? It’s a long time since I’ve played it, so can’t really remember anything controversial with it.

*BIG HAIRY BALLS THE LAST OF US 2 SPOILERS*

Spoiler

the doctor Joel kills at the end of the first game turns out to be Abby's father in a flashback in TLOU2, but he looks somewhat different

Ah yeah, it makes sense for them to switch his character model then.

I actually don't think they should change the model, but it's fun to think they'd do a whole remake just to shut up some internet chuds.

Someone should actually make a game that you play from various different character's points of view where everyone's appearance / actions / voice acting is different based on their relationship to the current player character. Then make seven sequels and the last one can be called Unreliable Narr8or

Thinking about this, it's an even stranger game to get remade.

If you have a PS5 and a PSPlus subscription, you have a copy of the PS4 version for free.

What subsection of new PS5 owner, that wants a copy of this game, but would be unwilling to subscribe to PSPlus, does Sony think is out there?

Let's keep in mind the original remaster (I did just type that) sold great and that was barely a year later. I think we consumers broke Sony the wrong way when we kept buying all their remasters instead of demanding backwards compatibility. I mean, they remade MediEvil. Never mind Ghost of Tsushima.

Lots of ifs here, but from what’s been reported so far this will be a fully fledged PS5-only game, and I think if you combine that with the seriously superior Last of Us 2 combat this could be a much bigger improvement than many people seem to be envisaging.

There’s also speculation that this will be sold as a package with a PS5 Last of Us 2 Directors Cut and the new Factions multiplayer - I would be surprised if that was all available for £70 but if it is that is a pretty compelling package.

That all sounds great. Now if they can redesign the console as well to go with it, I’m well on board!
