he's a number two that almost came second in the championship and did as he was told (mostly).. so really. he's not shit, he did what he was employed to do.

And in fact would have done, if the #1 hadn't actively prevented it.

I actually really enjoyed this Abu Dhabi GP (for possibly the first ever time). Okay Max drove off quietly down the road but that's fine, no one cares about him. The actual drama was for championship P2 and that went right down to the wire.

For a while in the middle of the race I wondered if RBR had deliberately nobbled Perez's strategy to show him his place. But I think it was probably more a case of Ferrari surprisingly pulling a good strategy out of the bag.

For someone that no-one cares about, he sure does seem to occupy a lot space in a lot of people's heads.

Max's potential for record-breaking is scary. He's 25, has two world championships and 35 race wins.

At the same age:

Hamilton: 1 world championship and 14 wins

Schumacher: 1 world championship and 10 wins

Vettel: 3 world championships (!) and 25 wins

Alonso: 2 world championships and 15 wins

Inoue: 2 safety cars and infinite embarrassment

If Newey knocks around for another decade we could be about to go into a Schumacher and Ferrari level of complete domination unless Merc can make a good car again and Ferrari can stop being themselves.

The 2026 engine regulations might stop that from happening. RB are still essentially running a factory Honda engine but for the new regulations it will be built and designed by Red Bull Power Trains instead of a major manufacturer. If they don’t get it right it won’t matter how good Newey’s design is and RBPT can look forward to being thrown under the bus just like Renault. Even if he doesn’t match the WDC record he’s definitely going to beat Hamilton’s win record due to how long the seasons will be.

Mercedes and Hamilton have been more dominant than Ferrari and Schumacher

What do we think about Mclaren next year then?

A little part of me expects (wants) Norris to smash Piastry as hard as Ric got. Turns out the Mclaren is worse than hass dogshit on steroids, Lando just happens to have developed to the next level, far better than anyone ever gave him credit for - masking how bad the car is. And Ric is actually still the same old Ric. RB put him in the sim and he’s the same sort of gap to Max as he always was. He never went away. Lando’s stock goes through the roof just as Mclaren’s plummets.

Yeah Lando is extra special, isn't he. I have little doubt he will annihilate Pastry. McLaren have been such a disappointment, it's really disheartening.

I'd love RB to put Danny Ric on the grid. Get Checo and his delusions of winning a WDC to fuck and see what Ric can do with a pointy car with brakes again. No point in having him otherwise.

Checo’s contract expires next year which is convenient.   Have Danny R get up to speed on the sim, whilst RB use the threat of him to keep Perez in line in the meantime.

Perez's new deal runs until the end of the 2024 season.

Perez isn't the most exciting driver on the grid but he's been almost the dictionary definition of a solid number two driver for Red Bull. With the exception of Brazil this year theres been very little drama and even there most of the blame would be on Verstappens shoulders.

I'd probably rank him as the eighth best driver on the grid and of those I'd rank higher Norris is the only one who might realistically replace him at Red Bull. I certainly wouldn't be looking at Danny Ric as a potential replacement. In terms of average finishing positions last season his performance relative to his teammates was the worst on the grid. The Latifi-Albon comparison may be a little iffy because most of the time Latifi couldn't finish any worse than he did but its the only team mate comparison even in the same league as Norris-Ricciardo.

Indeed, Redbull do not need Ricky boy sitting on the opposite side of the garage planning on how to beat Max. They want a driver who will do as he's told and help win the constructors title as Max cruises to the finish line in first place.

Two feisty drivers in a championship winning team NEVER works.

Ricky is going to be the nice cuddly face of Redbull F1 plc and turn up to showboat the car around, take some pictures and glad had a few rich folks. Nothing more.

Perez has clearly had enough of that though. RB are not blind, IMO he is on watch.

I'm trying the first episode of this now.

Pete Tong is a bit of a dose as the narrator so it's hard to recommend so far, maybe the episode will pick up.

I'm a couple of episodes in. Like @bear I'm not enjoying Pete Tong very much - his delivery from script is pretty stilted and unnatural. His co-host Sarah Holt is somewhat better - it's not clear from the credits but I think she appears to have written the script.

The actual material is interesting though. Most of us here probably know the story fairly well, but I'm enjoying all the talking heads. Marc Priestley is always good value.

Perez as number two or Bottas as number 2?   If they’d been driving for the others team last season Verstappen ** wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near.

I've no idea what that means, sorry.

I haven't listened to it yet but was worried about Pete Tong narrating it

I think the definition of a solid number two wouldn't be someone who is consistently beat by your main oppositions (1 or 2!) drivers despite having the fastest car most, if not all of the time.  A lot of the time Perez couldn't even get the car into a position where he was affecting LeClerc's strategy, of course Ferrari / LeClerc took themselves out of this championship all by themselves.  I supposed the flip side is that he's not taking point off Max either.

They have a free pass for 1 season though. I mean, when they flip them out mid season, there is no chance of a refreshed and more feisty Danny Ric putting his championship ahead of Max.

He sounds a bit like Richard Ayoade as Maurice Moss from the IT Crowd.

There's a lot of heavily-scripted back-and-forth between Tong and the writer/co-presenter. It's exactly like that scene in Wayne's World:

Quote

Wayne Campbell : So, do you come to Milwaukee often?

Alice Cooper : Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600s to trade with the Native Americans.

Pete Friesen : In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?

Alice Cooper : Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."

Wayne Campbell : I was not aware of that.

Like I said before, it's pleasant enough listening if you can get past the clunkiness of it.
