I hope he does get at least a reserve seat and finds his way back on the grid, he seems like a good guy.

The drivers dont seem to get much, if any, development time once they reach F1 these days, you either show superstar potential straight away or you're done once someone else is available.

It seems F1 are looking to implement changes designed to reduce spray during extreme wet races and may introduce rear wheel "mudguards" which they believe will reduce spray as much as 50%. These could be introduced as early as the 2nd half of the 2023 season but more likely 2024. They would only be used in extreme wet conditions rather than all wet races.

Pirelli will also be producing and testing improved full wet and intermediate tyres following complaints that the full wet tyres lacked so much performance that teams were switching to intermediates on too wet track conditions as seen in Japan this year.

Though on The Race the guy responsible for this initiative and Pirelli are saying they need to figure out how much spray is from the diffuser, but drivers have also been saying the ground effect cars throw up more (which makes sense)

There is no point in developing great wet tyres if the race director is basically going to wait until the track is virtually dry before going racing anyway. It certainly felt at times this year that the wet tyre was redundant as the racing was basically only ever allowed in intermediate conditions. As soon as it got wetter, they stopped it.

Re the mudguards, how will they be fitted? Would the be a part of the hub of the wet rear wheels? Or are they fitted prior to the session? What happens if the track dries out? Or if one gets damaged? I'm sure they're considering this (hahahaha yeah fucking right)

I think its a good idea to start looking into mudguards, as silly as they sound for an F1 car.  Wet races used to be the best ones but with the ammount of spray that goes up from the modern cards they cant really send them out until it stops raining and the tracks almost ready for inters.

Yeah if they can be bolted on only for wet conditions I have no problem with this. Beats waiting around forever and I want to see the best drivers in the world tested in wet conditions. If mudguards mean that they can actually see and race under those conditions I am all for it. I just don't want to see them at all unless it's a wet race.

The suggestion is that you won't even see them for wet races, only extreme wet races. The whole thing seems to be a reaction to Spa-gate.

It really looks like Binotto is going to go eh? I hope he doesn't exit the team completely, maybe they can find a way for him to go back to being car focussed and Fred can do the political 'leading' guff.

Someone has to carry the can for the cockups strategy wise this season.  They should have been far closer to Red Bull then they actually were.  The fact it went to the last day to confirm number 2 in constructor table with how bad w13 was is nuts.

I liked Lola. I even went to their factory back in the day as I designed their website. It felt like an old school, certainly no high tech.

What always surprised me was how Lola chassis was dominating in Indycar but stuck at the back of the F1 grid.

As I understand it. Lola were all set to deliver with a pretty solid chassis, but the engine never materialised. Then the government cancelled a couple of very sweet deals for some rather sexy auv boats that would have given lots of British manufacturers a massive lead in the market.

Lola had staked everything on the MOD contracts, and so were royaly fucked when the plug was pulled

At least half a dozen WEC teams got canned as a result and the F1 car was shit canned. The prototype is sitting in a warehouse somewhere today. A testament to what could have been for so many companies.

Amazing! Looks like the chassis of one of their mid-eighties CART cars with a million other things bolted to it.

Remember listening to a podcast about the dreadful 1993 Lola F1 car and discovering it had its roots in a wind tunnel refurb they had done in 1990/1991. Ended up screwing up their F1 stuff and CART stuff for a number of years and almost bought the entire company down.

(It amazingly wasn’t an excuse for their 1997 disaster as the wind tunnel had been fixed and that car didn’t actually run in the wind tunnel anyway).

Sad they’re gone, really. An iconic name.

It does, although with 15 wins, that much we already knew. It highlights quite a few other interesting things too, like what a force Lewis still is. George may have got the win, but five 2nd places for Ham is pretty remarkable with that car. Also just how much Ric cost McLaren 4th in the constructors and Lando really outperforming the car. For all he had a miserable season with reliability, Nando really showing he's still got it too.

Such a shame, sounds like some further short term government policy killing off the long term prospects of British engineering again :(

I think Lando is world class and is going to be wasted at Mclaren.

Which isn't a revelation really. But I like to say it from time to time.

I’m not as sure. Lando is good but  Danny Ric made him look better than he is and Sainz had no trouble keeping up with Lando when he was at McLaren.
