Oooh, fun!

Spoiler

1: I think it’s Piquet, Williams, Hungary. Question is, 86 or 87? I’m going to got for… 86. Pure guess though - usually look for the Barclay strip on the Williams to tell between the two years!

2: Looks like Damon in the Williams at Donington in 1993?

3: 1992, Ferrari, Capelli (!) and looks like the old Bridge section of Silverstone.

No surprises, Kiro did.. well

@kiroquai As for for the first one...

Spoiler

2 and 3 correct, of course. As for 1...it was 87! So close! Well that is what I thought. I searched for Hungaroring 87 BUT on closer inspection of the front wing endplates indeed it was 86 not 87. You get the grand slam!

More incoming. Who can beat Kiro?

Pleased with that! As pleased as thing young fella:

Am sure more than a few of you recognise him? Currently a prominent F1 figure.

I’ll hang up my guessing helmet from now on though so as to stop ruining the fun by dint of being an utterly tragic F1 nerd :)

Another one if France’s excellent group of 1980s talent gone. Philippe Streiff dies aged 67.

Mainly known for spells with Ligier and Tyrrell before he joined AGS, for whom he had an awful accident in pre-season testing at Rio in 1989 which, when combined with sloppy medical care, led to him being a quadriplegic.

He didn’t let that stop him, and continued to be a presence around motorsport for the rest of his days.

Repose en paix, Philippe.

Worth noting, incidentally, that one of the things Streiff did post-accident was organise the annual winter Paris-Bercy karting Masters. Gives me a wonderful excuse to post the 1993 event here, which was rather special as it was the last dance for Senna v Prost.

Also present that day was Olivier Grouillard, who you’ll be interested to discover is @mexos’s 415th favourite F1 driver of all-time!

It is!

Anyone ( @kiroquai) know of any other motorcycle champs who have driven an F1 car? Obviously there's Surtees, Rossi switched with Hamilton for a promo thing and I think Doohan had a go in a McLaren?

Doohan had a go in the Williams in 1998 - think he might have binned it too!

Here’s an oldie: Giacomo Agostini (one of the greats) taking part in the 1979 Dino Ferrari GP, which was basically an F1 non-championship race to test if Imola was fit to replace Monza as holder of the Italian Grand Prix!

He also did a bunch of Aurora GP races (basically British F1 for old cars).

Incidentally, chances are a few of you folks will wind up with some pocket money to spend after tomorrow. As such, here are five F1 (well, mostly) books I thoroughly recommend tracking down:

The Lost Generation (Tremayne)

AA0F5A36-4218-4DFB-8FEA-75795B6DEA9D.jpeg.ff62ef20c07d194f9e85b196a63cc715.jpeg

Likely to set you back about £30 or so. David Tremayne is almost unrivalled for me when it comes to dragging the reader back to periods of time and making them feel like they’re sat amongst it all. Gut-wrenching story of three British drivers who were all likely more talented than James Hunt but couldn’t outrace their own tragic fates.

Racers Apart (Tremayne)

680AA1B6-8889-409A-94C8-860F8A8F9171.thumb.jpeg.8c9ca7992df7c3a1d04bfd2361323b4c.jpeg

Likely to be between £10 and £20. A rather personal look at some of David Tremayne’s motorsport heroes, including some power boat racers, speed record chasers and IndyCar drivers. Released prior to Imola 94 so Senna was still racing at the time. Some fantastic tales in here.

1982 (Hilton)

BE660E90-9D15-4934-829B-9FD253013707.jpeg.b591c7d041319c9586049e2969cc0539.jpeg

The maddest F1 season ever got a superb book when the late and much-missed Christopher Hilton released this about a decade ago. Interviews with surviving participants and others who were there paint a revealing picture of a season that was almost Shakespearean in terms of drama and tragedy. You’re looking at about £40 for this.

Racing the Silver Arrows (Nixon)

7060B4C3-B5A0-4415-8CE8-D0073F9D1D18.jpeg.2e365b45d085884c9236efdde303423b.jpeg

Likely the best racing book I own. Released almost 40 years ago when some involved in the Nazi-bankrolled Grand Prix tour of the mid-late 1930s were still alive, so there’s some incredibly valuable insight and reflection from those involved in this book. Painstakingly detailed and written so evocatively you’ll feel like you’ve come to really know your Caracciolas, Rosemeyers, Seamans and Langs by the time you’ve finished. Likely to set you back north of £70 but good god is it worth it.

Mon Ami Mate (Nixon)

40ED49A6-1CC1-409A-B9FD-177D8A985335.thumb.jpeg.a3416f50f332aca7b14d9f8e44cfb08e.jpeg

Basically take what I said above and apply it to this book, except it’s the 1950s and focussing on Mike Hawthorn and Peter Collins. A pretty revealing tale of two very different men who became the best of friends and yet, within weeks of their greatest triumphs in 1958, were both gone. Usually around £65 but once again, worth that and more.
